There is likely to be another ten days’ excitement at the Central Office, growing out of serious comp!i- cations in the Fire Marshai’s office. Upon the estab- lishment of the Bureau Mr. Brackett, without con- sulting the Board of Police Commissioners, whose auty it is to establish rules for its management, ordered that its attaches should be on guty from nine A. M. until five P, M. A few days ago Mx. Brackett preferred charges before the Board against the democratic Prk for ab- senting himself from the office before five o’clock, and asked for an investigation. ‘The Board, believing that it is their. province to presc the honrs of duty have so far declined to yield to the ‘ire Marshal's requ He bas, it 1s understood, also made verbal ¢ e8 aguinst the republican clerk of an equally friviious nature, for n which the Board deciune to place him on trial. The Board are satistied that the elerks an three detatied po en in the ofice, perform the greater part of the work, and itis probable that so far from pieas- ing the parties against whom c are made on trial, & ching investigation will be made as to the manner in which the business of this expensive bureau has been administere It 1s said that the imsurance compa- nies have taken the inittatory towards securing a repeal of the law creating it. Since the avlishment of the office in y, 1865, there have been four con- victions of incendiaries, one of which was in Brooklyn. ° THE TWITCHELL AND EATON TRAGEDIES. New Developments in the Twitchell Case—No Intercession in His Behalf by Elis Wile=Ex- traordinary Conduct of Two durors—Eaton’s Death to be Avenged. {Harrisburg (April 9) correspondence Philadelphia evening ‘telegraph.) Several facts of interest have transpired in refer- enge to the Eaton and Twitchell tragedies. It ts fonnd inquiry that Mrs. Twitchell had never sai or written @ word to Governor Geary in behalf of her husband, On ove occasion a closely-velied woman called at the Executive Department and obtained an interview in company with a female frend. ‘The iriend spoke a few sentences in fayor of ‘Twitchell, but the velied Woman, Who was aiverwards repre- sented to have been Mrs. Twitchell, remained both veiled and silent during the short mterview. The only appeal made by Twitchell to the Goveruor was tue foulowing:— PRISON, March 99, 1869, jovernor of Pennsyivania:— to appear before the bar of God, tection of avciety the majesty of t be sittained, yet it does seem very at I must auiler for a crime’ which I know nothing T would ask that, if you might not deem it incons! ficial duty, you will gi e # little time bi ing this dread sentence, for I fei that Providence ome new light on this awful deed by which teut with your o fore execii may’ be enabled to prove to the world my entire innocence of it. “Ho; that you may not deem this request intr el ain, air very respectfully, GEORGE 8. TWITCHELL, Jk. The letters sent to the Governor in behalf of Twitchell were from the utmost variety of sources, Some were sentimental, some legal, and quite a number gave the history of cases im which innocent men had been hung on circumstantial evidence, Among the persons who visited the Governor on behalf of Twitchell was Altgelt, the witness who swore that he saw two mea leave the scene of the murder, Anaunt of Twitchell was also at darris- burg. Not the least singular feature of the mat- er was the conduct of Gibersou aud Dyke, two hf the jurors who convicted the accused. Hyarr, Eaq. i DRAB SIR—I feel ita duty both to yourself and also ti othera who may be alllicted with that distressing dixease, chronic rheumatism, to add my testimony in favor of tha truly valuable medicine, the Life Balsam. For years I wast compietely prostrated with rheumatism, in its most aggray: ted character. J tried to obtain relief from the most eminent medical practitioners both here and in Europe, but in vai when, fortunately for myself, I tried the Balsam, and its effe was miraculous; in a word, Ihave never experienced a turn of the disease, showing the cure to be radical.
