FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONDAY, Cet. 18-6 P, M. Some ancastness was felt at the opening ef bust- ness to-day lest the ineeption of the movement of ourrency to the South and West should precipitate @n active meney market, and lenders were inclined to exact higher rates on call, During this period there was a good demand fer mency at six to seven per cent, but after two ovclock the lenders were in the majority and loans were made as low as five per cent on governments and at six quite frecly on stocks. The inexplicable portion of the bank siate- ment of Saturday is now cleared up. It seeims that fm the recent remarkable advance tn gold the pre- cious metal found its way here from ail sections of the country, the out of town banks and the people generally feeling positive that they couid never again sell so advantugconsiy whatever gold they were possessed of, It was the drain of currency to offset this influx of gold that assisted the ten stringency in money which ped to bring about ‘the panie tn the stock mark nus day by day we are getiing at the fuli history of that eventful period. Now the counter current has set in, Boston and other ports of entry are in necd of gold to make customs payments, aud the gold is going out of our city again, greenbacys ceming here in exchange. Honee the bank statement on Saturday last showed a falling off in specie and a gain tm lozai tenders, The discount market was stendy, bi prime names were not negotiable less than ten to twelve percent. ‘Tho fatiure of the tirm of L. M. Hofman & Uo, was announced at the Stock Exchange to-day; but no particulars transpired con- cerning thelr Habilities, It is supposed that they were heavy losers in the stock pantie, but fought off their suspension until to-day, The Goid Exehange to-day authorized the newly elected directors to change the pian of the Clearing House frem that originally suggested in tho board and committed to thetraction. The Stock Exchange has referred to tho appropriate committee a resolution adopted this forenoon favoring the organization of a gold depart- ment. The creditors ef the Gold Exchange Bank, at a meeting this afernoen, signed a paper by which they agree to take no legal action against the bank during the ensuing ten days, the object of the step being to enable the institution te resume, 1f possible, Under the direction of the receiver. Foreign ex- change was steady and firm on the basis of 10935 for prime bankers’ sixty day and 109/, for sight sterling bills. Governments were more active and advanced about a quarter per ecnt on the leading speculative issues, The rogular @oealers report a risk revival of the private invest- Ment demand, doubtless stimutated by the prox- Amity of the 1at ef November, when a Jarge instal- ment of interest falls due, The follewing were to- night’s closing street prices:—United States currency mixes, 10774 a 108; do. sixes, 1881, registered, 11914 @ 120; do. do., coupon, 11924 a 120; do, Sive-twentica, regiatered, May and November, 1154 a 115 4g; do. do., coupon, 1962, do, 12014 a 1203; do. do., coupon, 1864, do., 11934 a 11954; do. do., coupon, 1865, do., 1195¢ @ 11934; do. do., registered, January and Jnly, 318 a 11824; do. do., coupon, 1865, do., 118 a 11834; do. do., coupon, 1867, do., 118'¢ a 11844; do. do., e@oupon, 1868, do., 118 a 118; do. ten forties, reglatered, 108 a 10854; @o, do., coupon, 103% a 10834. ‘The stock market was active and excited on the ‘Vanderbilt shares, pariicularly tor Harlem, which rose to 14244 on the apprehension that the company ‘witl pnt in force the provisions of their charter authorizing the construction of a horse railroad in Madison avenue, above Forty-second street. It seems that an extension below that point will re- quire the sanction of the corporation, which, im view of the agitation of the residents of Yorkville for better travelling facilities, will not be dimcult to obtain. ‘The report was again revived on the street this afternoon that the consolidated New York Oentral and Hudson River Company will lease the Harlem road, double the stock from seven to fourteen millions and pay seven or eight per cent per avnum thereupon. In New York Centsal the advance was to 187%, and tn Hudson River to 1694. The buoyancy of these stocks was contagious and caused a general movement in the ether railways, Reck Island selling at 109, Northwest common at 734, Lake Shore at 9234 and St. Paul at 67%. The news of the burning of the Lake Shore Gar works at Buffalo caused a subsequent decline to 90%, but there was a rally when it was reported that not only was the loss trifling, but that the building was fully imesured. The general Nst “did not maintain the advance, however, ‘but was left behind by the Vanderbilt stocks, some of the shares, Rock Isiand particularily, becoming ‘Weak and heavy. Erie was subjected to the de- pressing effects of the reported strike of its em- ployéa, and went oif to 29%¢, from which It rallied to 9034 on the explanation that the delay inthe pay- ment of operatives was dne to the prevailing ecarcity of small bills, At the close of business it gain declined, touching 203%.
