Movement. When tus bids for the $1,670,000 at the Sub-Treasury camo to be opened it Was found that there wore as many as forty-seven, proposals, for ® total of nearly seven and & half mililons of dollars. The Prices, however, were 1n most instances so far below the market that the cliqnes who were the instigators of the orders to the different brokers knew they Would not be accepted, or, if accepted, that the gold would be obfained at a yery cheap rate as compared witn the price in the Gold Room. ‘rhe amount bid Tor—$7,319,000—18 the iargost recorded under similar circumstances. The effect upon the market was magical. Gold, whigh had opened at 122:4 and declined to 121% before the sale, now ran up to 12384 amid great excitement. As the after. noon progressed it became evident that the cliques were taking advantage ef the opportunity to sell, and as at this time @ telearam from Washington announced the intro- duction of Senator Sumner’s biil for a return to specie paymonts the price gradually declined to 12294, It 18 not to be inferred, however, that the “pull” tactics have been abandoned. On the contrary, the work of to-day 1s only an interlude in the golden drama, The combinations who are mauipulating tho market are sanguine of putttog gold to 130, which is an advance a8 much beyond tts real value as ite recent prico—119);—-was a fall below. The clear rae would, however, be only ten percent, But, by these Intermediate fiuetuations, so!ling st a small advance and buying back at ao small decline, they intend to net thirty, forty or perhaps even fifty per cent in tne advance from 120 to 130, Such, therefore, is the situation of the gold market at present, and 1t promises to develop in Interest each day, The speculative spirit so long dormant has been aroused, and the victims of the great gold snmsh are among the most eagor to re- trieve their losses. An affair of considerable interestto gold dealers transptred to-day in connection with the routine of business tn gold, It will be remempered that upon the reorganization of the Gold Board, after the Sep- tember panic, much objection was made to the restoration of clearanceg to the Gold Exchange Bank, whose officials, tt ia alleged, acted With favoritism, if not indiscretion, im the conduct of their business, Many brokers have, in fact, since conducted their dealings outside the bank, and have cleared through it only when com- pelled by the necessity of certain transactions. To- day the firm of Messrs. Trevor & Colgate refused to submit a check for $600,000 along with their state- ment, unless the bank simultaneously returned them certified checks for the differences due them from the bank, Both parties bronght their dispute before the Gold Board, Mr. Harney, the president of the bank, reciting his views of the subject and warning all parties having dealings with Messrs. Trevor & Colgate to seitie in future ex-clearing house, ‘The frm stated thas they would not trust a check for so large an amount to the bank pending the Rettlement of statements, Inasmuch ag they feared the embarrassment and delays likely to arise from @ recurrence of tha September embargo on the bank’s operations. Finnaliy; Mr. Harney said the bank would yield on vis occasion, but would insist upon an enforcement of the rules of clearan is in future, So the matter ended for to-day. The Gold Exchange in executive session this after- noon decided that the Arbitration Committee shail hereattcr have powey to adjudicate in all transac- Uons becween members of the Board whenever or ‘Wherever such transactions may take place.. THE STOOK MARKET. Aldiough the Long Room was for @ greater por tion of the day neglected for the more exciting scenes of the Gold Room there was an invereating market for stocks, the prices of which were in the main closely sympathetic with the movements in gold. revealing tho tacts more pininly than ever that the speculative combinations are working boti mar- ots together, Thus, under the depression tn gold at the opentng, there was @ hogitating and uncertain tone to the stock market, but when the numerous bids at the Sub-Treasury had been sige and gola tan tp to 1234, the whofe list took a sud- den upward start, tho leading railwaya being most couspicuous in the advance. The Van- dervilt shares were run up to 03% for the stock and 87% for the serip, while New Jersey Cen- tral touched 904%. Northwest common, catohing the contagion, beunded up to 735, and was closely Followed by Luke Shore, Rock Island and St. Paul, Exceptionally, Reading was quict and heavy, hold- ers being disposed to realize. As i goid, the cliques now began to unioad, and prices fell off, the market closing duil and inactive. Commercial paper ‘Was more current af previously quoted rates, the rate on Call Lot as yet operating for 4 decline in dis- counts. COVRRNMENT BONDS, A buoyavt market for governments ensued upon the advance in gold, and the prominent dealers re- port a scarcity in bonds whieh embarrasses them in ‘the fulfilment or orders. A private telegram from the Treasury Departmont, received to-day fu answer toa request for information, states that the funded debt consists of $800,000,000 registered bonds and $1,390,000,000 coupon bonds. Inasmuch as about $1,000,000,000 of the latter is held in Europe and as the balance is largely im the posseasion of banks, corporations and private investors, the scarcity of the speculative tssnes in Wall Streat is readily accounted for, Tue market at the close wasa fraction below the highest prices of the day. ‘The tinal street prices were as follows:— United States currency sixes, 100% & 110; do. wixes, 1883, registercd, 117% @ 118; do. do., con- pon, 116 & 11644; do. fve-twenties, registered, May nd November, 115% a 116; do. do., 1862, coupon, do. do., 1163 a 111 do. do., 1864, do. do., 115% &116}¢; do, do,, 1865, do. do,, 11576 @ 11654; ao, do., registered, January and July, 1143 @ 114%; do. do., 1865, conpon, (0. do., 11456 @ 1143; do. do., 1867, do. do., 114% @ 117%} do. do., 1888, do. ao,, 114% @ 115; 40, ten-fortica, registered, 112 @ 11234; do, do., cou- pon, 1123¢ a 11274.
