8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIA ——— ‘MOND: lov. 16—6 P, M, Today has been s very excited one in Wall street ‘and revives reminiscences of the great Harlem and “prairie Dog” ‘corners and the Atlantic Mall “drop.” The eatures of business were gold and Erie, upon wiose manipulation hinged the doings of the wnole dsy. Erle, after the sudden advance of Saturday ght and through an utter absence of any Knowledge upon which to base its value, fluctuated violently between 483, and 61. In gold the bulls pro- Guced a “squeeze” even more severe than that which ‘was experienced about six weeks ago. The price was ren up to 137, rather than pay which some of the ‘shorts’ borrowed gold at the exceasive interest of one per cent per day. ‘Tae transactions on the street in the half-hour be- fore ten o’clock were wildly irregular. Erie, which concentrated the earliest business, epened at 63 a 4, but was rapidly run up tol. H ow much of that pecuilar process known as ‘‘washing’’ was doue it 4s impossible to say, but that it was practised during ‘ths day is freely charged. Recourse to such bogus gaics show. how demoralizing is the tendency of specu- ation. Atthis latter highest figure those “long” of the stock began to unload, and, although there were tmtermediate sudden and large reactions, the price had descended to 4834 by one o'clock tn the after- moon. 8 far as it is possible to discover through tho eonfusion of the hour, and as near as may be gath- ered from tke dozen flying rumors that agitate the street, it appears that the recent great eombination of ‘bears’ who 680 successfully broke the market by a steady and persistent effort ‘Decame disintegrated, as all large bodies will when there comes a division of the spoils. Hence, after the compact, which kept them together so long, had Deen fulfilied by the running of Erie down to the ‘Vicinity of 35, a amall faction parted company and Joined with an ex-director of the road, who, as well as snamber of “bear” houses, were discovered to be “short” of the stock, This condition of things afforded a fine opportunity for a nice little piece of @nancial strategy and revenge. The great clique en- tered into an alliance with the Northwestern party, offensive and defenaive, covered on both stocks and gent the prices of Erie to a figure which produced the utmost consternation, uf it has not so affected gome houses as to create apprehensions for their stability. Two failures are reported already, and ‘two or three more are whispered on the street. One failure was of a small stock-broking firm, doing business on the “wild-cat” system of very small Margins. Their bankruptcy has embarrassed one of the members of the open board, who was indirectly @onnected with them. Stocks were bought in for him under the rule, but his insolvency # not as yet asserted, The cause of the tailure was @ ‘‘short” ‘venture in New York Central. The alllance, although eminently successful in advancing Erie, was not so successful with Northwestern, which remained stubborn in the vicinity of 8 @ 87. The im- petus given to Erie reached the rest of the stock list at the session of the first open Doard at ten o'clock, Ahe transactions embrac- fmg about 80,009 shares, nearly one-half of which ‘were Erie. The dealings in New York Central and Erie together constituted one-half of the business of ‘Mhe session if not of the whole day. The “bulls,” «who benefited so largely by the change of tactics on tae part of their late opponents, the great bear @ique, were jubilant in the extreme. From the fact ‘That no new contracts for “short” sales of Erie were pat forth during the day it is evident that the com- ination are “long” of the stock again at the de- elined prices of the afternoon, or intend abandouing & for the present. The feeling in the Gold Room was hardly leas ex- @ited than in the stock market over a “aqueeze” Produced by a “locking up” of gold by the same par- ties, as far as can be ascertained, who so success fully tiled up currency a month ago. It seems to be Mhesame kind of strategy transferred to a different Meld of operations They bezan last Friday w buy gud put away gold, just at the time, it will be re- membered, that new threats of locking up green- backs broke the stock market and gold was *heapest. The frat effect of this withdrawal was te& on Saturday, when the price hardened and closed at the highest figure of the week. Gold opened on the strees at 18654, With sales aa high ag 106% before the regular eommencement of business, It opened in the room at 135%, and an attempt to “unload” at this figure yan down the price so snddenly that the parties in eontro! discontinued selling, which they could well afturd to do, as the preimium was still one per cent better than when they bought, while for the cash meta! they were obtaining interest at rates varying from one-eighth to three-fourths of one per cent per diem. The effect of this strategy was witnessed in the subsequent rige of the premium during the after- noon until it touched 37, the highest point It attained @uring the day. The raage in price is shown in the « 188% 130% + 13T 136% 136%; Subsequent to the adjournment the boaru dealings were continued until half-past five o'clock, when the quotation was 1304 @ 1964. The “squeeze? Produced so much scarcity of cash gold tat borrowers paid as high as one per @ent per day in the room, while transactions ‘on the street are reported as high as one and one- quarter. One-eighth was vid at five o'clock for ‘tomorrow. These high rates show a belief on the part of the “shorts” that the premium will come down wittln a day or two, and hence their willing- ess to pay such extravagant interest In preference t covering at the present high price. The gross eicurings at the Gold Exchange Bank wore §177,- | 434,000, the gold ances $6,064,052 and the currency Daiances $9,817. Money was easier than it bas been any day this Month, and perhaps si the beginning of October. | ‘The banks were freely offering it at seven per cent, and the ouiside quotation was 6 @ A few ex- eeptional joans are reported at jive to best houses @n prime collateral, There was a little more doing in commercial at 9a 12 per cent discount for prime double-name paper, running three to five month Foreign exchange was without definite quotation, owing to We high rates obtamed for lending guid. CURRENCY RESERVE. To THe Epirors OF THR BOSTON DalLy ADVBR- TISBR:— Ta is no doubt a great evil that a few unscrupulous peaks shouid bave the power to disorganize the to the extent wit- }; but the evil is not likely t0 be remedied by any such expedient as {he contemplated reserve of currency to be held by the fevernment against interest-bearing certifieates and liable to be drawn out in an omerrency. Some ob- Jections to such a ecneme are'very obvious. First—If the government is to hold the money subject to tmmediate call it will be paying interest for money which it cannot use, and adding another item to expenses which are e alzeady much heavier than the country can easily Second—Such a reserve, fund, onde established, might, by creating a fancied security against such crises as the present, aggravate the very evil it was intended to ayert; for people who had confidence in the efficacy of the scheme would run risks and go to extremes which they would never think of unless they felt sure beforehand of relief in case of need. The English exchequer blils do not furnish & an in point. These bile are issued by the English ernment becanse ft wants money and not to pro oct the community from the sharp practice of dishonest speculators, And English bankers invest in them i as they do in commercial bills. They differ only in that the. former are safer and in times of strin- gency are more readily convertible by rediacount or rs but not by redemption on demand. The true remedy for the present state of things must be sought, not in shallow expedients which do ot touch the real cause of the evil, but in # thor- ough change of our monetary system, which be ig itself the great cal cause of our troubles. The opinion of Associate Justice Willard refusin; the application for a writ of mandamus to compel the president and directors of the Bank of the State of South Carolina to deliver the assets of the bank to Governor Scott is published.
