MURDER. Final Scenes in the Triat=Demeanor of the Prixouer apon Receiving Senteace of Twenty Yours’ Imprisonment. We have aiready announced by telegraph the ren- dition of a verdict of guilty of mansiauguter in we case of Samuel M. Andrews, charged with the mur- der of Cornelius Holmes, tried at Plymouth, Mass., and the sentence of the prisoner to twenty years’ imprisonment. The following particulars, giving ‘the closing acenes of the case, are furnished by the Plymouth correspondent of the Boston Heraid, under date Devember &—i1 P. Py. 3 Justice Chapman “commenced Bis.cearee t0 the jury at utes of eight o'clock to-night, at ten mi about an hour for its return, the Ohi his assoctates returned to their quarters at the Samo- set House. and the assemblage in the court room algo gradually dispersed. Shortly before one o'clock information was despatched to the hotel to the effect bo ve. jury was peared to render a verdict, =. onan, e- sare Mo LC Court House, Andrews, appeared and took his seat in his face w rug ved look of indifference which was remarked fhout the trial, During the in- terval previous oe ithe appearances of the jury in court he became quite tative, however, as man whose life hung in the balance naturally would. Not more than persons were in the courtroom at midnight, and these remained until the proceed- ings were concluded. ‘rhe jury returned at mwaeiy- iive minutes of two, having been out nearly five hours, and, after answering thelr ames, were asked if they had agreed upon a verdict, An affirmative reply was returned, and the sonata eee announced that they had found the prisoner, Samuel M. An- drews, guilty of mansiaugnt great satisfaction to The verdict apparentl: care the prisonar’s counsel, ars to the accused, and after a brief interval Districts Attorney Allen moved that the prisoner be sentenced without delay. Chief Justice Chapman inquired if the counsel for the defence desired any time, and a negative reply being returned the Court went out for consultation. Only @ few minutes wee occupied in reaching an agreement upon the sentence, and upon the return of the Court Mr, Whitman, the Clerk, was instructed to announce to the prisoner the sentonce, which was “owenty years’ confinement in the State Prison of Chariestown—the first day to be soiltary and tle residue at hi labor.” On the verdict of manslaughter, d@ severe a gen- tence—the highest known to the law—was not anti- cipated; but the prisoner remained seated with Lis customary stoical indifference. Messrs. Somerby and Davis, his counsel, now conversed with him cheer- fully, and gradually the spirits of the condemne man revived until he smiled at some of the remarks that were made; and when k fone oorespondent bade him farewell in the lobby of the Court Hause he ap- peared to be quite lively and weil pleused at the mau- ner in which the case had resulted, ‘The jurors were now gelieved, and at fifteen minutes of two o’cleck A.M, the Supreme Judicial Court adjourned without day. From the verdict returned by the jury it will ap- eur that the alleged insanity of Andrews had no uafivence upon their minds, and that his story of the attempted committal of an unatural crime received consideration in the making up of the verdict. How the Court considered the matver may be judged from the severity of the sentence ordered. Andrews was remanded 10 the Plymouth House of Correction, adjacent to the Court House, previous to being committed to the State Prison at Charlestown, whither ie w a je removed ia a few days.
