10 ———- DEDICATION OF THE SEDGWICK HONUMERT. Agreeably & public announcement the monument So the memory of the late Major General John Sedg- ‘wick, United States Volunteers, was unveiled and polemply inaugurated yesterday afternoon at the Walted States Military Academy at West Point. At three o'clock P.M., amid a heavy and con- ¢inveus rain, which thoroughly saturated the walke ‘nd grags of the parade, aud the drops falling inces- tantly from the trees, the military portion of the procession formed, which included a battery of light artillery (of six guns), the bands of West Point, of Governor's Island and of the First United tates artiliery, combined a8 one grand musical com- pany of seventy instruments, which preceded the companies of cadets, nearly 300 of whom were under arms, commanded by Brevet Brigadier Gen- eral Pitcher. The entire procession, which included many disunguished gentlemen, some of whose names are historical, being placed in change of Major Geverai Wright, chairman of the committee of four generals, all of whom had served honor- ably i the Sixth corps, and entrusted by a formal resolution of Congress with the execution of the splendid statue, which will stand for all the future &@ memorial of one of the most be- Jove and heroic of the soldiers of the war for the preservation of the Union, At fifteen minntes past three the procession, which had formed on the southeastern side of the plain, recetved the signal to march, and tmmediately the soldiery proceeded down the westerly avenue towards the platform, arined with umbrellas, where the distinguisied guests were seated together with tue orator of the day aud the chaplain of the ost. Within & few feet was the monument, in the ex- treme northwesterly corner of the parade, opposite @ Fesidence of Col Black, Fg ge of the 200° fe corps adeis, and about tfrom the shaft erected to the memory of M ieneral Brown, and Which, until the prayer prepared for the occasion was read by she chap Dag, that fell in Al ihe close of the invocation was concealed by the national ful folds around it. Major General u, who durmg the lifetime of Sedg- wek had commanded the Third division of the Sixth Army Corps of volunteers, ad- vanced to the pediment of the novument, and amid tie profound silence of the spectators, who stood | with jeads uncovered, the cadets having previously formed in elose column, doubling on their centre, presented arms, the battery at the same time firving \.jreen guns, unveiled the statue, ‘The slatue is a splendid work of art. erfectly represents the man, It is of life size sanite Is placed oo @ pediment which, with the foundation, raises tie whole memorial to an altitude of about fil- teen feet. SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 21, 1804. Abiding by the result of the great international four-oared boat race in this city to-day, the United States are obliged to yield the championship of the World to the British provinces. The Ward brothers— those celebrated knights of the oar—have, strange as it may seem, been vanquished on American waters, ‘They have seldom, if ever before, been defeated; but in the famous St. Johns (New Brunswick) men they Nave found more than their match, This victorious crew, it will be recalled, is the same one which par- ticipated in the late international rowing match tn Paris, on which occasion, to use an expressive term, it ‘eat all creation,” and of course the assumed title of the champion four-oared crew of the world justly belonged to them until they found more than their equals, The Wards—Josh, Gil, Charley and Hen—rejoicing in the. distinction of the four-vared champions of America, sought to make themselves more famous in a profession which they have fol- lowed from boyhood, and they accordingly challenged the champions of the globe for a six mile race, the winning honors to be @ purse of $3,000 ($1,500 a side) and the championship of the world. The pro- vincial crew accepted and the race came off on the Connecticut river, nencnine this city, to-day, the Wards being backed by Charies A. Peverelly’ and Charles Moore, of New York, and the St, Johns crew by Charles E. Potter and Sherif James A. Harding, of St. Johns. A contest between two crews so celebrated, and each having 80 many confidents, of course exeited great interest among all admirers of aquarial exer- cises, and in fact —— the whole sporting frater- nity. ‘The citizens of the distant oven scouted the idea of baving the championship wrested from them, and the admirers of the Wards were not les modest fn asserung the certamty of their trump! petitive crews came in great numbers and from long Matance to witne the contest and to back ther respective opinions with numerons, and liberal wagers. Both crews arrived here a Week or more since and were accompanied or followed inuvediately after by their backers and friends. Notwithstanding the oarsmen had for a coupie of months been in training they have nevertheless made it a daily habit to apply themselves vigorously to the oar during their brief sojourn here previous to the race. ‘The erowds who came to the oity yesterday and to- day to witness the contest were Industriously eu- gaged in proclaiming their views upon the merits and demerits of the respective crews around the hotels, but there was very little if, in fact, any bet- tng until an hour or two ‘before the competitors ap- ared in their boats, Tho best explanation of this is, perhaps, the fact that there was considerabie delay in the choice of the referee, the backers of the Ward crew seemingly being the stumbling block to any selection which the others interested in the race could unite upon. This hitch in the arrangements intuenced many to believe that it was porsi ible the Wards intended to ‘throw the race,” and there are many who lost money on them who still cherisit this belief; but It is but fair to the defeated crew to way that those who profess to Know state that the contest was au honest one, and that therace was ia every respect honestly conducted, Wilbur Bacon, of New Haven, was the first man united upon for a referee; but it Was subsequently ascertained that he was in New York and could not reach here in time, and after some delay Charles F. Brown, of Newburg, N. Y., the stroke oar of the Yale University crew of 4866, Was chosen in his stead. The board of judges en mate up by the selection of H. Hashagnan, hoe, of Newburg, for the Ward crew, and Stephen King and Charles E. Potter, of St. dons, for the Provincial crew. Mr. Donohoe and Mr. Potter officiated at the upper stake and the other gentlemea at the starting pomt, ‘These and other pre cI reliminartes were ail completed at about two o'clock, aud at this moment the clouds, which had been threatening a demonstration all the day, made good their promise, to the exceeding dis- | pleasure of the thousands who were gathered along | lie shores of the river to witness the great inver- national boating contest of the age. Nearly all were | lortified with umbretias, however, and the unfortu nate ones who were not preferred a drenching rather than miss the straggie which they were so eager to witness, Without inuch delay the competing crews appeared, the provinclats coming first and the Wards soon after, and each being loudly cheered as ‘The St. Jobns crew was by far the most promising looking {a point of Inuscie and other qualities which go to make good oursmen, but when the past achieve- ments of the Wards was remembered their stock remained at par in spite of the superior physical ex- celience of their rivals. Their appearance was of course the signal for the sporting men along the banks to announce their opinions, and betting was at once lively ail throngh the crowd, Those who | believed in the ability of the St. Johns crew to win | Were the first to make a o,f Ly but they were unl- odds on their favo- nd equally shrewd to catch up any man who jutious not to offer lazing line of battle moved steadily on, seized the st fernss hurled him into the woods, ain! the battle of Fu | was won.
