Of the many charitable institutions of this city none recommends itself more thoroughly tothe no- tice of our citizens than the school and Orphan Asy- lum of St, Vincent de Paul. This society com- menced on an exceedingly small scale and haa grown in a few years tobeone of the most re. Mable and ably conducted of the many numerous establishments of this description connected with the Catholic Church. Three orphan children were at first taken in and cared for by one of the Sisters at the suggestion of Rev. Father Lafont, ‘The num- ber increased to seventeen, when the sister found that this responsibility in connection with her schook teaching was more than she could assume, Shortly after the Sisters of the Holy Cross took charge of the rapidly increasing number, and, with the as- sistance of eminent ladies of this city, hired two houses in Twenty-sixth street, near Seventh ave hug, and there established an asylitil and ind School for orphan children. Neither the na tionality, the religion of orphans nor the parish to which they belong are questioned ‘when admisaion to the asylum is sought, thus mak- ing it m good earnest the worthiest of charities, ‘These two buildings are now crowded—applicants being daily on account of this repletion denied ad- mittance. The size of these buildings rendering them unfit for further occupancy the pastor of the Church of St, Vincent de Paul and the managers of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society attached to that church determined to build an asylum large enough to accommodate all the poor little orphans, half orphans or children deserted by parents who made application for homes. A large, elegant building, oc- cupying five and one-third lots, in Thirty-ninth street, and 100 feet west of Seventh avenue, is in pro- cess of erection. The situation is very fine, emt- nently healthy and convenient of access, where chil- dren of any age will be taken and properly cared for. ‘The ladies composing this benevolent society pay to the Sisters the monthly sum of six dollars for each child and furnish comfortable wearing apparel. No cropped hair here and checked uniforms to brand the Poor little inmates with the mark of charity. It seems necessary for any institution of this character to adopt a particular style of dreas, It ig sometimes a subject for speculation when visit- ing these establishments whether one has not by mustake blundered into a penitentiary instead of a spot redolent with “sweet charity.” However, 80 long as good is accomplished, it is scarcely Christian or in keeping with that loveliest of ali virtues, the “thinking no ill,” to sharply criticise, but we shall Sry Apne ny yey residences compenet by rnin to accept ob may not feel that the 1aark of wretched ese places: udence is Written all over them. . ere are twenty-eight boys, ranging in age from ‘three to eleven, are seventy Ray, pitts, frou rom Fd to sixteen. The faces are mostly ind inteiligent. Questions are promptly answered, not at all as if tramed to make a good impression upon visitors, but shyly and with a little twinkle of fun in their eyes, which poverty and cruel treatment too olten crush out of the face and manners of the tuany even. ‘The boys’ schoolroom is furnished in the same manner, and the little fellows are weli kept aud tidy. ‘The dormitories are clean and in the best of order, but altogether too crowded for heaith, having irom tweive to eighteen beds in cach apartment, with only two windows, and in many cases three n@ . This diniculty wiil be entirely obviated in the new asylum, which is progressiny as rapidiy as the state of the weather will allo The industria! sckooi is a very interesting depart- ment, where the giris are taught every description of needlework, Fine undercothiag 1s here made to order for different fauuies in ory best style, two Sisters having eutire charge of this division, ‘They are required to exercise regularly, noi allowed to stoop over work, and im every detuil to preserve the sae method and neainess. ‘The culinary department of this institutioa is also conducted by Sisters and the fare is extremely fru- gal. Good bread, white aud brown; meat aud vege- table soups, potatoes, rice and molasses, with a lew ap articles of diet, comprise the bili of fare. No “a Or coffee is allowed on the premises. Last sum- mer notwithstanding the crowded condition of the asyinm, the vitiated state of the atmospaere and the great dimculty attendtug veutilation, not a single case of iliness occurred.
