MORMONISMH. Progress of the “New Chureh |; of Zion.” Some Divine and Human Revéletions— ‘Text of the Church Constitation—A Lengthy tf not Over-Vomre prehensive Document. Sau LAKE CITY, Jap. 26, 1870. At the meeting last luesday evening Mr. Keisey rose and said that the grand outlines of the consti- tion of this new Churoh of Zion, & rough dratt of Which was now to be presented, had been received from heaven by revelation, but that tts dotails had been left to be supplied by the thougnt of inaivid- nals, A fundamental principle af the system was government, not by force, but by the persuasive induence of love and the wisnes of the poeple. That immortal principle of truth, and other general prin. ciples) m which they had been instructed, had enabled them to prepare a draft of the constitution Of the Church so broad and liberal and comprehen- sive in ali its provisions that-it was destined to attract the attention of he civilized world and commaod (the admiration of the mest | advanced of human mini If waa the Intention of the heavenly powers to demonstrate to this people that they must never more. pin their faith to the coat sieeve of any infiyidaat. All authority and power im the Churob would spring from the people, and rest upon the will not of une goverding but the governed. Mr. Kelsey here told a story whieh illustrated tho exteut to which the Mormons have hitherto. been morally enslaved by the power of the present Priesthood. Th last Monday's issue of the TkRALD an account was given ot the Mormon propagandists on Long Island, and it was reported that Bishop Burton, of Sait Lake City, lad established pranches of the saints at Hempstead, Baidwinavilie and ober lova- tons near Rockvilic Centre. During the past week the war agatnst the “Gentile” world was carried on with increasing vigor, and otier laborers have been Gcapatched north and sonth throughout the island, Several new elders have arrived trom tno City of the Saints, and during this week an additional force of elders and priests, headed by a bishop, will rein- force those already here. ‘The labors of Bishop Burton during tue past week havo been very successful’ at Freeport, the old branch established by Brighany Young about thirty years ago, The church, under the care of J. K. Benedict, an elder baptized by Young oa the first estabiishment of the colony, has been built up and confirmed in the fatth as taught in Utah, ‘Twelve persons, most of them wealthy and able and willing to’co-operate in the work, have been con- verted and baptised there by Lisuop Burton and bis assistants, of Whom he has eight or nine. winsville twenty Mormons, most of them recent couveris, have rented a large upper room inthe smyle hotel of wnich the village boasts, and there hou! forth three tines a day to crowds of wondering rusties, teiltug them of the recent reveiations from the Most High, and warning them of the coming trouble by fireand sword and of the dire destruc- tion of ali who refuse to nelieve m and tender their aliegiance to the Charch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Baldwinyville. L. 1. At Vatchoqne 1s located the nucleus of another branch; at Hemo- stead another, and at Rockville a grand effort 1s being made to estrblish still another, Many of the principal towns in Maine, Mass chu- setts, Pennsylvania and New Jersey have been set apart as districts which are now being worked and consequently a grand rally around the banner of Mormonism may be expected, In Connecticut also proselvtes. are being gathered, and a large statf of missionaries, principally natives of that State, have returned from Utah and come to warn their frenus against the approaching day of wrath, A ‘large reay of imiasionaries Lave been sent out West, 10 Canada and ta Englend and Europe for the purpose of Kathermg ail the members and as many Couveris as can be had to the “valley in the mountains’ or to the Eastern Utah, which. should the movement be successful, 1s to be estaplisned on Long Islaad. Bishop Burton and the other leading Mormon church dignitaries now ia Long Island make po seoret of their intentions, and express themsdlveg a8 being certam of the uitiinate success of their mission and the spread of Mormontsm until it becomes tue established religion of the world. Their objects and Opinions may be yen vest in Hishop Burcon’s own words. Jie saya. ‘We do not seek bloodshea or wai but ag the master reveaied to Joseph Smith that this great Continent was to be the land from which the delegates of Christ were to pe sent Lo all parts of the unbelieving world, and for this purpose, in his own good tne, He will give It lo our peopie, We are de- termined to abide the issue, be tt what it may.” ‘The leaders ol8the movement in Long isiand are pecuuarty reticent in rezard to the new schismaic movement at present taking piace in Salt Lake Civy, and thelr followers on Long Island, no doubt, will be at & loss to reconcile te stiements made to them in regard to the unity and peace which prevails in tho City of the Saints, with the account given by the HskaLp corresponient yesterday of the orzamation of the “church of Zion” and the adopuon by the saints of its consti- tution Polygamy is rarely referred to in the crusade; but the itfe of the saints at Utall 13 painted in the most glowing colors and comparisons arawn between the Social state of the “valley of the mountains” and the targe cities under Christian rule. ‘The principal congregation of the saints on Long Island, however, 48 hot to be found in any of the places already re- ferred to, but in piace much nearer home—14 Grand street, A een —where there 18 quite a large congregation, from which draits are repeatediy mide “for colonists for Utah, The movement haa obtained a very strong footing in Williamsburg, d the degree of success which they continue to meet wih vee rise Lo much apprehension on tae part of the ‘hristian community there, ‘Three sessions are beid every Sunday, and the large room engaged by them im Grand street 1s rapidiy becoming too small jor he increasing congreyations. A special session was held yesterday to listen to an address from nko vacksoa, & prominent member of the Church rned from Utah The large room was ccew ded to excess, and a number of the mission- aries Syom Hempstead and district were present. ‘The address contained !tule of public tuterest, It denounced in no measured terms all unbelievers abd held out gowing assurances of bappiness and well-being to ail Who emorace te Mormon fain, ¢ O8MnE With a prophecy that Cougress would be de- Teated vy the hand ot God in any effor:s to check (he spread of Mormouisin or ty take from the saints the inheritance given thei by Heaven.
