FINANCIAL, AND COMMERCIAL. WEDNESDAY, Feb, 24—6 P, M. ‘The money market worked with conunued ease to-day and the rates on call loans ranged from four to seven per cent. These were the extreme or ex- coptional figures both ways. The legitimate quota- bie rates are five and aix per cent on government collaterals and six and seven per centon miscel- Japeous securities, Commercial paper was not active, but rates remained firm at seven to nine per @ent, Foreign exchange was quiet but steady at the Iast quotations, The decline in gold tends to still further curtail the supply of cotton and produce bulls, During the afternoon foreign exchange mani- & tendency to firmness, but its disposition that way was checked by the cable news of an advance of bonds in London to 791{, subsequent private tele- grams announcing 7924. Gold in the early portion of the day reflected the de- moralization produced by the announcement that the Hooper bill was killed in the Senate, The price opened at 182% and went up to 132%; but realiza- tions at this point caused a reaction, which was stimulated by the news of a further advance of bonds in Loudon, The market was afterwards va- riable and sensitive. The range of price was as fol- lows:— WAM. 19255 ol A. 133: 203 A. M. 182: 10:00 A. M. 182% nA. Mi 182% igs in ae Poe Daeg Poss immense amount of short sales made cash good demand, and § to 3 wag pald for carry- pe clearings were $95,464,000, thé gold = $3,052,984, and the currency balances $4,433,455, The Cuba took out $15,000 in specie, Governments at the opening were weak and dull, for the reasons cited in the case of gold. At the noon board there was a better feeling and a decided improvement in the afternoon, based upon the ad- vance in London, as well as the passage by the Iouse of the Schenck bill. Both these causes should have operated to create a larger advance here than they did, and doubtless would have done so had not operators been made timid as to the fate of the Schenck bill in the Senate, by the fate which there met its predecessor, the Hooper Dill. On the other hand, the decline in gold on this side of the Atlantic renders it almost profitiess to ship bonds to catch the advance on the other side, The market at the close was @ healthy one, all the more 80 for the equilibrium established by the canses just enumerated, and prices were firm at the improve- ment, without speculative or undue excitement. At five o'clock the following quotations prevatied on the street:—Uulted States sixes, 1851, registered, 113% 911334; do., coupon, 114 @ 11414; do., 5-20’s, Fegistered, 111 & 111%; do., coupon, 1862, 115 4 3 do, 1864, 111% a 122; do, 1965, 13 a 3 do., new, 1865, 110% a 111; do., 1867, 11144 11134; do., 1868, 11134 a 11144; do., 10-40's, registered, 103% @ 10314; do., coupon, 109% a 100%; currency bonds, 101% a 101%. Tho following were the bids for the cl'y bank stocks to-day at the. regular board:—New York, 133; Man- hattan, 140; Mechanics’, 129; America, 140; Phent 107; Mechanics’? and Traders’, 125; Merchants’ E: change, 11734; State of New York, 114},; Commer 120; American Exchange; 116; Chatham, 450; North America, 109; Hanover, 109; Irving, 199; Metropelt- tan, 140; Corn Exchange, 128; Continental, 99; Com- monweaith, 1104; Park, 1573<; Manufacturers’ and Merchants’, 101; Central National, 109; Fourth Na- tMonal, 103; Ninth National, 111, ‘The stock market was animated under large and nomerous transactions in Pacific Matl, Michigan Southern and Fort Wayne, witch occupied the at- tention of the hour to the neglect of the gene- raj list in the eariler portion of the day. Pacific Mail was noticeable lor a steady re- covery from 972 to 101, under the covering of speculative sales. As its price advanced the “bears” were quite ii-tempered and some of them were Joudly offering to bet $5,000 that the stock wouid touch 85 before it would touch 110, Michigan South- ero advanced to 977;, which figure brough out sellers who were long of the stock at 86 to 90 and were content to “take their profit.” The price reacted between one and two per cent, but recovered to 973, at the close. Kort Wayne suddenly ad- vanced to 125, and under similar circumstances sold back to 12534, reacting upward at the close. Pittsburg improved about one per cent, under reports of a treaty of peace between the present directors and the Erie-Lane party, The fea- ture of the day, however, was a sharp decime in express stocks, Adams falling five per cent and United States about seven, based upon a threat- ened renewal of the war against the express com- panies by the railway companies simultaneous with the campaign against “fast visas lines. How far these stories are started by the eXpress companies themselves remains to be seen. One of these stocks ‘was run up very suddenly » few weeks since, and then “unloaded.” It ts posstble now that the sellers ‘want to get their stock back again, At the annual meettng of the Almaden Quicksilver Mming Company to-day the following directors were elected» W. Elwell, James D. Fish, Ashbel Green, € Gould, Edwin Hoyt, David Mahany, Ludlow Pat- tov, Join &K. Pruyn, GE. Taintor, Jotm M. Tobin and Alfred BK. Tilton.
