INFANT MORTALITY. Naw Yonex, Oct. 15, 1868. To THs Eprror oF Tus HeRaLp:— + Inresponse to the communication of X., which in your iasue of this morning, relating to Subject of infant mortality in New York, @ sab- Ject which Dr. Stephen Rogers, of this city, so hically and truthfully laid before the public in paper read at the meeting of the County Medical Bociety of the 14tn of September, I beg you will per- Mit me to say, as a member of that society, that there is as yet no cause for the despera- fion which X. seems to entertain of any useful ction in that all-important matter on the part of the @ociety, Although the meeting alluded to by X, held on the 12th instant, for the discussion of Bho subj of that paper, was almost wholly by members of the Metropolitan and by the Papacennvasiven of other per socie ing to tue unnecessary, uncalied fod erly, not to say indecent attacks upon tie au- jor of that paper Tcan assure X, that the society lives, t whatever the hg may do at Cooper Institute the Medic: ‘tety of the pounty and city of New York has by no means ter- ted its labors in the areas fleld which Dr. Rog- per laid before it. White that meeting was adjourn quietly upon that disgusting exhibi- ion of passion and prejudice, thereby giving the waters of municipal administration time to le, let X. rest in the certainty that the soci“iy calm but determined purpose to continue the ttle it infanticide in ail its varied forms. And in order that tue HERALD may fuily compre- end the merits of this contest and may have an op- ees to exert its powerful influence for human- ity and for truth, If herewith send a copy of the sfed- Record for tue lst of October, which contains @ said paper. t A HORRIBLE W'FE MURDER, {From the Quincy (Ll.) Herald, Oct. 10,} Alstyne’s Prairie was the scene of a horrible tra- dy night before last, which resulted in the death of woman @t the hands of her husband, William M. ynard. He had a revolver which he soiemiy vowed he would use before he would go to jail, it S@ppears that after making his escape he immédiately Fepatrea to his wagon ou the prairie, at which place wife was, and taking a ride from his wagon shot er dead. He stated to persons who conversed with im atier the deed was committed that his wife was iiied by the accidental discharge of the rife while she was endeavoring to get iuto the wagon. He told ther stories of a contradictory nature, however, hich left no room for doubting that he committed the deed. ‘The old lady was killed about ten o'clock Stnight. The murderer, instead of calling an in- quest to be held on the body, threw it Into his wagon ‘aud started for his former piace of abode, Big Neck, @bout tw ney miles irom this city, at which place he arrived at daylight yesterday, morning.
