NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1863—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Barunpay, Oct. 176 P. M ‘The gold market was heavy during tne early part @f the day and after opening at 136% the price de- @lined to 136%, but subsequently there was an ad- ‘vance to 13734 tm consequence of purchases to cover “short” contracts inftuenced by an advance in the Fates of interest paid for the use of gold. The im- Provement was not sustained, however, and the losing price prior to the adjournment of the Doard, at three o'clock, was 137, following which ere was no recovery, and the latest quota- ‘tion on the street was 13°% 8137. There was a very active borrowing demand for coin, and loans were made about noon as high as one percent until Mon- day, the “squeeze” being evidently, to @ great ex- tent, artificial; but after the clearings were made fwansactions were reported ‘fat.’ Tne rates paid for the use of coin until Monday varied as follows:— 8-64, 1-16, 5-04, 7-64, 34, 5-32, 3-16, 7-32, 332, M, 6, M, %, % and %. The volume of basiness was large, and the speculative transactions were almost en- tirely on the bear side. The gross clearings amounted to $117,907,000, the gold balances to $3,654,009 and the @urrency balances to $5,443,¢43, The bids for the $300,000 gold sold at the Sub-Treasury aggregated $3,125,000 at prices ranging from 136 to 137 15-100, and Lounsberry & Fansiiawe were awarded the en- tireamouat. The high rates which the bears are compelled to pay forthe use of goid with which to Make their deliveries has a tendency to check spec- ulation for a fall, as unless the premium declines from day to day toagreater extent than the per- eentage paid for borrowing there is clearly no profit for the bears, the rate which loans command being @guivalent toa corresponding advance in the pre- miu, The price fuctuated as follows at inter- 138% 1:26 P.M + 1365, 6:00 P. M The demand for goverument securities continued ‘BNabated all day, and prices experienced a further advance, The altered aspect of political affairs has strengthened confidence in the public credit, and tn- @uced those who before held back to enter the mar- Ket as buyers. There is@ great scarcity of regis- tered bonds reported, and the dealers are in conse- quence compelied to send coupon five-twenttes of the later issues to the Treasury to be transferred to 137% 37 the registered lst. On the Stock Ex- change there was @ somewhat irregular and exciied) market, especially for the railway shares, which have advanced the most rapidly during the last few days. Milwaukee and &t. Paul reacted sharply downward, and Fort Wayne Truled from one to three per cent lower than at the Close last evening. The latter fluctuated between 11934 and 116, and the former between 1:4 and 108 ‘These stocks are being manipulated by a well known ‘Wali street capitalist who is a director of the Mil- Waukee and St. Paul’ Company, and hence to a @reat extent their recent rapid advance. The quotations of the morning were Mot sustained in the afternoon, and an unsettled feeling succeeded the previous buoyancy. The State stocks, and especially Tennessee sixes, new, were strong and active at a further advance. Money was in good supply at six and seven per cent, and in ex- eeptional instances the leading dealers in govern- ment securities had balances left with them at five. The banks and trust companies ask seven per cent, however, and as they have on!y a limited amount of funds at their disposal they are indisposed to make loans below this rate, The discount line re- mains unchanzed, first class commercial paper, with from four to six montis to run, being in moderate Supply and fair request at the legal rate. ‘The statement of the associated bank: for the week shows a decrease of $1. 29 in legal fenders, $951,447 in loans, $159,477 1m eapecie and $173,411 1n deposits, and an increase of $25,815 In eireulation, The totals of the present aud last pre Vious statements are as subjolned:— Oct. 10, Oct, 17. 265,595 £204,614,135 % 18,60 of this city 188,840) 389 10,867 At the ten o "clock open board the stock market ‘Was sirong and active, and New York Central sold @t 120); Erie, 48°¢ a 487; Reading, 9055 a 9944; Michi- gau Southern, 90% a 01; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 91% a 9) Cleveland and Toledo, 100% @ 106%: Rock Island, 109 a 109; Northwestern, 974 @ 974; Go. preferred, 975 a 98',: Fort Wayne, 11745 @ 118%; Mitwaukee and St. Paul preferred, 113 @ 114; Ohio and Mussissipp!, 315% a 31%; Wabash, 66% a 6335; do. preferred, 79; Pacific Mail, 12845 @ 128%; Western Enion telegraph, 3 & 874s; Mariposa preferred, 2424; Canton, 613g a 51%; Boston Water Power, 164; Boston, Hartford and Erie, 28%; Alton and Terre Haute preferred, 66; Adams’ Bxpress, 52); Morehants’ Union Express, 23; Tennessee sixes, new fasue, Ti @ 724%; North Carolina sixes, new fssue, 67%. Below we give the exports and stocks for the week and also for the corresponding week of last season, as telegraphed to us by our own correspondents at the various ports to-night: Week ending -—-~Ezports-— Oct, 16, 1868, 1867, New Orleans. 12,102 1,793 Mobile... 800 = Charleston _ = 1,226 of 1,835 8,808 + 616,963 5,691 110,127 108,891 From the foregoing statement it will be seen that, compared with the correspoading week of last sea- son, there is an increase in the exports this week of 11,272 bales, while the stocks to-night are 1,236 bales more than they were at this time a year ago, A commercial weekiy thus refers to the dry goods trade in this city during the week:—The dry goois market for the week under review presents no salient feature to report, the political contest haviag greatly absorbed the attention of the mercan ile com- munity to the detriment of business activity. In staple cottons we have no tmprovement tu note, and the supplies being generally once more in excess of the demand prices have a weaker tendency, although in most instances there is no quotable change since our last issue. Manufacturers complain of the dl- minished rates realized on their products, espectilly on fabrics woven with cotton bousnt at extreme Prices; but it must be remembered that the rapid advance of the raw material during the last spring and summer placed them in a sound position to withstand the loss incur. red by this reaction in quotations, Jobbers are thus in no way to blame in trying to stimulate the demind by concession, as they cannot afford, with their enor- mous expenses, to stand idle; but it is to be hoped that with the advent of cold weather the demand for consumption will increi.3e so materially as to absorb the present accumulation, and thus prepare the way for aspring trade remunerative alike to manalac. turers, jobbers and deale-s, SALES AT THE MEW YDNC STIGK EXCINYE:. vr O t. 17—-10:15 A.M.
