A large Portion of this increase has been over roads running through newly settled country. The Chicago and Northwestern, for instance, shows an increase of $1,717,286, indicating the profit which is flowing to the company from the new country developed by it, On the Milwaukee and St. Paul there is a gain of $883,953, but there has been an extension of mnileage on this road from 735 miles to 825 miles, The Chicago and Alton has earned the past year $4,544,133 on 431 miles of road (the first six months. of the year only 280 miies were run), and its total stock and bonds reach $10,255,982; the Chicago and Northwestern has earned $13,429,534 on 1,152 miles of road, and its total stock and bonds reach $43,985,363; the Chicago and Rock Island has earned $4,487,791 on 454 miles exchange is weaker, having closed at 100% a 10034 for the best bankers’ sterling, sixty days. ‘ The go!d market continues the scene of an obsti- nate contest between the “bulls” and “bears? The former are conjectured to number in their ranks one of the promment cliques in the stock market. ‘The Connection between the two markets is very obvious to every one familidr with the course of affairs 4n Wall street, An advance in the premium is almost certain always to produce a rise in stocks. The depreciation in greenbacks thus implied creates a more reckless and @ More specniative feeling. People who hold greenbacks uuder such circumstances are disposed to invest them. It is @ fact well known in the dewelry trade, for instance, that the higher the price -of gold the greater the demand for gold and silver ‘ware, The tendency of the market is naturally toa Yielding in the premium, and hence the strong efforts made to sustain it. The Appearance of the Body—The Burial Place of Booth, (From the Washington Chronicle, Feb. 9, i) The President issued an order yesterday morning for the delivery of the remains of Mrs. Surratt to Father Walter, of St. Patrick’s church, of this city, and yesterday afternoon at three o’clock that gentle- man, In company with Mr. Towne and Harvey & Marr, undertakers, proceeded to the Arsenal, and the remains were at once disinterred. Immediately after the efecution Mrs, Surratt’s re- mains, with those of Payne, Harold and Atzerodt, executed at the same time, were placed in hoxes and interred tm graves near the scattold, her body being at the north end of the row and tie others ad- jotuing her remains in tue order named above, In the box with each body there was also placed the name of the party, written on parchment, enclosed in a bottle. ‘Ihe body of Boot was also buried near there; that is, inside the old Penitentiary building, near the main door of the warden’s residence. ‘The burial of Booth was quietly made, in the presepce of Secretary Stanton, Generai Lafayette C. For some time the bodies were allowed to rematn in this position. A wooden fence was erected around the graves, aud a wooden headboard, with the name of the person buried below, placed at each grave. In the fall of 1867, when the demolition of the Penitentiary building was determined on, it became necessary to remove the bodies, and they were buried in the warehouse known as No.1 (ihe second building below the principal ofice), the bodies being placed under the flagging.
