€ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SaruRDAy, Deo, 11-6 P, M. ‘The week closed upon & quiet, firm market, no- ticoable for the absence of any special feature. The ‘weekly statement of the associated banks presents @ favorable exhibit, without diifering very much tn 1t# general resuit from that of last weak, the slight outflow of currency that occurred during the weak being more than couatervalan by the receipts during the same period. Tne (ovewting are the totals of the two last statemeuts:— 245,499 «$253. 182,179,798 Deposits....... Legal tenders. . 30,27 4 46,884,429 And the following are the specie éifferences:— Decrease tn loans. + $508,041 Decrease in specie + OLT17T Decreaso in circulauon . GL ecrease in deposits... 510,342 ecrease in legal tenders... 895,155 From the above it will be seen the total Mabilities Rave been reduced $527,693, against a loss in resources of $22,022. The vanks hoid of lawinl money im excess of the legal reserve $22,623,313, which 18 a waln over the preceuimg week of $108,652, to which may be addea $1,000,000 specie, that amount, sold yesterday by the government, not being included in tho statement. The money market worked to-day weil up to tne legal rate, which figure was generally paid by borrowers on Call, ag well on governmouts a3 on stock collateral. Exceptions in the case of the former occurred at six, but were rare, Discounts conuinue about as last quoted, prime donvie name accceptances pass- Ing at 9 to 123 per cent and single paper at 12 to.24 per cent, The street was singu- larly indifferent to the news from Wash- ington, to-day, the announcement that Mr. Ingersoll had a third ume mtroduced his bill proviaing for the issue of an additional $44,000,000 of legal ‘Senders producing no elfect whatever, the accompa- Hying intelligence of its reference to the Banking Committee serving to counteract what- ever influence upon values it might other- wise have had. Tne well-known views of Repre- sentative Garfeld, the chairman of that commit- tee, upon the subject of the currency, he being a Pronounced contractionist, render that reference of Mr. Ingersoll’s bill equivalent to its defeat, and in- eed, considering the struggie that has taken place Detween the Committees of Ways and Means and Banking and Currency to get possession of this bill, ‘With the fact before stated of Mr. Garfleld’s declared Hnancial policy, this disposition of it may lUkewise be regarded as expressing the sense of the House, at ell events, against inflation, It would be premature, however, tosuppose that the fignt is already over. It is more likely that thisis simply a “first knock- down” for Garfleld. Tae Western men, who, in the interest of their agricultural constituents, go for un- Annited greenbacks and high prices, are not likely to Bive up the contest #0 easly, but may con- Mdently be expected to make a stubborn fight yet. Gold was steady to-day within a margin of % per cent, ranglug in extreme quotations from 123 to 123%, the bulk of the day’s busimess being, however, about equally divided between 1233; and 1233{. At the close of business the price was 12334 to 123%; 6, 644 and 7 per cent were paid for carrying. The steamship Pereire to-day took out $91,000 in Bpecie. Governments were about steady through- ‘Out the day, but weakened towards the close, and as the reault of the day’s dealings exhibit a decline of 36 to % per cent om most of the issues. Kegis- tered °81 sixes and ten-.ortios were exceptions and closed strong and higher, State bonds were firm im Tennessecs and Norsh Carolinas, as the features, and generaily gu the entire lisi. A meeting of bona- holders of the State of Tennessee was held in the afternoon to discuss some means of protectiug their interests in that regard. A geutieman present Btated chat the debt of the State was $39,000,000, of ‘Which $30,000,000 was issued to railroads, one-half Of whicn, he said, cou\1 pay such indebtedness on demand. It was further stated that the railroads of the State had in reality cost wore than double the a@mount of the subsidy. It is proposed to ap- point a committee, who shail proceed to Tennessee and make application to the Legisiature to have the defaulting railroads placed in the hands of a com- missioner for the benefit of tie bondholders. The stock market was moderately active and buoyant to-day, aud with au average business fairly distri- buted among the speculative shares prices were well maintained. Adams Express was a leading feature of the market, advancing one and one-nalf Percent. Itisstated that the company, at their meet ing on next Tuesday, are to discuss a propusition for the purchase of the railway lines givea up by them at the time of their compromize with the Merchants’ Union. These comprise some forty-eight hundred miles. United States Kxpress advauced in sympa- thy mith Adams. Jus Extent—Needlese Destrection of Property— Appearance ef the Burnt District, [From the SS Bulletin, Dec. 4.) The most destructive fire taat has ever visited Galveston occurred’ last night, It in at tho corner of Tremont and ‘Strand, in the store of the Coln Brothers. The fire from the Cohn corner ex- tended in two dictions, west and south. It took in is compass the main part of five blocks, A few fireproof buildings were saved, but they were not many. If the question 1s asked why did this fire spread and ravage so wide an extent of territory, We answer that it began in the heart of an old ary wooden neighborhood; that the firo engines were out of order; two of the steamers would not work and there was an insuiliclency of water. This lagt was the great trouble. Everybody, firemen and citizens, worked with a itty will, but they worked as @ body without a head, an army without a gen- eral. Goods were carried out and deposited where in ten minutes they were in flames, Houses were saffered to burn that if pulied down would have stopped the further extension of the fire. ‘These were ihe facts:—Tbe Mayor was there and hard at work; the cuties of tho Fire;Department were tbere and hard at work, but there was not an intelli- goat whole, a systematic unity of action. THR BURNT DISTRIOT—APPBARANCE OF THR RUINS, (From the Galveston Civilian, Dec. 5.) The district laid in ashes by the conflagration of yesterday moruing presents @ most desolate aspect to the eye at present. Where but ayew days since stood stately brick edifices, large frame stores aud warehouses, neat cottages and handsome residences nothing remains butan unsightly mass of black and smouldering ruins. One of the saddest sights in all the region devas. tated by the fiery element ts that ofthe Merchants’ Mutual Jogurauce Company's building, of which nothing pow reinalns but @ meterogengous mass of brick and mortar, covering tue sales of the different firms wbo occupied the building, We uadorstand that the safe of (he compat Which 18 encased in a Greproof vauit, is sapposed to be all rigiit, although 1% has as yet deen impossible to clear away the mass of ruins covering tt. | The west side of Tremont, from Post Ofice street to the Strand, presents quite an “open front,” as all of the butidings on that portion of the streot, with the exception of a few brick ones, were destroyed, and the smouldering embers of the fire add ad- ditional desolation to the sceue. Tremont sireet has been the scene of the majority of the large fires oc- curring in the city, and the larger portion of it, south of Post OMice street, Ly at one time or nother, been laid ia ashes, This street had just ‘on recover from the disastrous fires that visited it immediately after the War, which copsumed the Tremont House, one of Galveaton’s favorite hoteis, and several other buiidings. Gangs of men were busily engaged during the afternoon etting out the numerous safes from the ruias, The majority gotten out were found to be too hot to be opened af once, and were allowed to coo! until this morning, when they will be opened and their contents examined, Among those opened were those of Albert Bail, Jr., and 1. C. Lynch, and their contents, comprising money and valuabie papers, were found to be in excelient condition. The large iron safe of Messrs. M. W. Shaw & Pallaia was also opened Jast evening, and its contents, con- slating of Valuable watches and jewelry, were found to be uninjured by the heat. BURNED TO DEATH BY “UNION Oi. Mrs. Margaret Gallagher, the woman who was s0 badly burned on Friday evoning at her residence, 117 Charles street, by the explosion of a can of oi, died about two o'clock yesterday morning. The informa- tion at the Coroner's oMce regarding the matter was to the effect that Mrs. Gailagher, while engaged in filling @ lamp with whatis known as ‘Union oti! by the light of @ maton held by @ boy, the can con- taining the fluid exploded, thus setting fire to her bacaig en | with the result stated.
