Of gourse @ a«imilar scene may often be enjoyed on the Union grounds, but that of yesterday was little beyond the ordinary, for there were men present as plsyers and spectators who had not taken part in @ game of ball Jor years, and who were masters of the sport before it became a recognized profession. Maudit's hit sent Beach home, but Maudit got no farther than second base, ag Grum, sending a high ball to right Oeld, was captared by Pinkham very prettily. Snyder then followed, and in rapid succession made three strikes; but Jewett, not getting the ball until the secoud’ bound, was obliged to throw 1t to first base, thus heading off te striker and ending the innings 2 with one run, ‘Toe new champion nine then took the bat to face Grum’s pitching, a¢ 8; prague had not yet arrivea. Allison popped ‘up a font which Was Heach-ed on the fy and Allison roti Patterson gent a hot grounder to short stop where Devyr was playing, and Mr. Patterson waa cared for at first base by Devyr and Campbell. Mr, Martin was treated toa afnilar dose immediately alterwards, and the new champions retired without arun. This result was loudly cheered, and whispers weit around how fanny it wouid be if the old chaps should whip the ne ‘ones, Judging by the style of the applause here Were many present who would have been thehty ‘aelighted to to see the old men victorious; Dut Js Was hoping for too mach to hope that they would Wy rey through. ‘hen the Sixty-niners ob- fainea e lead they managed to hoid it, but they were Sobliged to work for it Of the playing on the occasion Wood's at second, Devyr’s at short and Campbeil’s at first, are particularly praiseworthy. Wood seemed to pe alinost ubiquitous; ue was everywhere that any chance for fielding the ball was likely to ‘be given. Devyr watched the points and fielded as sharpiy almost as ne had ever done, and Campbell vaptured every- thing that could be captared by @ man in his post. tion, In the outfleld Maudit threw himself around and did as much ground and lofty tumbling as of or, and worked withal, quite siiarply, An oppor- ity for a fycateb, which it was thOaght he could not get up to, was nipped handsomely. Grum and Snyder each succeeded in putting &@ dead stop to the Bilge of the ball on oue occasion. Beach, at third although i a position with which he was en- firely ‘undeauainied, worked quictly and steadily, 8) ué and Beach with the batter between em, looked so much Be “old times’? as to call Hp comment quite frequently, “it looks natural see mm here.” To detail the game further woud be superfluous, as the following score will tell the story ef the game quite plainiy:— BIXTY-THEEE.
