10 CIAL AND COMMERCIAL. FINAN WEDNESDAY, April 28—6 P. M, "rhe stock market was aguin excited to-day for the shares which have been (be promtnent features dur- ing the past few weeks and for one which is com- paratively fresh im the speculative fever, At the first morning board 10,000 shares of Michigan South- ern were sold by a well known stock house, and the dealings of the day in this stock were hardly less tap thirty thousand shares, The price under sre sales declined from 101 to 9934, but reacted jater in the day to 1024, amid considerable exckement. 1t is said that the Michigan Southern Company, bY an old reso.ution, were empowered to Convert and sel) $2,000,000 of their convertible bonds when the stock should touch par. This yalue was reached yesterday, and by some it is thought that the first sales were made as a “short”? speculation, but later le impression gained a foothold that the stock house referred to were prcrely the agents of ihe com- pany in placing the uew stock on the market. Juas- much as the total amount of Habilities of the corpo- ration 1s Rot changed by the conversion of the bonds, the reaction in price towards the close is more ciearly understood. Indeed, as the bonds have borne a fixed annual rate of interest and were a first Hen upon the road their conversion leaves the amount of two millions subject to receive such rate of interest as the earnings will allow. Hence the addition to the capital stock is apparent only, Which again accounts for the upward turn in the price of stock. New York Central was also ex- cited and irregular, selling in the early forenoon as high as 17534, ana thence almost immediately drop- ping to 1737;. Hudson River went up to 156 and Hariem to 148, but reacted with Central—all three becoming heavy under the pressure of sales sup- posed to be based on news of unfavorable legislation at Albany. . Erie was pante-stricken at the National Board, and dropped to recovered late in the day to 327%. The Northwestern stocks were firmer and higher, the common touching 867§ and the preferred 987 The other railways were irreguiar or heavy, while the business of the me after the morning regular board was dull, The express stocks were variable, Wells- Fargo touching 287 and United States declining to 62%, ex-dividend. Pacific Mail was “of? and comparatively negiected, while Mariposa Was weak and lower. Westera Union yielded to 425s, but recovered to 4 A continuance of the influences which have been already commented npon preserved the strength of the foreign exchanges. In the afternoon the relax- ation in’ the rates for cash gold caused a further advance, and the prime bankers put up their quota- tion to 10944 for sixty days sterling. The following Was the range of quotations at the close:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 1081{ a 108%; good to prime bankers’, 10875 a 109%¢; short sight, 1093; a 109; Paris, sixty days, 5.223; a 5.17}g; short sight, 5.1743 45.15; Antwerp, 5.223 @ 5.1744; Switzerland, 5.22}; @5.1734; Hamburg, 35:; a 357%; Amsterdam, 897% a 403%; Frankfort, 40% a 40%; Bremen, 785s; Prussian thalers, 703g @ 714. Govercments were firmer and an eighth to a quar- ter per centhigher. The market seems to disregard the foreign quotations, which to-day declined to 50} at London, railying subsequently to 80%. The for eign bankers are buying in spite of the fact, und are probably basing thelr calculations upon the advance 10 93% a 93% for consols, which indicates a very easy money market in London, the signal for a re- bewal of speculation there tn our securities. The €2's were 1213, bid, and the 67's sold at 11614. In the afternoon @ stock house supposed to be carry- ing outa ‘bear’ order sold heavily and put the price of the latter temporarily down to 115%, but ‘with the withdrawal of their efforts the whole list recovered again, and prices closed as follows at five o'clock this evening:—United States sixes, 1881, registered, 118 a 11834; do., coupon, 118% & 118%; do. five-twenties, registered, 2% a 112%; do. do., coupon, 18 121%; do. do, coupon, 1864, 117 do, do., coupon, 1845, do, do., coupon, new, 1865, 116 a 116 coupon, 18967, 116 a 11634; do, do., coupon, 1865, 116 a 116%; do., ten-for- ties, registered, 107 a 107%; do. do., coupon, 107% ® 107%; currency bonds, 1053, a 105%. Country banks are generally better off than our city banks, and are taking good bankable names at 744 and 8, Some of the city banks make a very poor show in answer to the last call of the Comptroller va their reserves, and will require to be put on the retired list, as far as discounts are concerned, for a week or two to bring up. The weekly state- ment of the banks, as returned to the Clearing House April 26, looks more favorable.
