rn FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarurpay, Nov. 20—6 P. M. The weekly statement of the associated banka is ‘anfavorable, showing a3 1t does a loss in reserve of ‘Dearly @ million and a half of dollars. The Treasury movements during the week, which expired Friday ‘orning, go to account for a large portion of the de- crease in legal. tenders, Other things being equal, ‘this loss will be made up next week, Were the bank statement made up each Monday morning the un- favorable features of this week would not appear. ‘The loss in legal tenders 1s over two and a half Hons, owing partially to the factg above referred and parttally toshipments to the West and Southwest. An examination of the statement shows that the banks have enlarged their loans to the extent of nearly two millions. Now, as the deposits have been at @ standatill, it is evident that the remittances Westward have been largely composed of these doans, In other words, the Western banks not having funds here upon which to draw, Eastern Rouses with Western connections have shipped currency to them. The last two statements contrast ‘as follows:— Nov, 13. Nov, 20, $253,068,008 27,929,071 34,231,022 eos! 183,734,190 Legal tenders... He o09;¢01 48,455, L21 The changes in each item are in detail as {ol- lows:— Increase in + $1,887,451 Increase 2 ecie Increase fh circulation Decrease in deposits..... Decrease in legal tenders. A brief computation of the figures will show that the banks hold nearly twenty-two millions reserve in excess of the amount required by law. The agitation of the question of specte payments Jed to considerable animation in the Gold Room, especially ag all transactions might be made through the Clearing House, the Gola Bank opening in that capacity on Monday next. ‘The price of gold declined from 1265 @ 12634, wien tt encountered a deter- mined opposition on the part of those who are more congervative in their views and became steaay, The Speculators seemed about evenly divided on the gubject. When the “bears” sold down to 126% the “bulls” took all that was offered. When the “bulls” ‘bid the price up to 1264; the ‘bears’? sold them all they wished. The range of the market is shown in In the gold. loan market from seven to three per cent were paid for carrying. The total imports at this port for the last week amount to $3,148,851, against $3,657,355 for the corresponding week of last year, Oy Gecrease as compared with the pre- vious week quite marked in the line of goneral merchandise. TOtAl....ecscscescncsccscesseesceececees vers $172074 The government market opened strong at the highest figures of yesterday, but under the influence of the decline in gold and of free sales by the foreign bankers gave way and slowly settled a balf to three. quarters per cent. The London market was contra- dictoriy reported by the two cables, apd in the con- fusion there was a pressure to sell, especially as the foreign bankers who bought yesterday were selling to-day. The market closed steady after these move- ments, with the following quotations:—United States currency sixes, 107%{ a 108; do. sixes, 1881, registered, 1173 @ 11724; do. coupon, 1175; a 117%; do. five-twenties, registered, May and November, 113 @ 11844; do, 1862, coupon, do., 115% a 115%; do, 1864, coupon, do., 11334 a 11344; do, 1865, coupon, do., 11334 811374; do., registered, January and July, 11534 #11534; do. 1865, coupon, do., 115%; @ 115%; do, 1867, coupon, do., 115% a 115%; ao, 1868, coupon, do, 116% a 11574; do. ten-forties, regls- tered, 10744 410734; do. coupon, 107% a 1077. The money market was steady at six per cent as the rate on call loans with pledge of stock coliate- rals and five on government securities. A little activity was reported about hatf-past two o'clock and seven per cent was obtained in some portions of the street, butthe market became qniet before the close of banking hours at five to six per cent, The increase of discount operations by the banks during the week has given paper more currency in the open market, and the range of street discounts was from eight to fifteen per cent for all grades of prime acceptances, long and short. Foreign ex- change was dull and steady at previously quotea Tates. There was more animation in Southern bonds and an irregular market. The new North Carolinas were heavy and declined to 36, the special tax issues being steady in the vicinity of 40, The old Tennos- gees have been again subjected to a pressure of sales owing to the impression that there {s too wide @ difference between their price and that of the new bonds since the official announcement that all issues are equally binding upon the State. The Mi! souri sixes, continuing their upward movement, ad- vanced to 92 on the report that whatever the real obligations of the State as to the coin redemption of the principal tho interest will in future be pald in gold. The rest of the list was dull as to the volume of business, but active in prices, particularly the Western shares, which have been favorably affected by the concur- rent testimony of increased earnings. The Vander- bilt securities were feverish, unsettled and lower. Reading was strong and rose to 977j. In the mis- cellaneous list Pacific Mail broke again to 53%, while Western Union, persevering in its reversal of movement, sold as high as 37, The bank statement caused a brief furry and prices declined a fraction; but upon the explanation of its unfavorable fea- tures thero was arecovery at the close to the best Prices of the day, and the whole market was strong in the final dealings on the sidewalk before the Stock Exchange. ‘The following were the closing prices of stocks at the Jast session of the Stock Exchange:—Canton, 52 a 63; Cumberland, 26% a 2714; Western Union, 364 93635; Quicksilver, 124 @ 14; Mariposa, § a 834; do. pre- ferred, 16% a 164; Pacific Mall, 65 @ 55%; Adams Express, 68% a 583;; Wells-Fargo Express, 18 a 19%; American Express, 34 a 35; United States Express, 62 a 6234; Merchants’ Unton Express, 934 bid; New York Central 182% a 183; do., consolidated, 92 & 92545 do., scrip, 82% a 83; Hudson River, 162 ® 163; Harlem, 1843; Erie, 28% a 28%; do. pre- ferred, 49; Reading, 97% » 971; Michigan Central, 121; Lae Shore, 6954 889%; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 82% a NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1869.-TRIPLE SHEET. & 83; Chicago and Northwestern, 71} @ 713<; do. pre- ferred, 86 & 8634; Cleveland, Columbus and Cinein- nat!, 74 bid; Rock Island, 103% @ 103%; Mil- waukee and St. Paul, 68 @ 68%; do. preferred 833, @ 83%; Toledo and Wabasb, 68 a 59; Fort Wayne, 85% 8 86%; Alton and Terre Haute pre- ferred, 57 @ 58; Ohio, and Misvissippi, 26% a 26%; Delaware and Lackawanna, 105 @ 10534; New Jer- sey Central, 92}, @ 93; Chicago ana Alton, 149% & 161; do., preferred, 149; Morris and Essex, 87% & 88; Hannibal and St. Joseph, 108 bid; do. preferred, 108 bid; Columous, Chicago and Indiana Central, 258 25%.
