FINANCIAL At ND COMMERCIAL. Sunnay, Nov. 22, 1543. The week closed upon an eventful period in the History of Wail street, The excitement a portion of the Lime was of ig most intense nature and the Prices of cert stocks vibrated with the wiidest irregularity. The orcasion of tits disturbance of Values and of the commotion which it produced was the sequel to the recent “locking up” combination to make money stringent and demoralize the stock Mst, It scems that one of the principal parties to ‘his scheme, an ex-director of the Epie Railway, quarrelied with his confederates after entering so far into tveir plans as to contribute a million of dol- Qars out of four millions which he promised to ad- ‘wance in carrying out the project for producing a tight money market. Either inside or outside of this combination be had put out contracts to sell “short”? 20,000 shares of Erie and lad sold ‘“calls*® for 40,000 more. Out. of revenge his late confederates deter- muined to “corner” him, Accordingly on Saturday aiternoon last they “covered” their own “shorts,” and before he could learn their stratagem or make headway against it they had run the price of Erie up to 52, AMuirs stood in this condition until the be- ginning of the week. In the meantime he ao fur humiliated himself as to beg for mmercy. Finding that he could obtain none he insti- pated or pariicipated ina motion for an injunction to restrain the directors of the Erle Company from wpsing the fund of the corporation for any purpose ‘Whatsoever. The clique, however, were too smart Forhim. Suspecting that such would be his next Move they had quietly obtained an order making one f thetr own number receiver of the affairs of the @ompany. Foiled in this direction, he made a des- pPerate evort to purchase the stock at the then mar- \Ket price, in hopes of saving as much as he could from the coming destruction. His enemies then ob- ‘tained o supplemental order, authorizing them to ‘withdraw as much of the stock as had been over- ued, tive effect of which, were it acted upon, was ‘to send the price of Erie up to par. This last stroke ‘wastoo much for him. The “corner” culminated on Thursday, when he capitulated with the best race he could, selling his contracts at a loss of bout twenty dollars per share. The clique were Mow overloaded with the stock and the ex-director Bawachance for revenge in turn. They had pur- ‘phased it all the way from 35 to 62, and the great alk of it in the vicinity of 55. It was easy to de- Mmoralize the strect on the subject of Erie ter the fraudulent character of the opera- which the clique resorted to origi- gpaly iu their attack upon the market. aA sudden hue and cry was raised against Erie and ‘it is now almost without quotation. A petition has ‘een numerously signed asking its expulsion from Ahe list at the stock board until it is properly regis- ered in some trust company or responsible banking ‘house. Although this disparagement of Erie origi- ated with one of the parties to the quarrel and was Anstituted for selfish motives, the public is likely to ‘De the gainer—another proof of the felicitous results Springing out of the disagreement of rogues. Erie 4s now where it should be—in the hands of the clique ©f swindling stock gamblers, who were too dishonest ‘€o confine themselves within the legitimate strategy “of the street, and had to resort to fraud to accom- #piish their designs, The stock in their hands has @lready fallen from 55 to 41, and will go still lower if the honest dealers of Wall street will continue their 4etermination not to have anything more to do with At until the transfer books are removed from the @tock gamblers’ ofice and placed in some public ‘Danking Louse open to inspection. To make good heir losses by this fallin the stock the clique will e forced to retire the over issues, when they Will virtually confess the fraud which they have Practised on the stockholders and on the Public in general. They are desperate in their @forts to get rid of the proofs of their crime and suddenly turned “bulls” on Friday and Saturday, with a view of getting rid of the stock. For this purpose they begged and borrowed all the money ‘within their reach, and rendered the banks as rich 8 they could at the close of the week. ‘This favor- able aspect of the money market fatled to induce Speculation. So many have suffered by the “break’’ ‘an-stocks and the absence of tone in the stock mar- ‘ket, and so many are profiting by their example that yextreme caution is the rule among operators, The ‘Week closed upon a dull market in consequence. Gold was active in the early portion of the weck @hrough a “squeeze” produced by the clique, who made a movement in the precious metal at the same @ime that they forced the “corner” in Erie. The ‘rice went up as high as 137, when they “unloaded,” westoring the price to dulness in the vicinity of 34%. Atthe close last night there was a further Gecline to 124\x, the market being weak on account of the sales of government treasure, to begin to- ‘Morrow (Moaday). ‘Was as follows:— ‘The range of gold for the week Ht _— is Loves. . 13535 Money was easy throughout the week, the rate ®Meing seven for Monday, six and seven for the mid- ‘Mie of the week end five and six for theclose. The @reckly statement of the banks is very favorable. Against an increase in legal tenders of $12,133,261 and in deposits of $3,959,751 there 1s an increase of only $2,971,524 in loans, willie the specie reserve is Ancreased by the sum of $1,178,145. The totals are compared with those of the previous week as foi- lows:— November 14. November 21, + $249,119,539 663, . 153 . 34,195,068 184,110,240 + 51,406,093 63,599,944 This condition of monetary affairs is encouraging @orthe business of the ensuing week. The large in- Crease in legal tenders and deposits shows the return of the money which the Erie be employed for Sheir speculations and which they have now ex- ‘Changed fur the load of stock at present in their @afes. There is a1s0 a vast quantity of money usually ‘Invested in stucks unemployed in consequence of the @emoralized condition of the market. There was a strong market for United States Securities in the latter portion of the week, and the Wovernment board was the busiest of the street. A ly and healthy investment demand was stimu- Mated by the unreliable nature of stocks, and by an ‘@dvance of five-twenties in London to 74g and in W®rankfort to 79. Prices closed firm on Saturday @ight as follows:—United States 6's, 1881, registerod, (914% a 115; do., coupon, 114% a 115; do., 5-20's, re- , 107 & 1074; do., 6-20's, coupon, 1862, 111%) a 113g; do., 5-20", coupon, 1864, 10734 @ 107%; do., 20's, CoNPON, 1865, 107% @ 10774 ;"do., 5-20's, coupon, ew, 1895, MOM @ 11094; do., 5-20, coupon, 1867, 'B10% 011014; do., 5-20's, Coupon, 1868, 11034 a 110%; o., 10-40", registered, 104 & 104\¢; do., 10-40'a, cou- n, 10544 a 105%. The stock market was variable within narrow lim- Sts at the end of the week, Some activity was cre- ated in Rock Island and Michigan Southern by a sus- Picion that the clique would next attempt @ move- Mentin them. Toledo was active and touched i001 ©p account of a report that the road was to be con- @olldated with the Michigan Southern. A movement as also attempted in New York Central by the Clique, and the price suddenly advanced to 129 on Thursday, but quickly receded when it was Wiscov- ered that they had been completely baMed in an at- tempt to open the books and thus transfer stock to Their account against the annual election, which @omes of December 9. The following were the clos- fing prices at five o'clock on Saturday evening:—New Mork Coutval, 12334; Erle, 4054 9 40%; Michigan Gouthern, 80%; Wabash, 67% a 57N%; Rock Island, 206% a 106%; Reading, 933% bid; Pacific Mail, 11614 ‘Dia; Northwestern, 843¢ 86; Northwi ‘n preferrea, Paul, 0414 bid; Pittsburg, 66% bid; Qhio and Mississippi, 805%; Toledo, 90%.
