10 REVOLTS AT SING SING PRISON. Two Desperate Attempts at Escape by Bands of Convicts. BEURDER OF A EEEPER. Three of the Prisoners Severely Wounded While Attempting to Seize a Sloop. Full Particulars of the Emeute and Inter- esting Incidents. At five o'clock yesterday morning the ominous peals of the alarm bell at the State Prison in Sing Sing warned the officers of that institution, and also the slumbering cluzens of the village, that all was not right among the convicts. Within the prison lumits hurried toilets were made by those guards and keepers wno, having been on watch during the early part of the night, were endeavoring to recruit strength for the comiug day. Having nssembled in hot haste it was soon discovered that two of the watchmen had been tied and gagged during the night; that one of them, Edwin Craft, was dead, and that five convicts had escaped by cutting a hole through the roof of the chapel. The deceased was a night watchman im the messroom, his special duty being to look after a convict named Mulvey, who acted as a sort of engineer around the boilers. On each morning it is the duty of a night keeper named Thomas Forrest to unlock the cells of four or five convicts, at about the hour of three e’clock, and conduct the men to the bakehouse, where their allotted work was to make the bread for breakfast. Yesterday morning at the hour above named four men were taken out for this purpose by Mr. Forrest, and when passing through the chapel, on the way from the main prison to the messroom, he was seized by the convicts, who bound him hand and foot, placed a gag firmly in hig mouth and left him 1n that condi- ton. They then went forward into the messroom where they found Craft and treated him in a similar manner as regards tying and gagging, with this unfortunate difference, that when the latter was dis- covered, perhaps two hours afterwards, he was quite dead. The only mark of violence discernable about Craft was a small quantiy of blood about his mouth. This was believed to have been caused by the gag, as when one end of the string was cut the gag sprang out as though it had been tightened in a vice. His tongue was also doubled up in his mouth, and, while his body was warm, no signs of life could be called back, although prompt measures for resuscitation were resorted to. For- rest, whose evidence will be found below, suc- ceeded in getting ate free, but his hands were Tettered htly his mouth securely sealed when aiscovered the ards lover in the morning, appears that on encountering Craft, * engtnecr, Mulvey assisted the desperate pets in tying hit aise ‘which all five made their way, by picking other well studied contrivances to the roof of She chapel by ante where with ay oe tney bored me fpiece of wood, making a hole large enough to ad- A aman by crawling. This done it was an easy matter to remove the slates from the outside and for the present taake good thetr exit. The intentions of the runaways may be judged irom the fact that two of the largest knives used in the kitchen were found mee pe any emergency, were um their hurry gine ‘Biledeoy the roof. It is be- Neved that runaways had for some time been maturing this mode of escape, and it, Cycenpeal coming to their ears that they were suspected gipitated the scheme. 48 soon as the escape was made Known guards were sent out to scour the country. Telegrams were also despatched to all parts of the State, so that the a mt escape of vhe convicts may be regarded as impossible. SECOND REVOLT BY THE CONVICTS, Later in the day, and between one and two o'clock, seven of the convicts, named earner Timothy Donovan, Daniel O'Connell, Edward Jaines McAule pe Allen, —— Donnelly ry Wil- iam = lead by James Meautey, rushed stationed at the Middle on guar dock oo aad having overpowered him seoured his rifle, together with a carbine and a revolver, all loaded. With these they jumped on board a sloop loaded with lumber, which had just arrived, and ordered the keeper who was on board to goon the dock under pain of shot, Being anarmed the latter obeyed, and the convicts at once ent the vessel loose trom the dock, pn warning the captain and crew not to offer resistance. McAuley then commenced fring at the guards who were hurrying towards the spot, and in this mur- derous volley he was joined by his com- panions while the cha in their weapons lasted. A shot from one of the keepers at length brought McAuley down, and the captain of the sloop luayiug wrenched the carbine from tus clab- bed him with it. White any one of the convicts on the vessel was visible above the pile of lumber on her deck a brisk fire was kept up by the prison off- clais on the shore, and this with the aid of the crew overpowered the would-be runaways, who were soon landed and taken charge of. During the affray Mc- Auley received two shots, one entering his back, wile ‘the other through his thigh— the former ich will probably prove fatal. Philip ‘atten, anotner convict, was shot through the hip. ‘His wound, however, is not considered dangerous. When McAuiey’s clothes chad been taken off in the hospital a box of matches and a@ map of the State of New York were found jconcealed on his person, of course showing that his ¢ vempt to escape had been leisurely concocted. A tulrd convict on board the vessel was seen ing from the lumber over the side, in order to screen himself from the fire of the guards, when one of the latter, atming deliberately, shot him. He was heard by several to cry out and was then seen to drop into water. Later in the afternoon it had not becn asceriained who he was. McAuley vad Allep were recently sent here for twenty years 1 tom New York. While the noon revolt was going © uO it was thought that @ general “break” was yout to teabapere therefore a telegram was sent to th » for help. It was responded to imme- ai \tely by hundreds of men armed with all sorts of we pons, and the excitement was intense, This aft ‘rhoon ali was quiet, and will probably remain got ‘rough the night. Other witneszes were examined, but their testi- mony was mainly corroborative of that given by keeper Forrest. In order to secure additional eve dence the inquest was adjourned until this morning. Later—Capture of Three of the Escaped Con- victs. It appears that after effecting their escape from ‘the prison the five desperadoes struck the railroad along, which they travelled until reaching Sparta, which is but @ short distance from the prison, where itis alleged they separated, three of them—John Burns, Henry Muller and Charles Lockwood alias Henry O’Neil—following the railroad track to Tarry- town, where they were captured about half-past five o'clock yesterday evening, and the other, it is thought, struck back into the country. HOW THEY WERE CAPTURED. Mr. George Storms, of Tarrytown, who had been spending the night with some friends in that vil- lage, was returning home, about four o'clock in the morning, and just as he was coming out of the woods first caught sight of two men near the barn of his brother, Mr. Jacob Storms, which is.sit- uated on the ridge is back of Tarrytown, Not knowing who tiey were, and believing them to be horse thieves, he watched them and saw them shortly afterwards enter the barn. He then went and awoke his brother. Mr. Storms and his brother then searched the barn, but could find no trace of them. They then went to the house and procured some firearms and returning to the barn made another search, but with a like result, Shortly after five o’clock in the afternoon the news reached Tarrytown of the escape of the prisoners from Sing Sing, and the Messrs, Storms determined upon making another search for the suspicious char- acters who had been seen to enter their barn. Mr. Jacob Storms, arined with @ revolver, and Mr. George Storms, armed with @ pitchfork, again entered the barn and commenced another search. As Mr. George ‘Storms was vigorously stirring up the hay with the ———_ he suddenly became aware of something ard beneath the hay, and mentioning the fact to his brother was told by him to try again, when one of the prisoners, who was hid beneath the hay, cried out, “Hold up, and I'll come out.” Both, it aj were lying together, the Germ Henry Mutter, being the first to come out, and John Burns, alias Richard Smith, foliowing immediately after. They then came down tbe ladder, Mr. Storms having his re- volver ready to use in case of emergency. They were then eoueged to the depot, where they were hand- cuffed by Constable A. Lawrence, who had been hunting for them all day,.and by him were conveyed back to the prison at King Sing, where they were given in charge of the prison authorities. On the way from Tarrytown to Sing Sing the prisoner Muller asked Burns if he had laid the keeper upon the table, to which the latter replied that he had not, whereupon Muller remarked that he should have done so, to prevent lum trom catching cold, Both complained of being hungry, and when they were toid that one of the keepers Was dead they feigned surprise, and each said that he did not doit.
