FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wepweapay, Oct. 23-6 P, M. ‘The monetary stringency has increaved rather than @iminished to-day, and loans were generally made of rates varying from seven per cent per annum in old to %4 per cent per diem fu currency, although In some instances lenders refused to receive more than the legal rate in currency a8 a matter of principle, Dut the uselessness of the usury laws ip preventing more than a fixed rate from belng charged for money is very apparent, At the Clearing House this morning the Bank of the Commonwealth was creditor $2,402,000, the Metropolitan $472,000, the Tenth Na- tional $230,000, the Third National $351,000 and the Central National $217,000, while the Bank of New York was debtor $817,000 and the Commerce $803,000; and these changes indicate a further locking up of currency, so that the purse strings are apparently betng drawn closer day by day, Thus it is that, not- withstanding the receipt of money from Boston, Philadelphia and other points, the supply of loana- bie fands at this centre 1s being gradually curtailed. It is somewhat remarkable that the money market all over the country should have passed from a con- dition of extreme case to one of extreme activity, and artificial influences are insufficient to account for the change, except to a very hmited extent, while the Western cities, where the strin- gency is very marked, may he supposed to be peca- Marly free from these. The Cincinnati and Chicago Journals express apprehensions that the movement of the pork crop almost simultaneously with that of the cotton crop will intensify the pressure felt in that section. The demand for discounts is fortunately light, as commercial paper, even of the best grade, 1s hardly negotiable, although It is nominally quoted at eight to ten per cent perannum. The con- version of three per cent certificates into currency by the banks can be a source of no great relief, as, although it gives an active for a dormant legal tender, it dees not increase the reserve of the banks, ‘while it involves a virtual contraction of the volume Of legai tenders outstanding, and at the same time reduces the currency balance in the Sub-Treasury, thereby making it necessary for the latter to replace the amount by sales of gold. There is considerable monetary stringency in Boston, and a journal of last evening, published in that city, thus refers to the eondition of affairs:— ‘The money market has been decidedly tighter to- day and borrowers whose wants were urgent have had to runabout pretty lively to accomplish their desires, The banks are all poor, as a rule, and many of them are borrowers themselves and unable todo anything in discounting even for their customers. This stringent condition of affairs is largely in con- sequence of the monetary disturbance in the New York market, good deal of money having been drawn there from this centre to the great reduction of the Boston bank reserve usually held at New York. Where so little is doing rates are a seconda- ry consideration, New York funds continue in ac- tive request. The gold market opened weak at 1344; and soon Geciined to 133%, but from this point it gradually advanced to 134%, and the closing transactions prior to the adjournment of the board at three o'clock ‘Were at 12435, following which the latest quotation ‘on the street was 134%; a 184%. There was a brisk borrowing demand for coin and loans were made “flat” and at 1-648 1-32 per cent per diem and 2a @percent per annum for borrowing. The gross clearings amounted to $84,630,000, the gold balances to $1,002,491 and the currency balances to $2,869,106, The Sub-Treasury disbursed $1,744 in coin in pay- ‘Ment of interest on the public debt and sold $300,000 4m coin, the bids for which amounted to $950,000, at prices ranging from 124 to 104 26-100, and the whole being awarded to Messrs, Henry Clews & Co. The stehmer Russia took out $188,700 in specie, The Suctuations during the day were as subjolned:— «134% 10:50 A. M. . 14% 133% «3 P.M.. 14% The stock market has been very fevert»h all day, and although tt rallied strongly in the afternoon, the improvement was afterwards lost and it closed ‘Weak and demoralized, the downward course of prices being accelerated by reports of a heavy fall in grain in the Western markets, and sympa- thetically to some extent on the Produce Exchange here. New York Central, after selling up to 1253 Felapsed to 1253¢, and Erle, which had rallied to 40% fel) back to 394, these being the most yielding of all the railway shares. A large amount of borrowed Erle stock was returned in new certificates this af- ternoon, and this quickened the demand for money, while the supposition that the funds re eeived from this source will be withdrawn from the banks or otherwise “locked up’ exerted anything but a reassuring effect. ‘The street is in dread of a heavy break in Erie, which ‘will carry the rest of the market with it, and money Jenders are consequently pursuing as conservative a course as they possibly can under the circumstances. Government securities show great firmness, consider- ing the diMculties in the way of carrying them, and prices improved % & % percent during the day: but after four o’clock the market was hammered and a fractional decline took place, After the Presidential election, however, these stocks will advance whether money becomes more abundant or not, for the invest- ment demand will be quickened both by Grant's elec- tionand the disbursement of the November interest on the public debt, amounting to neatly $30,000,000 in eoin, The dry goods auction sales held to-day were ‘well attended and the bidding was moderately brisk, although prices were not in all cases fully upto those of last week. A few lots were passed, while others were duplicated, and on the whole the result ‘was satisfactory. ‘The stock market was weak and unsettled at the commencement of business, but at the early session of the open board It was more steady ana Erie sold at 4014, New York Central 124% and Fort Wayne 113.
