NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1869.—TRIPLE SHENT. b) and Northwestern Ratiroad Company during the third week tn June:— 1869... The stock market to-day gave indications that it is on the eve of another important movement, but in which direction remains @ probiem, It seemed to be the popular impression that with the purchase of nearly three millions of bonds by the government during the current week and with the change in the Policy of gold sales, which is to be instituted after the Ist of July the end of extreme rates for money has been seen, at least until the usual fall activity sets in. This feeling was so strong that it led to a decided revival of the ‘bull’? specu- lation, and prices were carried up from one to six per cent for tne railways and correspondingly for the miscellaneous list, Some of the best prices were paid during the most stringent period of the money market, but the ac- tivity of the latter continued to so late an hour that some of the list were inclined to yield ana did fall of fractionally. On the other hand the “beara” were free sellers, or the enthusiasm of the hour might have lifted the market still higher. They ominously shake their heads and maintain in de- fence of their course that the Secretary of the Trea- sury has already done the mischief, and that without the restoration of Lis thirty million currency balance to general circulation there cannot be an easy money market. The object of their attack seemed more par- ticularly to be Rock Island and Michigan Southern. ‘The Vanderoilt stocks were the most buoyant, Hud- son River selling as high ag 164, although It subse- quently reacted to 16234, and New York Central ad- vancing to 191}g. The St. Paul stocks were also firmer and higher. Fort Wayne rose to 157 in anti- cipation of the result of the stockholders’ meeting at Pittsburg to-morrow, when the question will be de- cided whether the twelve per cent guaranteed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company shail be received at the rate of six per cent upon twice the present stock or severy per cent upon 171 3-7 per cent or eight per cent upon 150 per cent of the capital. The excep- tion again to the general buoyancy was Pacific Maul, which sold as low as 85. The following were the closing prices on the call at the last session of the Stock Exchange:—Cumberland, 32% bid; Wells, Fargo & Co.’s Express, 303, a 30%; American Ex- press, 40'¢ a 405; Adams Express, 61 bid; United States Express, 69/4 bid; Merchants’ Unton Express, 1534 & 1534; Quicksilver, 15 a 153; Canton, 6134 a 63; Mariposa, 814 a 10; do. preferred, 1634 a 17; do, cer- tificates, 42a 48; Pacific Mail, 85% a 86; Western Union Telegraph, 3834 @ 3834; New York Central, 190'4 a 19044; Hudson River, 1605, a 160%; Harlem, 143 bid; Reading, 9834 a 9845; Chicago and Alton, 157; do. preferred, 155 bid; Wabash, 7134 @ 72; Milwaukee and St. Pani, 74 @ 74'¢; do. preferred, 853; a 854,; Fort Wayne, 15614 a 1563; Ohio and Mississippi, 325¢ 32%; Michigan Central, 132 a 133; Michigan South- ern, 10634 @ 106%; Illinois Central, 141 a 144; Pitts- burg, 97% a 9776; Rock Island, 11644 @1163g; North- western, 7874 a 79; do. preferred, 94% a 949; Boston Water Power, 15% a 17; New Jersey Central, 1064 @ 106%; Hannibal ana St. Joseph, 120 bid; do. pre- ferred. 11914 a 120; Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central, 40 a 4034; moras and Hatex, 8945 wid, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wepnespay, June 23—6 P, M, The inquiry for money began at an unusually early hour to-day, the first engagements being made be. fore eleven o’clock, The change which subsequently Occurred, taken in connection with the fact that a decided revival of the ‘bullish’ feeling in stocks was brought about later in the day, induces the in- ference that it was the final effort of the Shylocks to wring extreme rates from the street. They were aware that the government purchase of bonds would turn nearly two millions of money upon the market late in the day, and hence the necessity for giving it the appearance of activity. The rate at this early hour was as high as one-eighth per cent per day, equivalent to forty-five per ceot perannum, High rates were maintained up to a quarter to three o'clock, when the extreme was a sixteenth and in- terest, At five minutes to three a audden collapse took place and one round lot of half a million dollars was oMered at seven per cent currency. It waa evident that those who had sold bonds to the govern- ment at noon were anxious to employ their money at some rate of interest over night, A telegram from Washington states that the 1st of July statement will show a decrease of six millions im the public debt, The receipts for the fiscal year ending June 30 will exceed the expenditures about $33,000,000, General Daniel Butterfe!a has been appointed Assistant Treasurer in place of Mr. H. H. Van Dyck, ‘who tendered his resignation afew months since, but discharged the duties of the position up to the Present time in compliance with a request from Seoretary Boutwell. General Butterfield, as an old New Yorker and @ business man of long experience here, will be @ valuable assistant to Mr. Boutwell in suggestions affecting the interests of the city. Governments responded to the extreme rates for money, and the market at the noon seasion of the board was heavy under the additional depreasing induences of a@ yieid in the price at London and the lower price for gold. The 62’s sold down to 122 and the 67’s to 1193. Few bonds were offering, and bidders were unable to make the market weak. The market is inan uncertain state and buy- 5054 ers are as indifferent as drawers. There is hardly any Es disposition to discount the effect of the payment of bo the July coupons held in Kurope. Should the foreign demand for our five-twenties prove inactive in the interval to the beginning of next month the remit- tances for the coupons will probably have to be made in bills. Should the demand continue the in- terest will go back in the form of more bonds. The one cause counterbalances the other, however. In May large shipments of bonds were made instead of bill. The fact that the interest 1s 80 promptly paid keepa alive the foreign investment demand. An- other fact has been made manifest within the past few days. Some of the imported goods stored in bond are going back to Europe. ‘The steamer on Saturday is to take out some French goods which could not be marketed. We have heavily imported this spring, according to the figures of the bonded warehouse, but large quanti- ties came here on commission. There appears to be a limit even to extravagance, and it isto be hoped it has been reached this season. The question arises, to what extent wiil our imports be arrested? It 1s not supposable that any very large amount of those now here will be sent back, but the merchants who deal to foreign goods will prefer working off what is already here to ordering fresh supplies. It will be curious to watch this new influence upon the course of foreign exchange. Prime bankers’ sterling to-day was worth 109% a 109% for sixty day and 110\ a 110% for sight bills. The gold market was unusually steady, the ex- treme range recorded in the Goid Room being from 137 to 137%. One small sale took place at 13744. As we before remarked, the move- ment is largely speculative, and this will account for the activity of the market at this proverbially dull The demand is based upon the buoyancy of the cotton market here and abroad and the continued upward tendency of prices of that As we have before stated, goods which have been selling at the prices lately current could not be replaced except at high prices; and this assertion is being borne out by the receipt of fresh consign- ments from the manufactories, all of which are held at higher Ngures than old goods are even now sell- ing for, and these are decidedly higher than those lately current, the discrepancies in some cases amounting to two and three cents per yard. from prevailing indications it will probably not be long before the new consignments will be taken at The old stocks are rapiaiy diminishing, and of course cannot be augmented, in view of which the new consignments will be brought on the market with a good promise of selling at re- The cotton market will in all likelinood continue to control for fabrics, and the fluctuations of cotton at home and abroad will therefore reflect the values of cotton goods in a marked degree.
