10 TRE POULTRY | Becond Day of the F air—Openiug Addresy by Horace Greeley- .Large Additions te the Exhibition. Yesterday was t? 9 second day of the first annual fair of the New “ork State Poultry Society, at the Empire City Sé ating Rink, on Third avenue, between Sixty-third @ a Sixty-fourth streets, As stated in the HERALD, yesterday, a large number of additional coops Were received in the morning and placed in Position. Still, there were not enough to bring all ‘tue birds semt to the society for exhibition and com- petition into advantageous view. It seems that the efforts of the society, even during the very short period of tts existence, have met with such general encouragement, approval and assistance throughout the State that almost every hour brings new ‘and =m many instances valuable specimens of the domestic feathered tribe, Thus a great va- riety of splendid Polands were received, of black, brown and bronze and even white turkeys, of di- mensions truly astonishing, also numerous other birds of pure breed, increasing the collection largely and adding to the interest of the exhibition. A dog of the St. Bernard breed has also been brought, and there attaches espécial interest to this animal, inas- much as he was on board the Kate Dyer at the time of her collision with the steamer Scotiand in the lower bay, and by his shrewdness, strength, activity and unmistakeably disinterested exertion succeeded in saving two persons from an untimely watery grave. The attendance during the evening was at no one time very large, though the constant coming aud going of visitors Kept Up a respectable array of gentiemen and ladies, never less than seve- ral hundred, anxiously tnsp\ pecting coop after coo] and diligently inquiring. for the distinguishing quall- ities and peculiar characteristics of this or that breed or species, im the evening, about half-past eight, while be- tween three and four hundred persons were in the rink, the main froat door suddenly swung open and Horace Greeley appeared in his provervial drab colored coat and slouch hat with the weil known philosophical kink in the brim and crown. He was escorted by Mr. George H. Warner, of New York Mills, Oneida county, the president ‘of the society; Mr. Daniel E. Gavit, of this city, secretary, some ‘ether oflcers and_ the members of’ the committee of -arrangements, The band on the platform, which Was erected in the centre of the south wall, struck up a lively march, which, however, was not from any opera bouffe, So detested by Mr. Greeley. When the people in the rink had all congregated in front of the speaker's stand the music ce: and the presi- dent, Mr. Warner, stepped forward and said that he was happy to be able to announce that alter much labor. they had at ljast organized the society for the improvement of the breeds of poultry and other domestic anunals, and would continue their eiforts in that direction. After stating that an additional special remium of a gold medal worth sixty doilars for the st trio of light Brahmas under one year old had been contributed by the Delavan House, of Albany, N. Y., he introduced Mr. Greeley, who, ‘“shed- ding his coat’ and coming to the front, was received with loud applause. He said that on'behaif of the society he proposed to give some idea of their ob jects and Lana omg and the means by whicn they seek to sooonge ish them. There are certain branches of industry which occupy an undue space in the world’s attention, like cotton culture, which was enormously exaggerated because it enters into large combinations and commercial transactions, and great fortunes are made out of it. Others, three times as valuable and as important are overlooked, like the grass culture, because the grass is sumed on or near the farm, is carried but little ways, and enters not into large com- mercial combinations. And so the poultry culvare is not properly estimated, because it appears but sparingly in commerce, figures not in Custom House or revenue returns. Yet itis a large home interest and part of the household economy of the country. Almost every family outside of the city Produces poultry, and évery family in and out of the city consumes it. Many millions of dollars are in- vested in it, and it constitutes the larger part of the Sood of a majority of the peopie. After induiging in a few comparisons, he said that poultry was the safest and most profitavie production; that few farmers around us grow grain with profit, but may poultry, for no production is so remunerative, and scarce any so certain. Our grandmothers knew that @ bucket of ashes, fine lime and gravei were all the outlay required for a poultry establishment; no hen house 18 needed, and in the absence of roosts, fences aud branches of trees will serve, while the chicken manufactures choice food out of fejected Material. But our grandmothers knew not the doctrine of selection of proper breeds, which we know and apply in cattle raising. With choice fowls we can make money, with indiferent not. To Taise always trom one stock tends to degeneration, and we must replace it by abetter breed. After telling the audience that before them were choice species from ail parts of the worid and inviting them to make their selection, that in the poultry even the labor of children, of the feeble, the old and de- crepit can be utilized, that if ten times the amount of poultry were raised the market would not ve over- stocked, he hoped that this fair will be a begining to es @ hew impetus to an industry in which the mbiest may succeed. Mr. Greeley regretted that the noise of the innumerabie birds around him did not allow him to speak more at large upon this sub- ject. He retired amid the plaudits of his hearers, and descending was escorted around the several stands and inspected the chickens, expressing great admiration for the beauty of the specimens on exhi- tion. Among the more prominent visitors last night may be mentioned Chevalier de Loosey, Austrian Consu General, and Mr, Abraham Wakeman. The fair will continue through the week. EX-PRESIDENT JOHNSON AT HOME, His Reception by, His Old Friends=a Speech— ‘There is Life in Me Yet.” * (Greenville, ee (March 20) apt normed of the Knoxville Press and Herald.) At half-past six A. M. the special train for Green- ville leit Knoxville amid a drizzling rain, which Jasved until shortly after our arrival at the former city. A large number of prominent gentlemen and oid friends of Mr. Johnson were passengers, and their number steadily increased by tresh accessions at every siation until the train was crowded by the admirers of the distinguished son of Tennessee. Among the Knoxville delegation we noticed those two stanch conservatives, Colonel T. A. K. Nelson and Coionei John Williams. We found a large crowd around the depot in Greenvitle. The Knoxviile Brass Band was discours- fmg sweet music. Platforms and venches were thronged by ladies, while maidens in angelic white, crowned with wreaths of flowers, oc- cupied a covered archway, in readiness to meet the coming guest. The business men of the towns along the railroad, and a nost of the yeomanry of East Tennessee, awaited with impa- tience the arrival of “Andy Johnson.” The depot, Ss cars and everything to which a flag could attached were decorated wita the national colors. ‘The rain which bad faijen in an incessant drizzle since daylight now ceased. The shrill whistie of the engine of the special train, denoting the coming of the ex-President and his pr: created a sensation among the assembiage, aud us the train came tu sight, decorated wit fags, and stopped in front of the depot building, ana the | known form of “Andy” stepped oif the platform, the vast crowd broke forth into tumuituous applause, the cheering, the ladies waving handkerchtefs, aod every one who could lay nold of a Gag waving it vig- orously. As Mr. Johnson stepped on the platform of the depot he was welcomed by maidens in white dresses, Who presented hit with a bouquet. ‘The ex-President gracefully replied to the compit- ment, and spent a few minutes chatting with Iriends. ‘The procession then formed, and the President en- tering a barouche, the cortege moved to the Court House. Mr. Johuson entered, and after a few minutes, in answer to the repeated and vociferous Calis, appeared on the front porch, Major James Britton weicomed the distinguished guest to Green- viile, in befitting terma, The ex-President was tutroduced by Hon. T. A. Re elson. As Mr. Johnson was presented, he was received ‘with deafening cheers. He spoke as follows:— EX-PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S SPEECH AT oe. After considerable debate a report was adopted dealing a deathblow to everything of an anti-temperance character, and it was resolved that “tonics” and all such “patent medicines” should be heartily discountenanced and that the use or wines and liquors at weddings, social gatherings and on New Year’s Day was deserving of the hearty condemnation of the Conference, One clergy- man said he upheld the republican party because among its other good features it was decidedly in favor of temperance. A report of the Trustees of the Hackettstown Seminary, which set forth that the site was al! that could be aesired, and that cash and subscriptions to the extent of $53,000 had already been subscribed, led to a lively debate of consider- able length, the ‘question at issue being whether the work of buiiding should be proceeded with at once or whether it was best to wait until the necessary funds, $100,000, had been subscribed. Mr. David Campbell, of Newark, came forward, and, alter a lengthy address, stated that he would give $10,000 toward the work, provided others would also respond in like manner. Mr. Cornelius Walsh, another bright and wealthy Methodistic lignt, spoke @ second time on the subject and declared that he would not disappoint the brethren in his donation. poe matter was then tabled.
