Yesterday, at 805 Broadway, the annual meeting of the Tract Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was held and the annual reports presented, from which it appeared that the amount of grants made during the year was $5,639, that the Good News, a Sunday school paper, has a circulation of 72,200 copies monthiy and that six colporteurs were employed by the society during the year. The trea- surer’s report showed @ balance in haud January 1, 1889, Of $444 17; receipts since that date, $15,531 54; expenditures, $11,369 46; balance now on hand, $2,606 25. ‘The Rev. Dr. Curry calied attention toa aiscrep- ancy of $2,000, which appeared between the balance on hand as reported by the minutes of ihe last an- nua meeting as read aud that of the treasurer just presented, and he wanted to know waether there were any facts or figures to show what had become of 1. Dr, LANAHAN, the treasurer, said that he was the nominal treasurer and only opened the ietters, which he then transferred to Mr. Grant, the cashier. Tins gentleman explained that he had followed the cus- tom of his predecessors for years and had reported only {roi January Yo date, but that in the quar- terly reports aud ia the printed annummreports the discrepancy, which 13 only apparent, 15 Always made clear. In the nature of the case he could not make out a fall and complete report until the expiration of the year. Mr. Terry thonght that explanation insufficient, A twelvemonth’s report ought to be furnished to the society, Dr, WIS remarked that there was nothing in the constitution or bylaws of the society demanuing a report of this kind to be presented at all; that these reports properly belonged to the Board of Managers, Mr. JOBL SAMMIS sald that if the society had no control over its own officers and Board of Managers it was time to change the rule and assume control, Dr. BROWN said the trouble was in the fact that for a series of years there had been no annual report presented to the society, The reports merely coy- ered eleven months and a fraction of the twelfth, and wiile he had no doube that every doilar could be satisfactorily accounted for, he desired that an annual report suould be presented to the society. He therefore moved that the treasurer be instructed 10 present annual reports hereafter, covering the period between Vecemper 1 and November 30, A letter fronr Brother Witting, of Guttenburg, Germany, thauking te society for its donations of tracts and money and giving an account of colpor- tear work there, was read. The meeting then adjourned.
