Mr. George T. Hammond, oue of the mounted Inspectors of customs, was spend- ing the evening at William Clarke’s house. Having heard several pistol shots tired, and thinking Captain Selkirk’s family would be alarmed at it he (wiihout knowing the cause of the firing) went through a side door to Captain 8.’ house and told Mrs, Thornham not to be Irightened, as it was a party of men firing for amusement. Mra. Tnornbam said 1t was not 50; ‘that they were robbers, and that one of them was at the time hiding behind the fence. Hammond asked 4f they had any arms in the house. Mrs. said they had nox, aad requested Mr. H. to go and inform Cap- tain Joseph Cooper that there were robbers around. He-went out to comply with her request, and had only passed the door when he was fired at. He then ran wwards Mr. Clarke’s house, and fell at the steps, wounded through beth legs. While Mr. hammond was at Captain Selkirk’s house three of the robbers had enicred Mr, Clarxe’s, where they found Mrs. Clarke and her children. They aeked her whcre"were the men. INTERESTING TO GATTLE RAISERS AND BEEF EATERS. ‘The So-Called Texas Cattle Plagne—Report of the Ohio State Commissionors. ‘The commissioners appointed by the Governor of ‘Ohio to investigate the causes, <c., of the cattle plague in Texas have made vhcic report, from which we take the following points of interest:— Concerning the essential nature of the disease it may be stated that the blood secms always to be SS involved. Microscopic investigations have revealed the presence (in the blood) of aminute fungus, or more properly the spores of such ‘Tne spores have aiso been found in the bi less extent) of heaithy Texas cattle; but they not been found in the blood of our native cattle. Whether the spores are the cause or the result of the disease, or are merely a concomitant, remains to be demonstrated.
