SANDWICH ISLANDS. After Walrases and Catching Whales—Ua~ certainties of Whaling=Lively Times in Howolulu Account of the Reciprocity Newo- Gations at Washington—The Coolie System— {usurrection iz Koua—The Aretic Tracers Ceavulsions of Natares HonouULy, Oct. 90, 1868, ur fall season opened on the 20th instant by the Arrival of six whaling vessels, bringing not enly fair but good reports from the Arctic feet. Very litte ‘oi! was taken im the Arctic until about the 20th of August. At this time ships were becoming thinned ‘out, several having been squared away for the right Wwuaie ground on the Kodiak, their captains being Batisfed that the season was broken up; others had Motermined to try their luck at walros oll and Bquared away for a well known resort of the ‘wairus. Upon reaching Blossom shoal a thick fox enveloped them and held them at bay for time, and when the fog lifted they were sur- rised to find whales in abundance upon afl points of he compass, The slaughter at once commenced, and in a few days captains who thought they would be fortunate if they secured a Uitle walrus oil jad from 800 to 1,600 barreis of Polar ofl, with je accompanying bone, As far as known two ves- 's have been lost, the American ship Corinthian i the Hawaiian bark Hae Hawaii. No person unacquainted th the business and with our city could realize the phange which has been wrought py the arrivai of the lew vessels, showing beyond the shadow of a doubt he dependénee whieh our community place upon he whaling fleet which twice @ year visits our arbor. + Sunce the sailing of the Idaho, C. C. Planters and merchants whose balance shects do not make them nervous aPout the future are constrained to say that there ig much in the letter which cannot be gain- kaid. The writer's first proposition—that since the Reciprocity treaty was first talked of the desire for Annexation had weakened and American influence ‘a4 onthe wane—seems to have confirmation from he fact that Americans couid be found to uphold tuster Harris at the expense of the editor of the en vtiser, Who has always been the stanch and unwavering champion of American Interests, It is grongn there that Harris has given up all hones of réaty, but wished to give his friend Smith a panies to visit Washington at the public ox NSC; ence he inftmated to the planters the destrablenes: a petition to send forth another aggnt to secure ie advantages he had gained, aud the dear public ie ded to his wishes, * The Gezelte is trying to refate the statements of the opposition press on the wrongs of the cvolig sys- tem, but makes * headway. Traders intendin, _ make @ basiness of it {rom year to year shoul meunber that it will pay best to be hones!. The on hycd are easily duped, but when they find jt out fer Bis remember by whom it is done, and the ns litte game is up. The natives want rum, soa the traders give i to them and in exchange get ivory and whalebone and sometimes furs. As sain- ples of sharp practice | heard of kegs to outward appearance five gallons capacity, but so con- structed as to hold but two; again, of a cask of water stained Prgaed shown to ” natives, and when the} wanted sample it a glass of rum was tendered, which, rea with their approval, their containers were ililed with the colored water aud their trade of ivory taken in exchange, This game will not do to try more than once, and the worst I can wish the perpetrators is that they might be wrecked on the coast and suffer the hardships which some innocent parties may have to suffer for their rascality, The fur stations on the Islands of St, Pani and St. George's have made furs fly the past year. Under the restrictions put upon traders, when the islands were uuder the Russian government, but 104,000 far seal skins per year Wore taken from these islands, and the market was fully supplied ana prices kept up. The American companies have taken off over 225,000 skins, and the probable result will be that the market will be giutted and prices will fall. But this is not the oniy evil. ‘Two or three years of such havoc wiil drive the seals from the islands, It is vo-y unuch like Kiliimg the goose that laid the gold- | cu eg, ‘The British ship Robert L. Gales, tidal phenomesa and earthquakes are still the order of the day. On the 29th and Joth of Sep- tember two sttarp shocks of earthquake were felt on Hawaii, differing somewhat from others experienced herefofore, in that a peculiar rushing sound was heard overhead. ‘The next day at Panda wave came in at the village of Kahanaioa and swept away the chureh, fences and oe houses, besides invading dweliing houses and causing much damage. On the 3d the Island of Katial was visited by a severe gale. At Lihue the sugar cane fields suffered from the cane being broken and throwa down, At Koloa the sca swept away the wharf and did other damage. At Waimea houses were prostrated and the stone church edilice considerably damaged. s the smallpox prevails to a considerable extent n Fiancisco, and it will be almost impo-=sible to escape a visitation of it here, the government have resolved to make vaccination compulsory and have the whole pupulation revaccinated, ‘Two sugar plantations have been put under the hammer ately, both situated on the island of Hawai. The Onoulinut plantadon at Kealakeakua sold for $41,500; the Kailua plantation at Kailua for $5,000. ‘The prices at which the crews of whaleships have been paid off for oi! and bone have been fixed pus the Umted States Consul at the foilowing rates:—Sperm oil, per gallen, 93 cents; whale oil, 48 cents; Califor- nia coast oll, 40 cents; ‘Aret halebone, per pound, 50 cents; Ochotsk do., 47 cents; Kodiac do,, 44 cents, A large number of ‘the whalers to visit’ here this fall will fit for home, among which I learn of the fol- lqgwing:—The President, - Nautilus, Java, Three others, Reindeer and Islander. The Ceylon, of Brewer & Co.'s Boston line, 18 the only merchant. man loading oll for Eastern ports. The American whaling ship Corinthian and Hawatian whaling bark Hal Hawaii were both lost in the Arctic Ocean. ‘The oil and bone ot the former were saved by the George Howland; the latter will prove a totai loss. Later accounts from jawali say that another at- tack had been made upon the rebels under Kaona, and that the government force had been defeated, losing another man, Kaona and his followers swear thatthey will not surrender the land upon which they have squatted. It is said that # prominent native, formerly a mem- ber of the Legislature, andyan influential white man are aiding and abetung the rebeis, ‘The foreigners in the district reruse to head a force against the rebels, and the natives do not seem to care which side wins. Reports from the whaling fleet say that the newly invented whaling gun, Plerce’s, is % great success. Forster, the Diree- tor of the Royal Observatory of Berlin, has recently published an article stating that science has been materially benefited and promoted by the reports of the many scientific expeditions apropos of tne late solar eclipse. In order to investigate the proiuber- ances of the sun it will not henceforth be necessary to wait for @ conjunction of the celestial bodies, . An interesting antiquarian discovery has just been made in Hanover, Germany. Some soldiers in dig- ging a trench at Hudesheun found abont fifty vases, cups, candelabra and other objects in massive silver and richly chased; they are evidently the work of Greek artists, and ‘apparently date froin the tine of Augustus. Among them ts a goblet with orn ments in relief representing Hercules strangling two serpents, and asecond with satyrs, baccianies and ot ier simular figures, The Messenger of the Don states that for 2 long time past the vintage had not Leen so abundant in Russia as in the present year, The cultivators are afraid that they will not have time to terminate the gathering before the coll weather sets in. Grapes at Razdory are at an exceedingly low price, selling at from five to ten copecks (about a cent each if per poud of thirty-four pounds, The market of No- vorcher Kassk is encumbered daily by hundreds of carts laden with the fruit. The venerable Professor J. H. Madier, at Bonn, celebrated for charts of the moon prepared in con- a with William Beer (brother of Meyerbeer, he composer), has written a letter which treats on the disappearance of one of the craters observed on the moon. Thou, at te old astronomer has been for some time near! et this discovery, which ‘will re alpen hsery ot ‘these charts, interests him so much that he has published the letter above allude ed to, The gradnal disappearance of this crater, which is called Linne, has been observed and vouched for by several eminent astronomers in different parts of the world. A successful operation of the transfusion of biood was recently performed hy Dr. Be 0 Albanese at the hospitat of Palermo, Sicily. A youth, aged seven- teen, named hye od Ginazzo, of Cinisi, was re- ccived at that esteblishment on the 29th of Septem- ber last with a bad humor on bis leg, which m_ the end rendered amputation necessary, the patient being very much emaciated and laboring under fever. The 07 ton reduced him toa worse state than ever and it became apparent that he was fast sinking, the pulse being tinperceptible, the eyes dull and the body cold. In this emergency Dr. Albanese had recourse to the transfusion of blood as the only remedy that had not yet been tried. Two assistants of the hospital offered to have their veins opened for the purpose, and thus at two diferent intervais 220 grams of blood were introduced into the patient’s sys- tem. After the first time he recovered the faculty Mot h and stated that betore he could neitner see nor hear, but felt as if he were flying in the air.
