Dottne and Another.—This was an action brought against the defendants for damages by reason of the seimure by the sheriff of $1,100 worth of property under an attachment on which defendants were mndamen, The defence was that the bondsmen on e undertaking were not liable. James Wilson, a young man of about twenty-five, ‘was tried and convicted yesterday of violating the jos bed Mary Carr on the 14th of December last Fries she was on board of a canal boat lying in At- tic basin. The outrage was not denied by the otence, but 1¢ was all that the injured woman compliant. The jury returned s verdict of guilty, and the prisoner was sentenced to seven Years and six months in the State Prison. Other Sentences. Jane Jackson pleaded guilty to petit larceny and ‘was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in the Penitentiary, James Darkey pleaded guilty to an assault and was bag to the Peultentiary for one year. . Of these eight are attributed to carelessness of the par- ties ownirg or using the premises on which they oc- curred, eleven to accidental causes and six to the work of the Incendiary. The ut!dings'in which the fires originated are classified as follows:—Dwellings, 10; factories, 6; stables, 2; Uquor stores, 2; butcher shop, 1; carpenter t B10, 1, and other stores, 3. ‘Totai icas on propery 33,350, upon which was an inmnranes of $50, Four lives were lost by suffo- cation at these fires, and several others narrowly e3- caped. The Marshal draws attention to the extreme danger in the use of explosive kerosene, which should be discontinued rt opalble. The number of these lamp explosions are fearfully on the increase, and in every case their origin may be traced to the inferior cuslity of the ot! used, ree persons were arrest! charge of arson. BoarD or EpvcaTion.—The Board of Education met last evening at their rooms in Red Hook lane. A petition was received asking the Boar to request the Mayor to pave Butler street, between Fiatbush and Vanderbilt avenues. Referred to the President of the Roard, witn power. A petition was received from some colored residents in School District No. 2 asking the Poard to dismiss the white teacher from the cslored school; also that a colored committee be appointed to take charge of the school, ‘The petition was referred to a epecial committee of three, The Committee on Teachers submitted tyeir report upon resignations, appointments, &c. e report was adopted. The Schoolhouse Committee presented a plan for a new schoolhouse on Ryerson street, known as No. 31. The school is for the relief of schools Nos. 4 and 12, which are now too crowded. The plans are to remain on exhibition for a short time. Mr. Carroll offered the following:— Resolved, That potlie: school No. 1 be appointed as a grammar athoo! only. and that all children above fifth gram- mar grade schools “Nos. 5,7, 8and 14 be transferred to anid No. 1; that the school 'be mppcinies and managed by local commitvee No. 1, with av additional member from each of the schools Nos. 5, 7, 8 and 14. After a short debate npon the propriety of such a step the resolution was adopted.
