But very little progress has been made by the shop tailors iu their strike. The committee sat all day at 42 avenve A anJ several shop meetings took place ast might, but the men seem ¢o see that the fight vefore them wili be long and severe, and the main business transacted Was the'thorough organization of tee shops on a war footing. No new acts of violence againsé watchmen have been reported, and this 1s due mainly vo the fact that miauy of tae men on strike have employed their wives to'act as detectives in their stead, and these feinale detectives do their duty. Strike of the Bank Plate Printers=The New Currency Printing~The Government and the Plate Printers in Accord—Mutual Case ot More “Stamps” Wanted—The Bank Note Printing Companies Agree with the Government, Yet Disagree with the Printers. With the exception of the five dollar national bank notes, which are printed by the Continental Bauk Note Company of tnis city, all the printing of United States currency 18 done for the government by the National Bank Note Company, of No. 1 Wall Sirect, and by the American Bank Note Company, of 142 Broadway. A large part of this class of printing was formeriy done at the government works in Washington, but when it was decided to issue the mew ten, iifteen, twenty-five and flity cent frac- tional currency, some of which is already in circulation, the authorities at Washington found tat the work could be done more cheaply by the iirms in New York than by the government them- selves, Hence a contract was concluded by which the two companies above referred to should print the whole of the new fractional currency, and they have been of late pusily employed upon the work. ‘The recent strike, however, of the greater number of the plate printers of the National Bank Note Com- pany, and a commotion among the printers of the American Bavk Note Company, have threatened to de.ay the carrying out of these contracts with the United States government, and consequently the msuing, as rapidly as desirable, of a requisite amount of the new fractional currency. Most of the men employed in this class of work have been appren- laces of these companies, and have been employed by tuem for years. The wages paid them are much larger thau those paid to almost every other class of mechanical workmen, The work 1s paid for by the pecs and as there 1s always an abundance of it to e done 4 fuir Workman can with about eight hours’ Work a day carn forty dollars or more a week. Each of toe two compauies at present engaged in oe ing the uew fractional currency has orders ey on hand to keep their entire force fully employed fo: @ ver, even should no further orders come in during that ume. Both companies execute fine prinung for suercantile firms, so that the | apne ge print- ing is, alter all, UU a minor though very important = of tneir business. At the time of the strike in ue National Company seveuty-six men were em- ployed there. THE STRIKE AND ITS IMMEDIATE CAUSE. The plate printers have for three ber past been paid the same scale Of prices from a Nxed tariff; and as the wages earned were unusually good no de- Mand for an incre.se had up to the present strike been made, The plates used in printing the new factional currency are two inches wider, but one mech shorter, and it ‘s said require more ume and javor to prit fom than tose with which the men nad previous'y been accustomed to work. When the printing of the new currency was begun no com- Jain seems Lo bave been made on this ground; but st week @ movement was started among a few of ue plate prinvers of the Nationa! Bank Note Com- pauy, gud, spreading, hud gained suiicient strength am nz the men to make them feel confident of success in making a demand for an increase of wages. Accordingly, on the 26th of July a paper, signed by three of the men, asking for an in- creuse oi ten cents additionai for every 100 im; aod siuns made by the new plates, was sent tn, men, who seemed to be the prime movers’ in the Muvyement which threatened a strike, were imme- diately dismissed, and the remainder of the men were inlormed that any grounds of complaint they might have on the scure of wages must be repre- seu ed irom them as @ vody, and laid in proper forin besore the directors of the company for their de- cision. Forty-four of the men, however, sympa- tized with the three who bad already taken the ative, and struck on the 28th of July. The strike ‘ounded entirely On the new fractional currency work Wich at present is being Bal Tor at prices based on that paid for legal tender work, which is printed from piates of fourteen by nine inches, iuis secisive action on tne part of the printers of tie Nauvnal Bank Note Company caused naturally some commotion among their brotuer printers in the American Bank Note Company, The men who led the movement which brought on a sirike m the National Company bad buc .a short time ago, on - closiug Of the government works in Washingto cone to New York. to Work. The route taken by the procession was down the Bowery, along Cana) street, then up Broadway, round Union square and by Fourth avenue to Cooper Insti- tute and Sixth street, and from thence to avenue A and Second street, finishing the line of march at Cooper Institute, where an enormous relay of horse cars awaited the pleasure seekers and conveyed them to Jones’ Wood. This statement May seem somewhat strange when the score shows ‘that the champions won by & score of more than ‘The assertion is made on the ground of the batting and with the “if had all the chances Offered been taken by the fielders. The batting score shows that the young Orientals did more safe batting than the champions and yet were defeated, champions foolishly imagined that they had a “sure thing,” and, therefore, the full nine was not on These “sure things” in base ball are danger- ous things to trust. How the absentees would open their eyes if they should near that the score of whe game was 10to7, with the “secona class’ club in the van. The Orientals, although playing very nicely at the start, with two or three exceptions, Seemed to have an idea that they could not win the game, and tat they were expected best they could to keep down the score, acted to their detriment, and had gone into the game with the determination to win, “and worked as they afterwards showed they could, the Eckfords should not have scored arun before she fifth inning, while the Orientals were entitied to ail they had scored, on account of their batting. When they found themselves taking the lead they became somewhat exciied, and this acted as badly on some as did the first idea of no chance to win.” In this was shown the great fault under which tney labored—want of confidence, Their batting was gooa, first class, a8 the score will show; their outflelding at left and centre could scarcely be and their inflelding with the excep- ase aud short, Was all that any club could desire.
