About six o’clock yesterday morning the dowh mail train of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad met with an accident, three-quarters of a mile west of Ligbon, which came near beingyattended with the most tragic consequences. While the train was moving along at ita usual rapid speed, there being nosuspicion of any danger impending, the ladies’ car aad the sleeping car were suddenly and violent- ly thrown from the track by the breaking of a rall under the wheels of the ladies’ car. ‘The accident happened at a time when the train was on the creat ofasteepembankment. Strange to aay, thongh seven or eight persons were more or less painfully and se- verely bruised, no serious injuries were sustained by any of the passengers or railroad hands. The lamps which were buyning in the two cars were put out by the concussion, leaving the disordered acene in dark- ness, The stove in the ladies’ car, being one of the new patente, secured to the floor and roof of the car, did not slip from its place, and its doors did not open, thus saving the terror-stricken passengers Sige the possible additional distress and danger of re. P. Cotting, a mailing clerk in the Post Office, was engaged in stamping lettera at seven o'clock last evening, something con- tained in one of the ers exploded with @ loud report, the powder or other Matter burning his right nand and wrist ao badly as to require dressing bya physician. The envelope was also badly torn by the explosion, so much so that the name of the party to whom it was addressed Was destroyed. Knough was left, however, to show that it Was directed to Mrs. S,, box 381 Woonsocket, RJ. The superscription appeared to be ina lady’s hand writing, and it 1s conjectured that some jealous or revengeful woman had taken this method to muti- late if not Kill the object of ber hatred. The mur- derous missive was dropped into one of the poxes atthe Post Office between six ana seven o'clock and hopes are entertained that the guilty party will be discovered.—Aoston Herald, Oct. 20.
