2 SPORTING. Exciting Wrestling Match Between Homer Lane and Henry Grace for $1,000—The Contest Undecided. y Last evening Homer Lane and Heury Grace—the latter an Irish wrestler of note—conteaded In the well known arena at No. 600 Broadway for the sum of $1,000. Being the first important occasion on which Grace had come forward since nis arrival in this country there appeared to be much interest taken m the manner in whic he acquitted himself. The competitors were very evenly matched, and sel- dom has a more interesting, sclentific or well con- tested display of the Kind been given in this city. ‘The marvellous rapidity with which the various move- ments were executed and the vigilance exercised by both, created both surprise and admiration. The roceedings Were to have commenced with a wrest-, Rw match between Michael O'Counor and Patrick Evans for $260 a side, but the latter not appearing, owmg to an accident, it was postponed. ‘Then the contestants of the evening appeared, being loudly cheered by their respective supporters. Both men appeased. to be In fair condition, healthy, muscular and vigorous looking. Harry Hill officiated as um- ive for Homer Lane, while Lewis Cole performed hat office on behal! of Grace, the referee being James Center. The articies of agreement made on the 18th inst, set forta that the hoids should be collar and el- bow, two out o! three fair back falls to determine the issue, After the usual preliminaries having been gone through the contestants grasped each other and commenced operations in a tively style. Considerable caution Was at first observed, each ap, oer en- deavoring to tempt the other off aard, Their toma 19 were entirely eon of the usual tugging, hogging and kicking which nerally ¢ aracterize such exhibitions, Grace tried fre ‘toe lock re peated!y, is opponent being very anxious to get the grapevine lock, which he several times almost succeeded in obtaining, Lane now began to force matiers but, Grace neng. oxteotinayy Wary, his vigorous efforts were carefully watch Nearly half av hour was consumed by a very excel- lent and exciting display, the audience at umes ving vent to their feelings in loud applaues, At ngth, by a lightning-like move, Grace got that vine lock on Lane, and, atter a desperate tug, the Jatter was thrown, The next innings was compara- tively brief, although nevertheless well contested. Elated, doubtless, with his success, Grace attem; to force the wrestling; but Lane, Who hopped al as nimbly as a ballet dancer, got the fatal pie upon him and Grace iell. There was now but one fail to decide, and the excitement be- came immense. It was Carine | admitted that co better exhibition could not be witnessed, and the os Sane & which marked the contest much en- Nanced the interest in beholding it, ‘The last was a struggie. Muscie, selence and activity were agnt into requisition with a determination that piaaly evidenced the feelings of the competitors, cores and scores of times one of them was almost gone; but a sudden jump or a plunge would just saye him. At lengti, by a very rapid twist, Lane fel}, Grace by bis side, The fall was properly dis- uted and the referee, on beimg appealed to, held hat it was not 2 fair back fall. The wresiiers then Tesumed operations; but Grace having sprained his ankle it was agreed to postpone the contest. It was certainly a most determined and well matched event, and doubtless the next struggle will be looked forward to with interest. In the first mnings Grace had the choice of holds, which was sometiing dn his favor, a8. It was aiso the case with Lane, he having his favorite grip in the secoad mnnings. The Prize Ring. The much talked of encounter between Allen and McCoole wili scarcely eventuate im a satiziactory de- termination of their merits, considering that nothing but pecuniary motives prompt the backers, It is apparent that prize fighting has now dwindled tu a mere money speculation, and the sooner pugilists and their supporters turn to honest modes of living the better. ‘rhe several legisiatures throughout the States are beginning to adopt such measures as will — check pugilistic encounters. Among others a Dill has Leen passed in Michigan providing that auy mn Who shall hereafter be a party to or enzage aa nize figut, of any other fight in the nature of fight, in that State, or who shat! aid or abet poating shail, on nvietion thereof, be pun- ished by unprisonment in the State Prison for a term not exceeding five years, nor less than one year, or by a fine not exceeding $2,000, nor less than 3100, or by both such fine and fmprisonment, at the dis- cretion of the court. It also promises severe punish- ment for trainers and all persons interested in any way in pugilistic exnibitions, * There are at present very few engagements tn contempiarion, among them beimg Vie following:— March 31—Patsy Davis and S. Herron, in Brooklyn, for #100. Billiards, © ‘The approaching tournament to be held tn this city will probably ve the most interesting exhibition that has taken place for years. There are now eight contestants, and as the prizes are worth competing for a most scientific display may be anticipated. It bas been decided to make the games 1,509 pomts up, andy a afour pocket tae. Each carrom wi count three points, and the pusu will, of course, br barred. Over thirty games wii probably be played. Vermeuien and Houovan are to play the next match for the Lilinois championship. Jt bas been proposed to offer a special prize to the layer Who in the tournament shall make 1,609 points In seven runs, or Whose best seven rugs shal! amount tothe most. The contest throughout wab very interesting, as the resuit wii show, and the exhibition of skill was highiy appre- Ciated Ly the spectators. THE UNION LEAGUE. Impertant Meeting Last Night—Congress and the Legislature to be Invited to Look Inte Public Affairs in New York CityAdoption ef Resolutions of Reform, &ce ‘The Union League Club of this city held a meeting last evening to take action in reference to certain bilig, and measures now pending before the Legisla- ture at Albany. The meeting was organized by the President of the club, Mr. John Jay, in the chair, and the appointment of Mr, Glassey secreiary. Mr, Jay obriefy stated the object of the mect- ing and enumerated the several acts now before tne Legislature having reference to the interests of the city of New York, which they were met to consider. One was an act in regard to the Board of Police Commisstoners, another related to the Commissioners of Education, aud a third to the Commissioners of Taxes, The clud, subsequent to its formation and the accomptishment of its original purpose—namely, the preservation of the Union—had adopted a new article, tn which tt pledged Itself “to resist and expose corruption aud promote reform in our national, State and munictpal affairs, and to eievate the idea of American citizenship.” He referred briefly to the action which the club had taken in pursuance of this article. Heretofore it bad pa: some rather strong resoluuons tu refer- ence to corrupt practices in our Legislature, It had Opposed the appropriations last year for the support of Roman Catholic schools, of a private character exclusively, and later the naturalization frauds last fail in our city and State. The following resolutions were then adopted:— Whereas the select committee of the House of Representa- tives appointed upon the memorial of this body to investigate tho alleged election froude in the city and State of New Yorks having accomphated the digicult duty imposed “upon it with great Ulligence and skill and made its report, thereon, With the testimony on which tl me was based; and whereas by the said report it afirms that “appaling = ‘Ss and startling election frauds have been in our ast hintory they are all surpassed (n some respects by those in the general election in the Stet, and espocially fate chy. ie yo New York on the 34 of November, 198, ‘These nds wero the result of a systematic plan of portions stealtnl_y managed and boidiy execute y bandi of degraded desperadoes but with the direct sanc, Yon, approval or aid of, many prominent oflciale and tizens of New ‘York, with the shrewdiy concealed cone Sivance of uibern; aid almoet without an effort to. die- gourage or prevent them by of those im whose Interest and political party, associations they were success fully executed, who could not fail to have cognizance of them, gud whose duly was to expase, defeat sad pantah them. were aided by an immense corrupt and corrupting olla patronage and power, which not only, encouraged bat nied "and | protected the gulfy principals “an th jers: frands are charastac’ that’ ” Char e* eomprehend’ Known ‘crime against the elective. franchise corruptea the inistration “of jnetioe, degraded ‘the judiciary, deveated the execution of the iavis, subverted for he time Being in New York, State the essential principtes of popular goverament, robbed the people of that great State of hidir rigtfal cholee'ot Blectors or President and Vice Prest. dent, of a Governor and other olllcers; disgraced the most populous city of the Union, encouraged the enemies of republican government here and everywhere to ae our institutions as a fs and endangered the the ree public by an attempt to defeat the will of the peop'e in the cholce of their rulers; and whereas it is undoubtedly trae, as declared in the said report, that “power obtained by fraud. will not wcraple t. perpetuaie itself by Hike means, and the people of the State of New York, whose’ sovereign will has been thus overborne, are utterly unable without the assistance of Congress to protect themselves against a similar conspiracy in future, Sad the ‘matter is one that deeply conccras not only people of the State but of the enti Now, therefore. resolved, that Cons sought'to give to ibis subject their united and tion and to ordafn at the present session some sche turalization which, while oWering all proper factitiies for the, naturaization of allens, will preserve unimpaired the high ignity of Ameriean citizenship, which has been So shamefully degraded, by frand and perjury, and which wil at the aame time wipe out tbe fraudulent anil'couatertelt cer iineates of of ‘onturailzation with which this State an te couns try at large have been flooded from this ety, ia violation of law and justice, and by the means of which, if they are not anaulied by Congress, the abettors ofthe late conspiracy bope to perpetante their igotten power, jensived,, That ©. Some discussions took place between the members as to the Board of Education, some holding the view that the law by which the present board was ap- Pointed should remain, while others beiieve It would be for the interest of the city and the republican party to have a new law passed. Under the present statute there was a smaller proportion of republicans to democrats than under the bill now re the — Legis. lature. A member of the club stated that he had been personally promised by members of Tammany Hail in high political standing that the republicane shouid have an equal or fair repre- sentation in the board tf the bill was passed. Another gentleman stated that he would not tras¢ the political honor of any member of Tummany Hall #0 far as to aceept a pledge of this nature as the basis for passing such an enactment, On the subject of the Police Commissioners there ‘Was also some discussion.
