FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. See WALL STREET, Tanspay, Fels We ri} The Magging speculation in the gold market ren- dered the premium easily susceptible to the effects of the loreign news, and the result was a DEULINE IN GOLD. The opening price was 12024, with the bulk of transactions at 12034 a 120%. At this Lime the cable brought the news of a termination of the Paris riots, with a Orm closing to the Lourse and an advance in rentes, Tho price, thereupon, gradually settled to 120%. ‘The chief Muctuations were as follows: — Holders of gola paid five to six per centand ex- ceptionally three percent to have their balances carried. The operations of the Gold Kxchange Bank were as followa:— Gold cleared + $26,620,000 Gold balances, 1,016,621 Ourrency balances. 1,231,535 THE MONBY MARKET, From the ease which was experienced in the Money market yesteruay and to-day it is expected that the bank statement on Saturday will show a further expansion tn the item of loans anda heavy increase in deposits, as a result of further heavy re- erpts of currency from the toterior, No transactions occurred above six per cent, and to prime houses, on good and prime securities, the prevatiing rates were five and four per cent. The leading govern- mont dealers were wore than accommodated at the last mentioned figure. COMMERCIAL PAPER, ‘There is a good demand for prime commercial! ac- ceptances, and to-day rates for four months paper declined to six per cent; still there were “‘glit edge’ names offering at seven, while some six montus acceptances were quoted ateignt percent, The range of qaotations 18 six to eight per cent, which will in- clude everything tn the shape of prime business notes, For single namez it is more difficult to fix the Tange, but seven to tifteen will about embrace it. FORKIGN RXCHANGE. ‘The foreign exchange market was trrogular, being steady at the opening and becoming strong about midday, but closing heavy and lower, the prime bankers’ selling at 108% for round amounts of sixty- day sterling, the decline being all the more remark- able for the simultancous decline in gold. The mar- ket closed with the following quotations:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 108% a 108%; good to prime bankers’, 103% @ 109; short sight, 10934 a 100%; Paris, sixty days, 5.21% 95.17 95.15; Antwerp, 6.21% a 5.174; Switzerland, 5.213¢ 95.17%; Hamburg, 355 a 36!¢; Amsterdam, 40% a 40%; Frankfort, 403% @ 407; Bremen, 783 a 793; Prussian thalers, 70% a 7134. GOVERNMENTS WEAK AND DECLINED. ‘The government market opened with the dulness which nas been its fcature for the past week, and ‘was therefore quite sensitive to the depressing influ- ences of a lower range in gold and heavy offerings -of bonds atthe government purchase to-day. Tho amount offered was $5,700,000, in twenty-eight pro- posals. The accepted lots were from one house, at 112.65, ex interest, An impression prevalls that ‘the next purchase, towara thg Glose Of the iioxth, the government wiJ be in a condition, with reference to its currency balance, to accept more than the million which will then be solicited im the programme. The decline to-day was an average of about one- half per cent for the leading speculative issues, the 7678 at their lowest touching 11314. Central Pacitic bonds were quoted 9654 0 93%{. Tho latest street prices for the governmert list were as follows:—United States currency sixes, 111% a 111%; do. sixes, 1881, * wegldtered, 11734 a 118; do, do., coupon, 117% a 118; do. five-twenties, registered, May and November, 1143§ a 11454; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 114% a 11475; do. do., 1864, do., 114% @ 11434; do. do., 1865, 114% a 114%; do. do., registered, January and July, 113% a 113}; do. do., 1865, coupon, do., 113% @ 113%; do. There ia little speculative movement in the market for Southern securities, and prices to-day were gen- erally steaay. The Tennessees were strong in both the old and new issues and the North Carolinas higher for the old. Louisiana levee elghts wore frm at an improvement Of 906 to two per cent, The Mis- souris have recovered from the effect of the im- probable story telegraphed from St. Louts regarding the redemption of the bonas in currency. The courts have already decided that they must be paid of in coin. South Carolinas were heavy and the general market dull, closing with the following atreet quotations:—Tennessee, ex coupon, 57 8 5734; do., new, 6014 a 60%; Virginia, ex coupon, 62% a 6234; do., new, 66 a 67; Georgia sixes, 81 a 82; do. sevens, 92 8 92)4; North Carolina, ex coupon, 44a 45; do., new, 253, 8 25%; Missourt sixes, 90% a 91; do., Hannibal and St, Joseph 91 @ 92; Louisiana sixes, 72 8 73; do. levee do., 72 724; do. do. eights, 84 a 84)4; Alabama eights, 040 95; do. ves, 62 8 64; South Carolina sixes, 87 9189; do. new, $234 8 83; do, registered stock, 80 a 84, é STOCKS IRKEGULAR AND UNSETTLED. The stock market was weak at the opening, and, ‘in sympathy with a sharp decline in the Vanderbilt ‘securities (Harlem excepted), became heavy and un- settled. Towatd noon there was a rally, and atthe Jast board there was @ general recovery; but the market then became dull, and closed quiet, inactive and disposed to heaviness. The course of prices seemed to indicate that some of the larger holders. were realizing on old favorites and making pur- chases of new ones, Thus Lake Shore was active and rose to 68% upon increased earn- ings, but declined with the general market in the afternoon. The earnings on the prominent Western railways have improved since the first of the month, and hence the recent advance in St, Paul and Lake Shore. - Rock Island advanced to 12034 and Reading was strong at 97%. The Vanderbilt shares bdecame buoyant after the morning call, but went off at the close of street business, Ohio and Mississippi ‘was active, and rose to 13034. Erie was barely steady. With reference to the closing of the books it 1s stated that tue committee of foreign stockhold- ers, Who represent about Ofty millions out of the seventy millions of the capital stock, are desirous of registering the ‘‘stamped shares,” but that opposition is made by the present directors, though for what reason does not appear. ‘The foreign stock 18 intended to be entered in the names of Robert Amadeus Heath and Henry L. Raphael. In the miscellaneous rallways Terre Haute ‘was active and advanced to 30. In the miscellaneous shaves Western Union was weak and Pacific Mail steady. The following were the closing prices of stocks at the last session of the Stock Exchange:— Canton, 69 a 6934; Cumberland, 34% a $4; Western Union, 3674 a 354¢; Quicksilver, 13}, a 14; Mariposa, 9% & 1034; do. preferred, 20% @ 21%; Pacific Mall, 41% @ 413%; Boston Water Power, 16% a 17; Adams Express, 6434; Weils-Fargo Wxpress, 19% @ 20; American Express, 36% @ 37; United States Express, 60% a 61; Merchants’ Union, 6 bid; New York Central consolidated, 973; a 9735; do, p, 95% 29644; Harlem, 147% a 149; Ene, 24 a 44; do. preferred, 41 bid; Reading, 975; a 9734; Michigan Central, 122 a 124; Lake Shore, 88% a #8%{; illinois Central, 146% a 147; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 982g @ 99; Chicago and Northwestern, 7344 a 73%5 do. preferred, 90% @ 903;; Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnatl, 74 @ 75; Rock Island, 11924 a 11994; Milwaukee and St. Paul, 7434 a 744; do. preferred, 8934 @ 894; Toledo and Wabash, 47a 47143 do. preferred, 8634 9 86%; Fort Wayne, 92a 9214; Alton and Terre Haute, 29 @ 2934; do. preferred, 60 bid; Ohio and Mississippi, 207 a 30; Delaware and Lackawanna, 106 @ 10534; New Jersey Central, 100; Chicago and Alton, 148 a 149; Hannibal and St, Joseph, 10874 & 109; do. preferred, 103 a 109; Dubuque ‘and Sioux City, 108%; Columbus, Chicago and In- diana Central, 1934 @ 195%, RAILWAY EARNINGS. ‘The earnings ot the Erie Railway for the first week in February show an increase of $33,025, a8 com- Pared with the corresponding period of 1869.
