FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, May 17-6 P, M. Wall street had a first class sensation to-day in the failure of a prominent firm for asum variously re- Ported between a million and a million and a half of dollars, The suspension really took place at a late hour on Saturday afternoon, but was not made pub- Me and was not known beyond a few of the creditors “short” of gold to the extent of about eight millions of dollars, and that they were really bankrupt a few weeks since, but made a doubly large new venture ‘with the hope of retrieving their il) fortune. Gold, however, continued to advance, and thus plunged them only the deeper in disaster, The street is full of all sorts of rumors with reference to the character of their operations. It ts said tnat they abandoned their original legitmate buaness of a commission house and gradually expanded into transactions in gold, governments and stocks, In their fal they have implicated several other firms, and Exchange place was in @ state of the greatest eommotion all day. So faras nas been ascertained at tne close of business to-night only one small firm 48 60 embarrassed as to be compelied to suspend. ‘The others have been able to meet their liabilities promptly. When the first signs of distress were ap- parent on Saturday afternoon the popularity of the firm was such that their frends tendered them about half a million dollars to help them resume, but they deciined, on the ground that their Mabilities ‘Would require a sum at least twice as large. A meet- Ang of the creditors was held on Sunday, but no reme- dy was found to stay the bursting of the storm this morning. One of the sad features of the failure is the heavy individual loss which it has entailed upon a broker in government bouds—a personal friend of the firm—who, im his trust of their solvency, sent thom at their request his cheek for seventy thousand dollars just at the close of bank hours on Saturday. ‘heir own check for a similar amount, which he had deposited carly in the day, was returned “not good” the exame afternoon, His total loss is said to be about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. He promptly met ail claims to-day and went on as ‘avual, But, as he intended reuring from business on the lst of Jane, and giving up the “street” for a miore quiet life, much commiseration is teit for him and much indignation expressed towards the firm Who thus so crueliy used a friend. ‘The effect of the fuilure was witnessed in the fluctuations of the dif- ferent markeis. Before the regular opening of the gold board there ‘was great excitement, under the mupression that the “buying in” of the “short” gold of the suspended firm would create a large rtse, and the price ad- ‘vanced to 14235. From this point, however, there Was a faliing “oit? to 140%, under sales of “long” gold held by parties who bought at much lower Dzures and were willing to realize. The price again returned to 1414, at which it was quite steady until very late in th: afternoon, when it suddenly ad- vanced to 142, closing finally at 142/4. The “short? Mnterest is now very small in the market and the bullish feeling quite general. Loans of cash gold Ww-day were made at from seven te four per cent for carrying, in the forenoon, ‘Tuere was more activity in the afternoon and some loans were made “Mat.” @& follows:— ‘The range in tue price was The operations ot the Gold E: fo lows:— Gold cleared Gold balance Currency baiar The disbursements of coin interest to-day were $211,299, jovernments opened with great firmness as a re- sult of the advance in gold, Lut became less steady and were inclined to droop at the close, uirongh apprehensions of the effect of the failure on the for- eign market, The day being Whit Monday and a European holiday there were no quotations from London or #rankfort. Tue higher price of gold will, Kt is expected, act unfavorably on the price of ponds 4n the foreign market, while no little uneasiness pre- Vuils as to the extent of the bills drawn by the sus- pended Louse. H they have confined themselves to ‘the limit of the articles which in their capacity of a commission firm they have shipped to Kurope there will be no difficulty; but the street Was full of rumors on this point as well ‘@s on everybody else connected with them. It Is fortunate that the day was a holiday in London. Had the news of the failure gone over early this morning, it might have produced a panic in Ameri- can securities, if not inthe general market. But as the matter closes more hopefully to-night and the ‘losses have not produced a panic here, the effect will ‘be toned down at the opening of business to-morrow ‘an the foreign market. Foreign exchange was inactive but firm, on the ‘Dusis of 10944 for private baukers’ sixty days ster. Jing. ‘The excitement of the failure produced some scru- tiny of borrowers’ names and co.laterals in the ear- ier portion of the day, and money was active at seven per cent; but the apprehension wore away, aud loans were again made quite freely at six to seven per cent before the close of banking hours. ‘The stock market was most sensitive, after gold, in reflecting the uneasy feeling arising out of the oo- currence, In the early forenoon there was a rush to well, ana stocka were thrown upon tbe market in a manner strougiy suggestive for a few minutes of @ panic, In this furry and excitement New York Central declined to 1909;, Hudson River 154%, Reading to 9554, Michigan Southern to 10534, Pittsburg to 92%, Northwestern to 90%, Northwest- ern preferred to 10134, Rock Island to 125, Fort ‘Wayne to 1534, St. Paul to 77, St. Paul preferred to 86%, Western Union to 434%, Wabasy to 744; and Pacifico Matl to%44.
