4 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. % WALL Street, } Saruapay, aprit 9~6 P.M, Phe week closed upon a dull state of affairs in all the markets save the gold market, GOLD 11334. The advance in the foreign exchanges which was sustained throughout the business of to-day led to & strong market at the opening of the Gold Room, and as the day progressed @ prominent broker, who was said to be buying for @ new clique movement, purechasea several millions in Jot ranging from ten thousand to half a million of dollars. Under this sttmutus the price advanced to 113%, but declined to 11336 at the close, when the broker referred to left the market. The transuc- tions after bis departure were not of great moment, however. The dealers in gold nave been fur- mished {resh matter for agiiation in the facts submitted to them during today. The dul- ness at the close was the resnit of a fear to take steps either way, and a.desire to post- pone Operations until more of the movement 1s seen next week, Ine foreign exchange market was fairly active, even after the steamer, on the basis of 109 for prime bankers’ sixty day sterling and 109% for sight, These were the lowest quotations, ower leading bankers refusing to draw at all, except at rates certain to guarantee thew against any sudden ‘The course Of the gold market is shown in the 2:15 P. The money market was easy at five to six per cent, The offermgs at the latier figure on stocks were more than the demand, The government dealers were abundantly supplied at the lower rate, Commercial paper was Without new feature and in Mmited supply at seven to eighty per cent for prime double name acceptances, THE BANK STATEMENT. ‘The weekly statement of the assoctated banks is again upiayorable. Despite the fact that the aomes- tic exchanges continue to favor this city, and shat the money markets of Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orieans, and all the large cities are working easily, there is a loss im legal tenders of about two and a half millions, and @ falling off in deposits of over four aud @ half miilions. Speculative manipulation is therefore very evident. The banks loge @ milijoh in specie, while the surplus over the legal reserve is reduced about $2,400,000, The last two statements are as follows: April 2. The stock market was extremely dull, but prices advanced iu sympathy with gold. There was a ten- dency to 4 reaction after the bank statement, but, gold suddenly taking @ sbarp upward movement, prices closed steady at the improved rates. It 18 «suspected tat the gold movement is the work of the stock cliques, who began to feel the pulse of the market to-day preparatory to a campaign in stocks. If they dis- cover a suMcient short interest they will run Drices up sharply, and by holding gold will force the shorts tocover. Ifthe short interest is tnfing they will use the advance in gold to sell stocks and unload vo the public.
