FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarurpay, June 19—6 P. M. The weekly bank statement 1s indicative of a Strong contractionary effort in response to the with- drawal of currency from general circulation, The totale of the present exhibit show a decrease tn loans of nearly seven miluons—which 1s further reflected in a correspondingly large falling off in the deposits. ‘The lose in legal tenders is about @ million and @ quarter of dollars, and a8 a portion of this is known to have consisted of three per ceuts, the actual loss 4n greenbacks 1s comparatively small. Thecurrency shipped westward must, therefore, have gone in national notes, toa greatextent, The totals of the ast two statements are as follows:— June 19. Loans $265,341,008 Specie. 19,025,444 Circulation.., 34,198,829 Deposits: 186,244,110 49,612,488 ‘The loss in deposits is so large as compared with the decrease in specie and legal tenders that the banks, while losing actual reserve, gain in the excess above the twenty-five per cent reserve required by law. The gain as compared with last week amounts to over six hundred thousand dollars. The change in the item of specie is insignificant, but shows that the customs demand for gold has absorbed more of the precious metal than was disbursed by the Sub- Treasury. The following are the diiferences:— Decronse in loans.. $6,641,820 pec! 28,136 nerease in circulatio: 54,039 in deposits... 7,642,795 Decrease in legal tenders, 1,246,770 The money market was again active, but 1s be- ginning to show the results of the drain to this point of currency from the country and neighbortng cities. The effect upon the latter bas been to arrest the usual enterprises in progress at this season and to cause an advance in their local money rates, which will in turn retract money again. The figure tapered down as three o’clock approached from 1-16 and in- terest—equtvalent to thirty per cent—to seven per cent, large balances being offered at the latter rate for the two days’ interest to Monday. The currency balance in the Sub-Treasury in this city was $17,205,000 at the close of business last evening, against $15,829,000 the day before. This makes a total of about $30, 000,000 currency now in the vaults of the government. The government market was, heavy, lower and dull, the weakness being most perceptible in the 62's, which fell off to 121%. The activity of the money market and the decline in gold have been the chief reason for the decline, but the firmness with which home quotations have been sustained in spite of the fall in gold leaves no margin for export, if, indeea, it do not permit a small percentage in shipments this ‘way. Heace in the prices made to day the yielding ‘was greater in the ’62’s which are so extensively dealt in at home and abroad. The foreign price came 80% 80%. The gold market exhibited a continuation of the features which have characterized operations during the past week. The activity of the money market early in the day caused a decline to 136%, which is the lowest point gold has touched in a good whfie. In fact, the market has lately drifted into a condition very analogous to that of the stock market. Gold now rises and falis conversely to the interest rate just a3 stocks do, Itis no longer the repre- sentative of money. It is a value in itself. It is a commodity bought and sold like any merchandise, Hence it moves with the genera! market for stocks, railway bouds and the like. It is “carried” just as stocks are carried, and it is so abundant in supply just now that its exact equivalent in greenbacks commands extravagant rates of interest. The fol- lowing shows the course of the market:— ‘The rate for carrying cash gold fluctuated with the Money market, and ranged from 5.64 down to 7 per cent, ‘The disbursements of coin interest to-day ‘amounted to $42,985 74. The following is the report of the Gold Exchange Bank: Gold cleared... $94,739,000 Gold balance « 2,199,816 Currency balan 8,001,939 Commercial paper was inactive, and rates re- mained unquotable. Foreign exchange was steady on the basis of 109% for long and 110% for short prime bankers’ sterling. ‘The stock market opened weak, and under a strong pressure from the “bears” underwent a sharp de- Cline, Northwestern common leading, to 76}, and New York Central to 184%. The feeling was semi- panicky for a short time, espectally as the “break”? extended over the general list, St. Paul falling to 70%, Rock Island to 1153s, New Jersey Central to 10354,\Paciile Mail to 8634, and Western Union to 39%. Hudson River was steady at 15544 a 15534. A better feeling ensued under the effort to “cover,” and the market rallied at the last board, but broke down again just before the bank statement, re- covering sharply at the close. The following were the closing prices at the last board:— Canton, 61% a 62; Boston Water Power, 164 16%; Cumperland, 3234 @ 3434; Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Ex- press, 30% a 31; Adams Express, 50 bid; American Express, 40 @ 40%; United States Express, 603% 970; Merchants’ Union Express, 154% @ 1534; Quick- silver, 14 a 16; Paolflc Mail, 8734 @ 87%; Western Vnton Telegraph, 303% a 3054; New York Central, 185% @ 1855,; Mariposa, 6a 10; do, preferred, 1654 a 17; Harlem, 144 bid; do. preferred, 142 bid; Read- ing, 96% a 907%; Alton and Terre Haute, preferred, 65 a 60; Chicago and Alton, 161 bid; Toledo and Wa bash, 67% @ 68; do, preferred, 80 a 80)4; Milwau- kee and St. Paul, 70% #71; do. preferred, 814 a 82; Ohié and Mississippi, 82a 9244; Fort Wayne, 152%) a 162%; Michigan Central, 130 bid; Michigan Southern, 102% a 103; Ulinols Central, 142 bid; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 02% ; Rock Island, 115% @ 116%; Northwestern, 7744 @ 78; do. preferred, 95% a 9314; New Jersey Central, 104 a 104%; Hannibai and St. Joseph, 118 a 121; do. preferred, 118 a 120. ‘The earning of the principal railways for the ex- Pired five months of 1869, a8 contrasted with the earnings for the same period in 1868are given in the following table. Miller, yes- terday, was poorly ‘attended, although it is under- stood that inducements offered in the form of free tickets from the city were furnished un- sparingly. These latter were doubiless used, but it is safe to state that fully one- half of the holders visited the country intent on other matters than those pertaining to real estate, Alter waiting in vain for some time in the hope of Witnessing an increase in the number of purchasers on the grounds, the auctioneer proceeded with the sale, and, in the absence of ai spirited competi- ag knocked down 2i0 acres of the property to L. mavenport, of New Rochelle, at $400 per acre.
