10 EUROP SPAIN, The Ineult ‘e the Papal Surro monstration Speeches of ded byean Hacked Pepulace—De- Favor of Religious Freedom— ‘errand, Prim and Topele. MADRID, Jan. 28, 1869, ¢ yon an account yesterday of the anti-clerical uion of the people of Madrid on the pre- vious bight, in which the palace of the Nuncio would Lave suffered a great deal had not Rivero, the First Alcalde, reached the ground in time to protect it with volunteers, As it was, the Papal coat of arma was torn down, dragged through the streets, and finally burned in front of the Minister of Grace and Justice. The Nuncio himself, Jearmng the feeling of the multitude towards himeelf, very sensibly found refuge in either the French or American Legation, He would have suf- tered if he had fallen into the hands of the mob, which was crying “Death to the Pope,” “Down with the Nuncio,” &c., with great. vehemence. For tunately he was not found, and the capital was spared a scene that would have tarnished tts fame tor ever. Another demonstration was made in front of the residence of the President of the Council of Minis- ters, General Serrano, and at atime when the Coun- cil was in session discussing matters connected witg tne atrocious assassination of the civil Governor of Burgos. Several thousand people joined in the manifestation, as it took place on the Calle de Alcala, one of the principal streets of the city, and commit- tees were jormed to wait upon thé government and demand the immediate issue of am decree declaring freedom of worship. The Coun- cil of Ministers received the various depu- tations from the masses, and from the Tertalia Progressista, and hstened attentively to what they had to offer; and finally, when the state- ments were completed, the President of the Ministry, General Serrano, went to the window and addressed the crow: crowd, Ww! ‘was crying, “Vind la Livertad de cuter!
