Messre, H#RRING & CO., 951 Broadway :— b GENTLEMEN—You have ady been well formed through the columns of the Pally papers of the desitrate at- tempt made upon onr money vault and the fire burger proof safe made by you for eur bank afew years ago. lthough our vault waa very strongly built and provide: ih heavy doors and the best of locks, the attempt upon the wult was successful. ‘The rogues succeeded in ndermining the vault by digging tunnel some seventy feet long under the adjoining juiluing, and terminating atthe base of the vault itself. Fire they. commenced their operations upon a large scale, ad, after removing the front part of the heavy stone foundatim, which was strongly laid in cement, they reached the largeliagstone which formed the floor of the vault. This stone ws broken by means of a jack-screw of great power, and the lierior of e vault thus reached, joint of attak; and Your safe now became the great bravely did it resist every effort, holding secure {4 entire trust (property amounting to $500,000) against allbe tools and ingenuity of the burglars. ‘The irst great aim seemed to be to drill into thetafe; but, although some thirty holes were made in the oulr casing the hardened fron forming the centre lining turnes the point of every tool. Disappointed here, they now atempted to dissect the safe, aud endeavored to force the strmg frame- work apart. After removing one bar and partidly cutting off another they gave. this up; and all further pperations proved unavaiiing.
