Destruction of an Extensive Woollen Mill in Philadelphia~Loas $400,000—Ineurance #224,008. PLULADELYHIA, Feb. 17, 1870. The extensive woollen milis of John P. Bru ner, on Hamilton street, extending over the whole block between Twenty-third aud Twenty-fourth streets, took fire this morning, aud the main building Was entirely consuined. The fire commenced in the third story of the weaving room, but from what cause 1s not known. There were no hands eiaployed in this portion of the premises. Those working oc- cupled the second, third and fourth stories of the Hamilton street front. The first int- mation was a4 strong smeli of smoke, which was firet perceived by one of the namber engaged on the fourth story, who imine- diately rushed down stairs and informed the engi- neer, who stopped the engine, The fames speedily worked their way upwards and the upper floors giving way the immense weight of machinery was precipitated earthward, covering all the tower foors witu lf, together with an immense mass of burniag materta!, which soon served to kindle the fires in all the rouma. Yesterday afternoon deicetive James Kealy, of the St. Nicholas Hotel, effected the arrest of one of the most desperate villalos who operates outside of the States Prison, The arrest was made in Broome street, while the ruMfan was chaperoning @ fiashily Greased femaie. The particulars of the caxe are of a very interesting Character. On the 27th of November last a New York thief and burglar, named Charles Williams, allas Robbins, turned up in the Iitue town of Hollyoke, Mass., put Up at the best hotel and for a few days created quite @ sensation in that quiet community of abolitionisis aud free lovers, On lt of December ho cailed upon a wealthy farmer named £. H. Bail, residing in the suburbs, and professing to, be an extensive New York tobacco merchant, opened negotiatiauions for the purchase of Mr. Ball’s crop of that article. The desperado was taken to Hollyoke Iasi evening, after being confined at police headquarters. As the citizens of Hollyoke are not blessed with New York aldermen, Williacos wili likely get twenty years iu the State Prison. The bonds were not recovered, they having been negotiated, but the purchaser is kaown and thoy wil likely be sacured. It is said that Steven# will hikeiy be convieted as an accomplice. A meeting of the hotel keepers of New York city was held last night ab the St. Nichole’ Hotel for the purpose of taking concerted action to ob- tain ice at lower rates than those an- bounced for the season by the ice companies, Mr. R. French presided and Mr, P. i, Stetson was elected secretary. Alter counsiderabie discussion, in whicn It was stated that the ice companies were making a profit of from thirty to fifty per cent on ross receipts, and that al! companies in tunis city were controtied by one management, it was pro- posed that a company be organized, with a cavitai Of $200,000, for the purpose of supplying shareholders im the company with tce at rates which shouid not by ® promt exceedi one dollar per ton.
