FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Torspay, Nov. 17—6 P. M. ‘The day has been another remarkable one in the Aistory of Wall street. The fiuctuations in the stock market have not been so Violent nor the volume of Dusiness so large as on yesterday, but the feeling ‘was one of contiqued éxcitement, especially during the afternoon, when the news reached the street of renewal of the Erie Railway war in the courts. Erie and gold were again the features of business, The former dropped from 54, the opening price, to 47, but rallied late in the afternoon to 49a 50, Gold opened at 13674 and settled to 134% before the ad- Journment of the board, ‘The rival specuiators in Erie are again litigants. The one party, after suffering great loss at the bands of the other, have had recourse to the aid of the law. At appears that Mr. Daniel Drew, an ex-director of the road, was “cornered” in a short speculation, a3 ‘well as a number of banking houses doing business on foreign account, who, through what they believed © be anticipatory news of the vaiue of Erie, a8 quoted at the London Stock Exchange, were tempted to sell “short.” Such is one of the many versions on the street, Indeed, the whole atmosphere of Wall street was rife to-day with ali sorts of rumors concernisg the movements and operations of the various parties (0 the transactions in this famons stock. ‘The situation 1 80 confased and the smoke of tle contest yet £0 dense upon the battle fleld that It is very difileult to get a satisfactory view of the real condition of afairs + 4m the truce whicli the courts have suddenly de- clared. Enough is seen, however, to show that the speculations of the last month have been on a gigan. ttc seale, such as never were equailed before in Wail street, while it is doubtful if they have been sur- Passed elsewhere. Millions of dollars have been hand.ed as if they were thousands, and the capital employed has been such os to make the outside public gape with astogishment at the daring and boldness of the operat During the day an injanction waa sued out in Supreme Court, before Judge Suther- land, restraining the directors of the Erie Railway from doing anytling further toward the Issue of new stock and enjoining them from disturbing any of the pape: yunts or moneys of the corporation, It was 4 upon the application of Mr. August Bel- mont, who is the possessor of four thousand shares, the value of which he alleges is likely to be dépre- ciated by reckless management on tie part of the aforesail directors. The application 1s supported by the affidavits of Mr. Francia Work and Mr, Daniel Drew. The latter makes a clean breast of his connection wit movement last wiuter, in which he gut out of the “corner” prepared for him by Mr, Vanderbilt, and acknowledges that he Joined the great Broad street clig formed for the purpose of jocklag up greenbacks,” aud contrivated a million dollars for that object, which he subsequently with- dpe It is a curious turn of fortune that he should find himself now in the very predicament he wasju Jast winter, but with his former allies for his bitterest enemies. Mr, Belmont appearsiu the litigation, it is Build, as the representative of the foreign houses wiio sulfered from the rise in Erie engineered on Sa:ur- day night and Monday. Such is the aspect of affairs on the losing side of the battle, for a battle it Was and is between financial giants. Of the strategy on the other side nothing is positively known out- side of their own camp. It is rumored, however, ‘that in anticipation of such a step on the part of Mr. Belmont and Mr. Drew the directors themselves, or #0 many of them as are privy to the alleged speoula- tave use of the funds and stock of the corporation, secretly applied for and obtained four days ago te eppointment of a receiver from their own ranks, the Person selected being, the report further says, Mr. Jay Gould. It 13 also said that to put as much money as possible beyond the clutches of the law in case an injunction should issue seven millions of gold have been transferred across the Hudson to Jersey City, thus placing it beyond the Jurisdiction of the New York courts. On the other hand it is asserted that the losing party intended to Bue out an injunction, if they did not acwually try to do so, in the United States courts, so as to reach thé Sands if they were so removed. The effect of these proceedings was to distract the ‘Whole stock market and prices were wildly irregular for a time, but without the wide fluctuations of yea terday. Erie opened on the street in the early morning at 53 a 54, but declined to 52 before the first Doard. At the open board it was quoted between 61 and 52, and thence steadily declined until the frst Nush of the news of legal proceedings, when it dropped to 47, with offers at 43, seller thirty, It ‘went up and down during the afternoon between 47 and 49 until it assumed something like steadiness in the vicinity of the latter figure at four o'clock. The rest of the list, sympathizing with Eric, weakened with it proportionately and recovered in the same degree. Erie became firm towards the close at 49, on the strength of snspiciona that the @lique contemplated, before they were served ‘With the injunction, cancelling bonds or stock, and thus to give cause for another “bull movement. When the injunction had been served this firmness continued, under the tmpression that there would be e@scarcity of cash stuck, owing to the large quantity locked up by the legal proceedings, and hence there ‘Was a difference of one to two per cent between Teguiar and seiler—three transactions. Late in the evening an operator on the street, suspected of bo- ing in the Drew interest, was freely olfering w buy Erie at 50, with the privilege, however, of selling i back at 45 within three days. Gold opened at is6% and up to 136%, end thence declined, at times quite rapidiy, to 104). ‘The iall jed to a reaction, and the price closed in the Toom at 134);, subsequent to which there was a rive ¥0 1342/, and adeciine by five o'clock to the Snai quotation, 1543; a 134%. The attempt to keep up ihe “eorner” was a failure for several reasons. In the first place, gold is not so easily controled as green- backs. The temptation of a bigh price induces sales by outsiders, while tie metal leaks 9 mysteriously from anexpected sources. This fact, together with ihe necessity of putting the precious metal ont of the reach of the injunction, compelied the ciique to “unicad, and gold was ateadiy poured upon the market from whe Dgure 136'; downward. The story that eeren mil- Hons were carried over to Jerecy City to-day thus Beems to gather probability. The loaning rate was from 1-5 to 5-4 for borrowing bejore Clearing House time, after which loans were made at fat and at 1-64. The gross eleavings a) the Gold Exchange Bank were $16,004,000 cod the gold balances $2,951,845.
