8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, May 31—6 P. M. ‘rhe interest of Wall street again centred in the stock market, where the “pnlls,” following up their victory of Saturday, made the defeat of their oppo- ments a perfect rout to-day. The features prominent ap the operations of the day were Michigan South- ern, Pittsburg, St. Paul and Reading. The first men- Qioned stock opened at the closing price of Saturday night, and advanced rather sharply to 119 This rise calied out sellers, and there was a reaction to 317%. The fact having been made manifest that the Injunction asked for jast week, and which was held ‘threateningly over the market, was simply a ‘‘bear” rase, the amount of guaranteed stock being less than six hundred thousand dollars, there was a steady re- covery, and the price, amid considerable excitement, advanced to 119%. The Long Room and the street were again rife with (he ramors of a large serip divi- dend, as wel! of an expected vote at the election in June in favor of & Vanderbilt direction. Lake Shore followed in the wake of Michigan Southern and Rept close upon its figures. The success of the Pena- sylvapia Central In obtaining control of the Fort Wayne route has, doubtiess, stimulated unusual efforts on the part of the Vanderbilt party to get control of the rival connecting road to Chicage. Next in pomt of interest and absorbing universal attention, just as the Long Room was about to close, came Pittsburg, which, after a period of ac- tivity that carried it up to 98, suddenly rese tw 108 It seems the stock has been slowly cornered by a prominent clique, who took the opportunity of a dull moment In the mar- ket to suddenly “jump” the quotation, A scrip dividend was also talked of. Itis doubiful If one- half the sales made in the upward movement from 100 to 108 were geuuine, But they were suficient 10 frighten some of the ‘'shorts’’ into covering, who, in their exeitement, could not tell ‘‘wash’’ from a Jegitimate transaction. This figure brought out sellers also, and there was a relapse to 105), which was about the average price in the closing street prices, The St, Paul shares were also active, the common going over 79 and the preferred touching #1. Reading, which has so Jong paused at the fractions just under par, mustered strength to-day, and, by @ new effort, rose to 3004. Such were the movements of the moet active stocks, the rest sympathizing more or m. Harlem rose to 1614. Fort Wayne mm the miscellaneous list the feature iiver, which dropped to 1445 upon the proposition of the company to issue @ million of new bonds bearing seven, per cent gold interest. The express stocks were weak for Wells-Fargo and Adams, but steady for the others. Pacife Mail was Irregular between $1 and 8134. The events of the day show that the cliques which were inclined a few ays since to check and turn the market have found it impossible to swim against the popular tide, and, ‘therefore, have turned round and joined their ‘bull’? confréres once more. It seems impossible to arrest the upward tendency of prices in the Stock Exchange. The speculative fever which took Pessession of the public mind at the end of the Winter has not abated, It has carried up values of the raflway list in particular, aad the cliques, un- abie to atem the current, are aiding the upward Movement, Wall street is bullish, with few excep- tions. The government market was very animated and ‘the transactions heavy, the facts pointing to a re- ‘vival of “bull”? speculation in this branch also. Not Jess than six to eight million dollars’ worth of bonds changed hands to-day, withtn a radius of two blocks from Wall and Broad streets. The market was ‘Stimulated by the sudden rise in London to 90%) from 79%, the closing price on Saturday. The better feeling abroad was due to the receipt by mail of the Intelligence tnat Secretary Boutwell had bought the bonds for the Sinking Fund and would not Felsane them under any circumstances. Reports ‘Were current that Minister Motley had arrived in England and made a speech of a satisfactory charac- ten. The decline in gold tended to offset somewhat ‘the effect of this rise abroad; but when gold had touched the lowest of the day and evinced a dispo- Sitton to be firm, if not to react, bonds became Strong at the following qnotations:—United States sixes, 1881, registered, 12134 4122; do., coupon, 122 ‘® 122%; do. five-twenties, registered, 117 a 117';; @o. do, conpon, 1862, 122% a 122%; do. do., cou- pon, 1964, 11734 a 1174; do. do, coupon, 1865, 11874 ® 119; do. do., coupon, 1865, new, 120 a 1204; do. do., coupon, 1867, 120 a 12034; do. do., coupon, 1667, 120 a 1205; United States fives, ten-forties, Tegistered, 108% a 109; do. do., coupon, H's a 1005; currency bonds, 10714 a 107%. The money market was a shade easier, hut while whe rate on call loans was almost universally six per cent on governments the activity of the stock market rendered it a matter of no dificuity to get eeven where the pledge consisted of miscellaneous securities, Commercial paper was fairly active at seven to eight and nine per cent. Foreign exchange was firmer, the leading @rawers advancing their ratea in expectation ofa better demand arising out of the deciine in gold.
