Ap Unfertuuate Elopement and its Unfortue nate Sequel. ‘The readers of the HERALD will readily recollect the interesting case of elopement, where one Alfred Adier ang Madame Julie Calvert, of the gay city of Paris, left ita pleasant confines together and accepted an Mlegal union in this city, recently published in ita columns, They will also remember how tne erring couple, after a brief sojourn im New York, ‘‘fell out;’? how Monsieur taunted Madame with infidelity, and how he rather summarily relieved her of valuable dresses, laces, shawls, watches, diamond earrings and golden coin amounting to several hundred dollars, Again, they will recall to mind that Madame had the sparkling Frenchman arrested and taken to the Jefferson Market Police Court,'when he aston- ished the justice on the bench by claiming that the articles were his and hig alone, bought by his funas and extended to her in conalderation for her friend- ship and love. This announcement rather made the case more opaque than otherwise, and the Tesult «was that the misguided Alfred was sent for was free. Baldwin and Others vs, Roswet 8. Bur- Troughs and Others.—This case was partially tried the 18th of January last, but in consequence of the sickness of a Juror Jwent over for the term and waa again taken up yesterday. ‘fhe plaintiff in tne action, partners as commission merchants in the city of New York, under the firm name of D, H. Baldwin & Co,, claim to have entered into an arrangement with the defendants, by which tho former were em- ployed as the agents of the latter to ship 1,000 bales of cotton to plaintidy’ correspondents, Whitworth & Brothers, Manchester and Liverpool, for a coin- mission of one and a haif per cent upon the net proceeds, and to insure the same against marine risks.
