Among the passengers by the Silesia yesterday ‘were a man named Hessler, and @ woman who ts the wife of Michael Mortz, now in Strasbourg, France, ‘The pair crossed over together, each having left a partner in the wedded ‘state behind. According to the statement of the woman the separation between her and her husband was mutually agreed upon, and as her husband 1s very wealthy she toox with her ample means for the journey. The pair were ‘arrested in Hoboken on an affidavit made by @ rela- tive of Michael Mortz that the woman had stolen some of her husband’s money. This relative, Who resides in New York, states that he recetved a des- patch to that effect. It appears that on tbe night of Maren 1 Alfred Pitt, conductor on car 96, Third avenue line, had @ quarrel with one Caytein Bowen, proprietor of the Wallack House, in Westchester county. On the followmg morning, about ten o'clock, he lay about the depot at Harlem fur the conductor, stabbed him in the hand and took refuge tn Black’s Hotel, close by, Wiere he was found by @ crowd of railroad men. Serious Charge Against a Police OMficer—Dis Examination Yesterduy—Alleged Creel and Inhuman Conduc: Oficer George W. Wultney, of the Twenty-second precinct, was brought before Justice Bixby, at the Yorkville Police Court, yesterday, charged by one Francis McDonnell, of 746 Tenth avenue, with beat- ing him ina savage and cruel manner. On Tuesday night last Captain James Bowen, pro- prietor of the Wallack Hotel, in Westchester, was turned off car No, 69 at Harlem, of which Andrew Pitt is conductor, for insulting a lady passenger. ‘Tue following morning, it iQuleged, Bowen awaited the arrival of Pitt's carat the bridge, and betore tne latter nau time to get off mis car Bowen jumped on tne platform and made a lunge with a long-biaded knile at the throat ef the couductor, who suddenly threw up his arm and the blade went through the palm of one of his hands. Bowen was arrested sub- sequently on a warrant iasued by Justice McQuade, and held to bail to auswer. ‘Tne Third Avenue Kail- road Company’s counsel will atiend to the prosecu- tion of the case, The Fox false pretence case came up for further examination yesterday before Justice Ledwitu, at Essex Market Police Court. William Daizell, of the New York and Baltimore Transportation Company, which fas its office at pier No.7 North river, made a Jormal affidavit that Wilham H. Sexton and John B. Fox served upon the company a forged order purporting to be signed by Piumer% Co. tor 200 barrels of flour of the value of $1,350. ‘The flour was delivered and subsequently taken by a carman to Atkins & Co., at No. 412 Washington street. The order was proved to be a forgery, the truckman swore the prisoners bired his track, and a member of the firm of Atkins & Oo. testified to the compiatn- ant making an arrangement with him to have we flour stored in his promises. Justice Ledwith heid both prisoners for examination. Jane Wiilisms, the English woman who on Tues- day morning swallowed a dose of Jandanum with suicidal intent, at her residence, 37 Mulberry street, as heretofore reported, died in Bellevue Hospital tae following evening. Deceased nad long been of in- temperate aud depraved habits, and concluding that life had no further charms for her bought a few cents’ worth of poison at the drug store of Dr. Greene, 97 Park street—after first making known her intentions to catherine Burke, 25 Elizapeih street— and drank it. Dr. Greene was called to attend the sufferer, but did not succeed in removing the lauda- nun from her stomach. Jane ‘was sub- sequently taken to the Sixth ward station house, and 4 police surgeon soon in attendance recommended her immediate removal to the hospital, which was done, death ensuing soon atterwards. Whether prompt and proper measures were resorted to to save the life of deceased alter she had taken the fatal draught may be a subject tor Investigation before Coroner Keenan, who holds an Inquest in the case to-day. Deceased had no perma- nent home or means of support and her remains wii be interred at the expense of the city.
