| | | | | —_—- - FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Toxspay, Jan, 19—6 P. M. ‘The great feature of the stock market to-day was New York Central, which at one time sold up to 166%, and dropped to 162 at the close. In the morn- ing the opening price was 16534, whence there was @ steady rise to the highest figure mentioned. Heavy Fealigations resulied in sending the price down to 1057, a 1653, at whieh the market was quite sceady uptil fhe affernooa session ‘of 6 fegilar board, when prices were ‘again buoyant, but did not touoh the highest figures ‘of the morning boards, Realizations, more or leas ‘extensive, worked the price gradually down until prices at the end of regular business had fallen off to those at the bextuning. The grand coup occurred im the Long !toom just previous to the adjourn- ‘ment and on the street, where excited dealings took place up to a few minutes before six o'clock this eveninz. ‘Those who were {n posses. mion of the facts 28 feyealed in the aMdavit ‘of Commodore \gudurbilt, elicited by the suit of Mr. Jencks, began to sell the market immediately ‘upon thé sivength of the disclosures therein con- ‘talaed. The “bulls,” who were not iu the secret that the testimony had been made public, or who were “long” ul the stock at the high prices of the day, made a wil fight inthe dark against the attack of the “shorts,” and, if it might be so styled, a hand to hand conres* ensued between the rival classes of operators, W) ch, after their removal from the Long Room by the turning off of the gas, was prolonged upon the sidewatk in front of the Stock Exchange ‘until both sides crew weary and desisted, with the advantages of battle decidedly in favor of the “bears.” The we at one time was very excited. ‘The contest for a s of the princi»! operators, who hurled figures and fractions at yach other with the volubility of auctioneers, witie the Tespective partisans stood by with bated breath and watched the Horatil and Ouratil of this financial @attle. Then the struggle would extend to the whole street. again, and the Diack, swaying mass become a Babel of cries and catia, The success of the attack seems toynave been derived from its suddenness and from the ignorance of the other side as to ite cause, rather than from any real inherent strength. Tie ‘bulls’ were mystified at the sudden ‘turn of affairs, not knowing that the court proceed- ings in the Jencks-Vanderbilt suit had been given to ‘the preas and public. The “bears” were the first to learn the facts, and they bore down upon the market with all thetr force. When ls Gomes to be known that the aMdavit of Mr. Vanderbilt discloses nothing which ‘was not already fully known tothe street the “bulls!” will doubtless return to the fight, reassured that the stock is now worth just as much as it was before these alleged revelations were made. A very pretty sequel to the demonstration of tiis evening Will, therefore, reopen the battle in New York Cen- tral to-morrdw. The rest of the list sympathized more or leas vith the advance and decline m @en- tral. The active stocks were Fort Wayne, Michigan Southern, Rock Island and St. Paul. The firat mentioned went up to 124%, on accduntiet large purchases said to have been made by the Erie directors with a view to controlling the next elec- tion, which comes off In March, If this be the case 1 would indtcate that the ErieCompany have had @ misunderstanding with the Columbus and Chicago Company and are now seeking to get au outlet to Chicago from the vicinity of Urbanna, by way of the Pitusburg and ort Wayne road. Again—and this version ig tlie most probable—the whole story is told for the purpose of enabling the Erie clique to dispose advantageously of the Fort Wayne shares which they purchased so freely a few weeks since. ‘The public may set it down for fact that all the movements reported to be tm the interest of the Erie Railway are stockjobbing canards, Michigan Southern was also an effective stock with the same Erie clique to-day, and its price ran up to 98%. The Erie road is a cumbersome, heavy, broad vauve road, which can never hope to compete with the narrow-traked New York Central and Pennaylyania Central, which flank it on both sidés and are the favorites for shipments from the West, “As soon ss an intention ts shown to place it fa the great network of railways by reducing its gauge the public may place some faith in the extravajant pretensions of forming con- negion wil the many Western roads which areto make the Drie one of the highways between the West and the ast, To give an air of probability to the story that the Erie party are secking to con- trol Fort Wayne, it was stated to-day that a proml- nent member of the clique had gone to Europe to purchase the ‘vremn proxies. Pittsburg shares were firmer on account of reports from Cleveland fa- vorable to the stockholders’ side of the con- troveray, Tho St. Paul stocks were one per cent better on account of the’ arrival of the long-iooked-ior dividend. The Express stocks were active, partivular.y Adama, which sold up to 57%. ‘Those enfans ‘erridles, the Erie clique, were also credited witli this movement; but the real reason of it very probally is the purchase of the stock for de- livery to the American Merchants’ Unton, in com- pliance with fhe terms of the recent convention by which the Adams ls to be restored tie old routes, The Mariposs stocks were quite active, Gold was dull, with a deciining tendency, which effected a yicidiug of three-eighths in the price. The “pulls” bourht largely against an expected ship- ment of specie witch did not take place. ‘The range In price was us follews:— 10.A. M. +. 135% 2PM. 1AM tse 8 P.M. 12M. iP i ee oP. Lousianas were very strong, being the exception to general stoo eos of the market, and sales of levee eights are repo: tod at 88. Foreign exchange was weaker in the middie of the day, and prime bankers’ was sold at 109% a 109%, Later, in presence of the demand for Wednesday's steamer, the fares advanced to 10934 a 100%, with @ great deal done at the lower quotation. Business in the stock market embraced large trans- actions and nearly the whole fist was farrly dentt in. Few stocks were neglected. The plethora of national ourrency in ihe city stimulates investment, so that while to-day tue market had all the clements of a panic, owing to the high. prices of stocks, as com- pared with values two or three weeks ayo, and theex- pected reaction from such inflation, the “bear? attack at the close, while it unsettiod New York -Contral, failed to make a corresponding change in axes, 874 @ 8736; Louisiana sixes," the rest of the Hist Prices einen ae wore stayed by the eagerness ¢ avest at the deci'na, me dees quotattorg Of the lest open board ‘90; Wells, Fargo & o's Expres, % ‘bid; American Express, $8 bid; Adams “xpress, 62a 58; United States Express, 46 ® @; Merchants’ Union Express, 15% @ 16%; Quicksilver, 244 ® 25; Canton, 55 a 65%; Mariposa; 7 a 97;; do. preferred, 24 9 243;; Pacific Mail, 12134 8122; Western Union Telegraph, 34% & 8534; New York Central, 165% a 165%; Erle, 30 & 3034; Hudson River, 131 9 181%; Harlem 182% # 183; Reading, 95% 9 95%; Chicago and Alton preferred, 147 @ 150; Bankers’ and Brokers’, 102 bid; Alton and Terre Haute, 40 bid; do. preferred, 65 a Wabash, 613s a 62; Milwaukee and St. Paul, 75, do. preferred, 953¢ @ 955%; Fort Wayne, 123% a 124%; Ohio and Mississipp!, 83% a 94; Michigan Southern, @ 9234; igre Central, 140; Pitts- burg, 8624; ee Rock Island, 1299 129}; Northwestern, Oe & aes ft et Fa Water Power, da é "4 From these prices, which are lower than the highest of the day, there was decline upon the street after five o'clock, The market was spasmodic in its fluctuations, rendering it very dim- cult to fx prices precisely at a given time. So far the encouragement has been reasonable. The property offered for sale hes excited fair competition and realized Just appreciative prices, and unless holders should too greedily seck to secure at once the figure which the various improvements in progress and design point that their possessions will one day be worth the anticipations of large dealings in real estate next month and succeeding will prove correct.
