Perhaps no such safe and easy facilities for smug- gling are anywhere else to be found as the quaran- tine station of the port of New York presents. It has all the necessary advantages by rea- son of its character and location. It is protected by law from the impertiment visits of all others but the Health OMicer and his de- puties, and in the lower quarantine vessels hailing from ports in the sunny southern hemisphere, laden ‘with sugar, fruits, ram and precious brands of cigars, are as completely isolated from the outgide world as though they were in mid-ocean. It is easy ‘to perceive how feasible it becomes, espectally un- er cover of the night, to remove any number of cof- ‘Qns filled with cigars or water tanks filled with rum > @ snug abiding place on shore. During the recent quarantine season it was a sub Jecs of mot unfrequent remark at Port Monmouth that the Long Branch boat on her return trip to New York generally car- ried a large quantity of cigars besides something that wore the suspicious appearance of a disguised rum barrel, The primitive and simple-minded peo- ple of Port Monmouth never perhaps dreamt that the olgars and the rum might be contraband and were on their way to New York in defiance of the exeise and the Custom House authorities, or perhaps t satistied them to be told that some of the hotels at Long Branch were returning a portion of their sur- plus stock to the city. However, these easy-going villagers troubled themselves very little to inquire who owned the cigars and rum or whither they were ‘gol ‘The quarantine station on West Bank looks over at Port Monmouth from a distance of a few miles. The original source from whence the weed and the extract of inolasses came might ‘be presumed to be ‘the West Indian vessels in the jower here lying mightily conventent to West Bank. This is a very interesting subject of inquiry for the proper authorities, and will, no doubt, be attended to next season. ‘Then farewell to the faine of Port Monmouth. Last season a vessel from Havana came into quar- aniine uader the suspicion of the revenue detectives that she contained a large quantity of sm cigars. Interesting Partleulars of the Mysterio: Affair. Cem the Waterbury (Conn.) American, Oct. 15.) ¢ have obtained the following particulars in re- Yation to the murder of Appollos W. Ro, 9 at a from a relative the dec ry Bronson and Abbott left Piymouth and went to ‘est Haven, where the former was build. ing @ house, which was nearly completed. Abbott Ly been working for Bronson for several weeks. On Tursday night two weeks ago they went to New Haven together. At the Post OMice in that city Bronson received a letter, which Abbott suspected ope money, and on his asking the former what was w his letier, Hronson replied “none of your ‘business.’ Abbott knew Bronson was expecting some $400 about that time. After visiting one or two laces on business the two entered a basement sa- loon on Chapel street, where they took drinks. On leaving the saloon Bronson stated that as he had some business to attend to in the morning he would re- main in New Haven al) night, and instructed Abbott 4 what to do at the house, Then, according to Abbott, they parted and he went to West Haven alone. After this evening Bronson was not seen alive. On Wednesday Abbott made his appearance in West fHaven with his thumb badly cut, and wanted to Ddorrow money to pay for having it attended to. He told diverent stories in relation to the cut, telling some it was done while cutting wood, others while cleaning fish. On the day before Bronson’s death Abbott sharpened an axe and a carving Knife, neither of which can be found. On Thursday morning & man named Cook, a neigh- bor, W was going Lewes found Abbott out in the haroor with his (. ) boat, which he had taken witout leave, and for taking which he could give no satisiactory reason. On the afternoon of the same day another neighbor met him at the West Haven horse raiiroad waiting for the ear. He had on Bron- son's best coat and lad a large bundle in his possession, From thia place he went to Ply- mouth. It is nol known where he spent Thura- day night, Op Friday night he stayed at his wife's mother’s tn this city. He was seen going through Woterville with the same coat and bandie on Saturday, stopping at @ saloon in the village, Next he is found s home at Mount Toby, near Piymouth, Her remained working around home watt! last Friday, expressing frequent surprise at Kronson’s absence, When asked why he teft West Haven he repiied he di so in order to obtain some food. When it was found that all of Bronson's bedding was missing and he was asked what had become of it, he od that Bronson had burned it to destroy the vermin, A very unlikely story, as are others told by him. A week ago to-day Bronson’a body was found on the East Haven shore with tie skull broken in and a nomber of stabs in body and neck. At first the body was not known and after an i inquest it was buried.
