THE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME FOR THE WERK. In accordance wich the programme announced by Secretary Boutwell at the beginning of the month the government will to-morrow, at tho Sub-Treasury, sell one milion of gold, aud on Thursday purchase one million of five-twenty bonds. The holders of stock of the Chicago, Columbus and Indiana Central Railway will meet in Columbus March 10 to ratify or reject the contracts with we Pittsburg and St. Lows and Pennsylvania rail- ways, * The enterprise known as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroaa, which 1s to form a new trunk line between the Alani coast and the Mississippi valiey, is a con- solidation of the Virginia Central and the Covington god Ohio roads. It is in operation from Richmond to the White Sulphur Springs, a distance of 227 miles. The line ts being rapidly extended to the Ohio, at the mouth of the Sig Sandy tributary, 200 miles distant, and it is expected that seventy-five Miles of this portion will be in operation during the current year, The road will derive an tm- portant traMe from the transportation of the iron ores) = whico are found in vast quan- tities and of superior qualities near the centre of its route, and the famous cannel and splint varieties of coal which are found in the Kenawha valley. Besides the local trafic its advantages of low grades, cheap fuel and equable climate will enable it to compete for the carrying of the surpius breadstutts, provisions and the like bf the Ono val- Jey to their destination on the seaboard.
