The prisoner, as alleged, had swindled a number of peo- ple out of money by sending specimens of dry goods and promising to send patterns of dresses, &c., on the receipt of tive dollars. The prisoner was remanded for trial until to-morrow. ‘Tne ELEctiON Fravps.—The evidence against the parties said to have been concerned in the recent election trauds, by altering the official returns and giving more votes to candidates than they really got, 1s said to be accumulating. Some of the canvassers have disappeared and others have beea under the influence of liquor since election day. Now (ue work 1s mediately carried out, DESPERATE SYREEY FIGHT BETWEEN GIRLS.—Two girls, named Catharine and Jane Stephens, were taken before Justice Walsh yesterday afternoon to answer a charge of assault on Margaret McCabe and Hannah Corrigan. The jatter reside in New York, and were on their way thither on Tuesday after- noon, When they met the accused at the corner ot Main and York streets. if they had ever been amiable creatures—a quality which the sterner sex suppose all the weaker to possess to a greater or lesser extent—they had certainly forgotten tt on this occasion, for the result shows they were ali ready to deprive each other of their cnig- nons, if not of their eyes. Jane Stephens, who isa cripple, Was leaning upon her crutch, and, as under- stood, Was quarreling with some otuer girls, Her sister Catharine was a little distance behind her. Margaret MeCabe and Hannah Corrigan then came upon the scene and stopped to heartherow, Jane Stephens jooked at her, indulged tn a few remarks not usually heard in refined circles, and wound y by, asking “What are you looking at?’ Hannal said “At you, you're so pretty.” War was then deciared and a severe battle fought, and wheo the lice arrived the battle ground was found to be strewn with chig- nons, hairpins, combs, earrings and splinters of the aforesaid crutch. Catharime Stephens got Hannah Carrigan down and was pummelling her severely, while Jane was using her cruich as a weapon and doing good execation. When taken to the Forty-second precinct station house they all bore the marks of the confict, and each party charged the other with being the aggressor.
