FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Taurspay, July 15—6 P.M. ‘Tue Money market was quict and steady at seven percent. The demand was moderately active, but ‘was fully met at the legal rate; no exceptions above or below this figure were reported, though it 13 probabie that a few loans on government collateral to prime houses were made at six per cent. Com- mercial paper was dull, wiilt the discounting rate ranging trom nine to twelve per cent. Much uneast- ness was felc at renewed reports that warrants of arrest had been issued for those implicated in the Tecent usurious operations. Foreign exchange was maintained at drm rates, and at an advance of an eighth per cent for sixty day sterling, owing to the easier condicion of the London money market. Tie range of rates was as follows:—Sterling, sixty days, commer- cial, 109!¢ a 109%; good to prime bankers’, 1097¢ @ 104; short sight, 110% a 110%; Paris, sixty days, 5.18% @ 5.124; short sight, 5.12); @ 5.10% Aatwerp, 5.1834 @ 5.12'¢; Switzerland, 5.183¢ @ 5. Hamburg, 353% @ 36; Amsterdam, 405, @ 40%; ‘Wrankfort, 4034 a 4034; Bremen, 73}¢ @ 7934; Prus- Bian thalers, 703% @ 71/4. The anticipation of the government purchase for the sinking fund as well as the reduction of the Bank of England rate of discount produced a strong market for government bonds at the opening, and ‘the 67's sold as high as 120%. The large amount offered at the Sub-Treasury led to a weaker feeling later in the day, but the advance in London to 824 checked the decline, and the market closed steady at the following street quotations:—United States sixes, 1881, registered, 120); a 121; do, do., coupon, ‘120% a 121; do., dve-twenties, registered, 121% a 122; do. do., coupon, 1862, 124% a 124; do. do., cou- ‘pon, 1864, 121% a@ 122; do. do., coupon, 1865, 121% a 122; do, do., coupon, new, 1865, 12054 a 12094; do. do., coupon, 1867, 12034 a 120%; do. do., coupon, 1868, 12054 a 12034; do. ten-forties, registered, 109% a 110; ao, do. coupon, 1104 a 110g; currency bonds, 1075; a + 107%. ‘The proposals of bonds for sale to the government at the Sub-Treasury to-day embraced a total of $6,333,000, The lots accepted were as follows, at the prices specified:—g40,000, 1867, coupon, 120,20; $250,000, 1867, coupon, 120.17; $250,000, 1867, coupon, 120,18; $250,000, 1867, 120.19; $160,000, 1865, coupon, 220.20; $50,000, 1865, coupon, 120,20. {n Southern securities new North Carolinas were ‘heavy and lower, while the new Tennessees and the general list were steady. The closing prices at the Stock Exchange were:—Tennessees, ex coupon, 62% & 623{; do., new, 564, a 56%; Virginias, ex coupon, 57.8 58; do., new, 61 a 62; Georgia sixes, $2 @ 83%; do. sevens, 91 a 92%; North Carolina, ex Coupon, 5835 & 5834; do., new, 48 a 4844; South Carolina sixes, new, 664; a 67; Missouri sixes, 873% 2 88; do. St. Josephs, 8935 a 90; Louisiana sixes, 681,; do., levee sixes, 66%; do. do. eights, 85; Alabama eights, 9854 a 94, The gold market was heavy and weak in response ‘to the reduction of the Bank of England rate of discount to three per cent and the improvement in five-twenties at London. The price slowly declined, ‘without excitement, to 13634, from which it reactea @ fraction at the close. The Hansa for Europe took ‘Out $520,000, and the Eagle for Cuba $20,000 in specie, The disbursements of coin interest amounted to $632,242, The course of the market ‘was as follows:— 10A.M, 20:16 4M. a oe M. y b Cash gold was in good supply. Loans for carrying ‘were made at seven to eight per cent, and excep- tionally atl. $2. ‘rhe following ts the report of the Goi Exclange Bank:— Gold cleared... Gold baiances. 2,158,089 Currency balances. on 3,005,197 In stocks the features were a rise to 213% for New York Central, 1843{ for Hudson River and 133 for Hannibal and St. Joseph. The two “Vanderbilt stocks” have peen advanced to the above unpre- cedented figures by anticipations of immense scrip dividends to result from their consolidation as one dine and the enlargement of the combined stock to $100,000,000. The secret of the exact amount to be declared on each as the preliminary to this union dies with the respective directors; but the activity of Hudson River is due in great part to a belief that ats capital «will at least be doubled. When the plans are thoroughly arranged and the auarket value of the respective stocks pushed to extreme prices the street will be allowed to pur: chase ad libitwm, after which the usual stories of a dess costly paraliel through line to Chicago will ve ‘brought into play again and the market worked down. Indeed, should the scheme of a consolidated ‘Vanderbilt road between New York and Chicago be consummated, with a capital of one hundred ana fifty millions as proposed, it will doubtiess lead to the organization of a new company, for a new road @ capable of being built for seventy-five. mulllions, and would, therefore, be a formidable com- petitor for the through business of the two cities, ‘These prices led to a rush to cover on the part of the “shorts,” after whose purchages the market became heavy and declined, Central yield- ang to 20014 and Hudson River to 1805s. Hannibal and St, Joseph is in the hands of a party who pos- sess the power to do with if as they please. Legiti- nately there are expectations of appreciation from ‘the sales of the lands adjoining and belonging to the Toad, but whether the present buyers wili be al- dowed the advantages of this fact lies witn the #peculating cliques controlling the stock. Should a suiictently large “short” mterest be induced the wales would doubtless be made. In the same way, as to New York Central and Hudson River, it 13 very Probable that so profitable an influence as the con- $47,071,000 #oltdation pian will not be hurried through, Dut retained to ‘milk the street” until the {atest moment. The stocks enumerated had the market to themselves, for the rest of the list ‘was dull and steady. Inthe expresses there wasa further yielding in Wells-Fargo, which sold down to21. The closing prices at the last call of the Stock Exchange were:—Canton, 62%; Cumberland, Bl a 34; Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express, 2143 a 21%; Adams Express, 5934 a 59'4; American Express, 42 H 4255; United States Express, 70', a 7214; Quick- allver, 154 a 16; Pacific Mail, 8614 a 865;; Weatern ‘Wnion Telegraph, 87% @ 874; New York Central, 210 8 210%; Mariposa, §\4 a 9; do. preferred, 14 a 15. do, certificates, 40 a 46; Hudson River, 181\¢ a 1815,; Harlem, 146; do. preferred, 145; Reading, 9495 a 9444; Alton and Terre Haute, 34 bid; do: preferred, 0; Toledo and Wabash, 761 a 76%; do. preferred, 62; Milwaukee and St. Paul, 77% a78; do. pre- erred, 873; a 88; Columbus, Cleveland and Cincin- matt, 77; Ohio and Mississippi, 32), a 324; Fort ‘Wayne, 151% 2164; Michigan Central, 1323g a 133; ‘Michigan Southern, 107'; a 107%; Hlinois Central, 144 Did; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 109 a 109%; Chi- cago and Alton, 160 a 160%; Rock Island, 117% a ‘Ji7%; Northwestern, 8134 a $1'4; do, preferred, 94% 95; Delaware and Lackawanna, 110%; a 112; New Jersey Central, 101}, a 102; Morris and Essex, 89; ‘Hannibal and St. Joseph, 129 a 131; do, preterred, 127 4 129; Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central, 37 a BTM.
