10 TRAGEDY IN HUDSON CITY. An Old German Barber Uses the Razor on His ‘Wife's Throat—A Chapter of Domestic Mis- ories—Banished, Dispossessed, Starved and Driven to Despair—An In- terview with the Murderer. ‘The following case will show to what extremities @ man may be driven when the most sacred ties of home and family are outraged. Fifveen years ago there lived tn New York in flourishing circumstances & German barber named Charles Schultz, and nis tamuy, He possessed house property in ‘Thirty- first street and on the Bowery, But the relations between him and his wife were Rot of @ pleasant character. ‘Dificuities fre quently arose. she insisted on retaining all the Dank books and in having a portion of the property transferred to ner. She made home a0 uncomfort- able for poor Charley that he left about two years before the outbreak of the rebellion and went to California in order to enjoy some respite from the Yexations ot his married lie. He had the reputa- tion always of being a most peaceful man, and he hoped that time would work some change for his Rappinges, ine property which he owned was leased so that when the ground rent became due he was jegally ‘@isposseasea and the Wile took bis place. She after- Wards bought and sold real estate, aud speculated even in Jersey. After an absence of several years Schultz returned and found that he was without houge or home, to use an old phrase. His wile gave him the cold shoulder, and heid the lash over bim, Jest he might seek to recover his property. A year and a half ago the family removed to Bergen- wood avenue, near Paterson street, Hudson City, Where Mra. Schultz had three houses, properly betonging to her husband, and the latter went to live there, Dut as @ beggar, for he only received the crumbs that fell from the tabie, At last life was be- coming insupportable, ana he left anda went to earn @ subsistence at his trade in Brooklyn. His sight Tatiing him, he was discharged as unfit for labor any longer. ‘The miseries he endured since tn his own house and from his own family would drive many men to self-destruction. At last the acme of despair was reached, and the hour of retribution arrived, Op Tuesday night, between eight and nine o'clock, he was sitting with his wife, when she poured on nim ‘the usual volley of abuse, scorn and contempt. He es up, seized a razor and drew it across er throat almost from ear to ear. Forty: nately, however, the blade did not sever any of the arteries, although a deep gash was inflicted. Mrs. Schultz staggerred out to a neigh. boring house, where she now lies, Her husband ‘was arrested and loaged in the Hudson county jail. Yesterday morning an examination took place before Recorder Aldridge, aud the following testi- mony was given:. Emma Schultz testitied—J reside in Bergenwood avenue; last evening I Was sitting in the front base- ment and my father aud mother were sitting in the back room, between eight and nine o’ciock; suddenly my mother came into the front room and my father Tan after her and put his arms around her neck Trom behind; he drew a razor with his right hand across her throat; I saw the razor; it was bo soouer done than she was covered with blood; Joscph Donaghue was there and dragged my father away, threw him on the floor and took the razor from him my sister Sarah ran out and called out sor a police- man; officer Warner came and took my father into custody; I went to look for my brother and a doctor. Sarah Schuitz corroborated the foregomg and added, “my father and mother have had quarrels occassionally about family affairs; my lather did not ave anything to eat ac the table yesterday, nor did 1 see him there the day betore; we have all lived in the same house for # year and a nalf; my father has been away trom ue house about three-fourths of that time; my father does not collect rent por have control of whe money at all. Dr. Hammond testified that he made an examina- tion of the Wound; found an incision of the throat; there Was a cut downwards and upwards, commenc- ing ab the angle of te lower Xtending CreLs- versely six inches to the opposite ‘angle; the intega- ments Of some muscular libres were cut, but no blood vessels of any extent were divided, as there was but little hemorrhage. The danger will be trom Subsequent Fesitits. MELANCHOLY REFLECTIONS IN THE PRISON CELL. Schultz, who 18 now sixty-five years of age, was committed tor tral. He ts a man of more ‘than average lutelligence, ratuer calm and self-possessed in bis demeanor, and rably unpresses an ob- server, He Was visited by a HERALD reporter, to whom he recited Mis melancholy history during the last decade of years. He wound ap with these re qmarks:—*Now, sir, ] ask you what you would have done during ali those triais if you were in my place ? ‘My daughter admitted that my habitation and my ortion Was tha: of the dog, while my property was ing used for the comfort of ull other members of my famuy. Why, if aman had @ particle of spunk he would take tne remedy in his hanas jong ago. | have been very patient and peaceful. 1 will put the question to the jury in this way: ntlemen, let each of you suppose himself in my place, aud then say what you would do, Many of you might put the Pistol.here (pointing to bis head), and, pul ! fare- ‘weil to the miseries of !ife. 1 can ger bail, but what is the use? Where sbalil go’ I have no house, no home, no friends. I am a stranger to my family and my property. Better 1 had left thls world twenty years ago.”” He has four daughters and two sons living, the youngest being sixteen years old. Mrs. Schultz 18 ‘weak, but she is notin a dangerous condition, 1t 18 expected that she will soon recover, Since her hus- band Was arrested no friend cailed to see him, and his wretched, forlorn condition aroused the sympa- thy of Recorder Aldridge. How he has survived all his misforvunes is indeed @ matter of great wonder. THE SLEEPY HOLLOW MURDER. Isaac V.
