FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. _-Wepygapay, august 25—6 P, M. “Phe money market, although still abundantly sup- plied owing to the gencral preference on the part of capitalists to employ thet funds on call, was ashade more active towards the close of banklag hours this afternoon. Up to this tiie tne rate even on miscel- Janeous collaterals had rarely exceeded seven per cont, but under the better demand for money arising OUs of the “bullish” tone te operations on the Stock Exchange the stock houses were larger borrowers than for some time past, and seven per cent was more freely pati, It should be stated in this connection that the Treasury disbursed the money in payment for $83,730 worth “of the bonds accepted at the government purchase to-day. ‘The balance, amounting to over @ million and a half of dollars will come ‘apon the street to-morrow, when also part payment ‘will probabiy be made for the $1,000,000 of bonds ‘shen to be retired forthe Sinking Fund. Payment ‘67 tu8 bonds purchased to-day will be made tywo- thirds in legal tender notes and one-third tn national bank notes. The Assistant Treasurer, General Butterfeid, ts very desirous of accommodating the merchants, and the communty generally, We have hhad occasion already to approve of the reforms In- wtituted in the Treasury wullding. Another with re- ference to the payment of government interest, one muen needed, has just been made, General Butter- Id has arranged that the registered coupons due September 1 sliall be paid in the room facing on Pine atrect instead of in the Rotunda, and that seats shall be provided for those in walting. To- day authority was granted for ‘the further ‘transfer ‘of gold on San Francisco account, the amount being one million dollars, The sales of bills ‘to proc! old for this transfer were reflected in the weakér character of sterling exchange, @ few prime bills sélling out of second hands as low ‘as 109% for sixty days and 109% for sight, although ‘the nominal quotations wore from 109% a 109% for the former and 109% a 11044 for the latter class of bills, The increasing exports each week and the very doubtful amount of our indebtedness to Europe on last year’s business, as shown by the statistics io the Bureau at Washington, leave the market without strength. The failure of a produce firm was reported to-day, but no statement was given of their Mabdilities, Government bonds were strong in response to the further purchase by the government, the offerings at the Sub-Treasury amounting to less than four mil- ions. Their firmness was maintained late in the day despite the sharp decline in Europe, and the market seems to repeat its customary practice of holding its own in the face of a foreign dectine, how- ever much it may ailvance when quotattons abroad improve. Ofcourse the higter price of gold had a great deal to do with sustaining prices, but the goneral undertone of governments is strong on account of the present programme of Treasury purchases and an expected contiau- ation thereof next month. The following were the closing strect prices this eventn, vnltea States sixes, 1881, registered, 1223 a 123; do. do., coupon, 123 a 1234; do. fve-twentics, registered, 221% 0 121%; do. do., coupon, 1862, 123 a 12334; do. o,., coupon, 1864, 12174 8122; do. do., coupon, 1865, 121% @ 122; do. do., coupon, Dew, 1845, 1205 a 120%; do. do., coupon, 1567, 120% a 121; do. do, coupon, 1968, 12034 a 120%; do. ven-forties, regis- tered, 111 a 111%; do. de., coupon, 1147 @ 116; cur- rency bonds, 110 a 11034. (uew 119,68 There was an excited market for gold. the strag- gle between the “bulls” and the “bears” waxing very warm, The latter have put out another heavy dine of sales, ag revealed in the clearances and bal- ances to-day at the Gold Bauk; but the pressure of such sales, like the superincumbent weight on an arch, seems to strengthen the ‘bull’ position, the price rising through them to 133%. In the after- noon there was 4 reaction to 133'4, but on the news of thé gold transfers through the Sub-Treasury and of lower quotations for our securities in Europe there was another advance to 133%. Tue range of the market is shown in the table:— 10 A. M..... 133% 2P.M. 20:01 a. M. 1 1, 132% 13359, 18334 18334 The demand for cash gold was again active, but the rates paid for carrying were quite uniform, rang- Ing from three to two per cent for and ex Clearing House, The Cunard steamer to-day took out only @ nominal shipment. The disbursements of coin in- terest amounted to $43,367. Atthe Gold Exchange Bank the gross clearances were $119,968,000; the moid balances, $4,526,722, and the currency balances, $6,135,885. ‘The stock market opened without much animation and barely steady at the closing quotations of the evening previvus. Soon after the morning board there was a genoral movement in sympathy with large purchases of New York Central and Hudson River on renewed intelligence from Saratoga that the consolidation of the two roads will be effected this week, “Five-Iwenty’’ of the Albany Journal ay! Our Saratoga letters of this morning (August 24) renew the rumors of last week touciung the long expected union of the interests of the Central and Hudson River Railroads. Treasurer Worcester hag almost entirely recovered his usual good health, and yesterday journeyed to Saratoga to pay hia Tespects to the galiant Commodore and his bride, As the alarmiug tilness of Mr. Worcester was the only reason for the postponement of the consoil- dation of the tworoads, Dame Rumor has it that the Ast of September will find the at present separated links one combined chain of roads trom New York to Buffalo. The duiness in Central and Hudson River shaves of late does not Jook to a speedy return to the hig prices of some few weeks since, when Central touched 219 and Hudson 195; yet such a fail may be only one of the many dodges that specuia- tora indulge in just previous to some grand move- ment for better figures. We shall see. It is said tne Commodore has not given up his pet scheme of uniting the interests of Lake Shore with the Central- Hudson Railroad, and that so soon as he can mani- pulate aome of the at yes Lockwood interest he ‘will place bimself at the head of a ‘at through Chicago line that wiil be princely in its equipments and a source of immense weaith to the fortunate stockholders, Now that hia attention can be with- drawn from ‘Mountata Boy” and the Saratoga turf we look for’ exciting movements in the stocks in which he is so deeply interested, These facts provably explain the movement which to-day carried Central to 202%¢ and Hudson River to 184. Harlem seems to receive less con- @ideration from the speculative community, There ‘was 4 reaction for Central to 200%, whence it rose to 202, cldsing off a fraction from tuis figure, In a@ympathy with this advance there was a general “bull? movement in the whole list, in which even Erie participated, selling as Ligh as 30%. North- ‘West at first fell off, the common touching 827; on the report of @ decrease of $65,000 in the earnings Jast week, buton tbe announcement that Commo- dore Vanderbilt was personally interested tn the election next month there was @ recovery to 84%. The range of the leading shares was as follows, Pacitic Mail, in the miscellancous list being strong add active, and the expresses weak:— Highest. “_ est, 20296 . New York Central Harlem.... Alabamas were strong in consequence of the recent injunction against the Brunswick Railway, and the ew bonds of South Carolina active in consequence of the flattering prospects of cotton in that State. ‘The following shows the results of to-day's busl- ness at the Unitea States Sub-Treasury in this General balance yesterday.
