Je Concluding with (he ssonnd ‘and third scenes of by the Lincelles on the 11th inst would seem to leave 626 coolies still residing on the isiand, but in reality there were 306 known to exist, according to the ad- ministrator’s estimate. The cost has been very heavy; the importation of the 1,613 coolies stands in to the colony £50,443 16s, 3d,, or £33 68. per head. Tue account before us states that of the 298 laborers that have lett the colony 199 deposited £2,907 188. at the treasury, in snws varying from £190 to £10, to be re- turned to them or to their representatives in India, The system has come toa deadlock, and tie press of St. Lucia complains that coolie immigration, while it undoubtedly beuetited the immigrants themselves, has pot assisted in po 2 measure to improve the con- dit.on either of the colony or of the piunters, The latest advices from Georgetown, Demerara, are to Decemver 8. A controversy was still going on.in the question of corporea| ; unisuinent in the case of heathen immigrants who commit murder on their wives. The Governor is of opinion that a sen- tence of death passed uvon a coolte must be carried ont as it would be uf passed upon a person of any otuer nationality or reugious belief in the colony, and that the Executive cannot interfere to commute the sentence merely because of a recommendation to mercv on the part of the jury, But as the number of femalessintroduced into the colony from Asia is very swall compared with the men, and as they do not mix with the other portion o the population, it is contended that until this evil be prevented inddelity among the women und hatred and jealousy among the men will inevitably occur, and this ought tirst to be prevented and then punished if after provid- ing against no abatement should result. The Gov- enor has addressed @ circular to the proprietors and attorneys of estates on the foregoing subject. He thinks that the effects of the evil mij oe be counter- acted to some degree by aneffort of the managers of estates. The Supreme Criminal Sessions were sitting. On the 4th Andrew Valentine Calvin, a native of the United States, was put on trial for arson, said to have been committed as tar back as 1864. He was tried in 1865, but the jury not agreeing to a verdict he was discharged on batl. In the present case, doubts arising in the ‘minds of the jury whether the fire was done wilfully, he was discharged.
