; COCK FIGHTING IN SEW MEXICO. Main Fought in Santa Fe, Between Americans and Mexicans, for $600—The Americans Victorious—Scrub Fights, Santa Pe, March 8, 1809. Cock fighting is the most popular sport in New Mexico, and the fondness shown by the natives for this excitable pastime would hardly be believed if not witnessed. There 1s searcely any privation that they will not willingly endure to procure funds with which to back their favorite birds, and very o!ten they will even stake the coatoff thelr back. “Gaffs” fre seldom if ever used in this Territory, but the cocks are armed with formidable-looking knives, owing to which fights are very seldom prolonged ever three or four minutes, In Santa Fé Sunday ls the day upon which the most sport is witnessed, and until lately the oid market place was the rendezvous of cock fighters; bute few months ago Mr. Willam Foster, a well known member of the sporting fraternity, built a regular ‘pit, capable of accommodating irom three to four hundred persons, and since the opening aay it has been crowded And by a mL concourse including some of the as of the ol. with @ sprin- kling of regular army y officers and Mexican seno- ritas. A charge of twenvy-five cents is made for admission to the pit. and a band of music 1s in attendance, which plays alter eacn fight. A great amount of rivalry exists between the Americans and Mexicans in the matter of cock fighting, and rey. fight is considered somewhat of a nftional struggle on @ small scale. On yesterday (Sunday) a main was fought, the best two outof three fights, tor $600, which resulted in favor of the Americans, whose oirds were handled in @ masterly manuer by Mr. Wm. Foster, who is quite = adept in the business. The fights were as [ol- OWS :— First Fight.—Both parties showed dark reds, shone four pounds weight. The birds went to in good eile, but after aiew ties the Mexican t broke his if6 and had to ve reheeled; being again brought bs the scratch they fought ratuer et for some time, but eventually the American killed bis oppo- neut, which result was received with great cheers by the gerd Time, eight minutes. ‘The Americans showed a blue and brown, ‘and the Mexicans a dark red, each bird weighing about four pounds. The. Mexican was an old fighter, having won % great many fights, and was by lar the favorite. Huving been brought to the scratch the dark red rushed forward with terrific velocity and cut his adversary down at the first fly, killing him tnsiantly, Time, five seconds, The Mext- cans Checred lustily aller tis ight, aud their hopes commenced to revive: Third Fight.—1the Americans came to time with a dark red and the Mexicans introduced a blue and red, cach about tour and a half pounds weight. Both birds were very much admired and promised a good fight. At the tirst tly the American tse ve his op- ponent a very ugly cut m_ the east, but the latter was game and did not seem inclined to give up his chances so very soon, but alter a few more Gies It ieli down quite dead. Time, one and a haif “cong The American bird was not at ull injured. ‘ihe Americans were now jubilant and the Mexicans correspoadingly depressed, having lost the main in about titeen tuinutes. ‘The betting throughout was mostly even, and a great amount of money changed hands. Alter the principal main several scrub fights took place, the most noticeable of which was for $69. ‘The Americans showed a spotted white and the Mexicans a dark red. both birds went to work in a lively manner, and the Ainerican got badly cut and sank to the ground amidst great cheers from the Mexicans, but the cut bird was game. He crawled a’ong the ground unti! he came up to his adversary, whom he cut very badly and forced to make a hasty retreat. The cheers were now on the other side of the house, and the Mexicans appeared very crest- fallen. so igs will fight an- It is understood that the sai other main on March 14, for $1, SITUATIONS WANTED—FEMALES, Cooks, ac.
