8 ne li AP A FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. SUNDAY, Oct. 11, 1868. ‘The gold market had a declining tendency during the whole of last week, owing to the persistent ope- rations of the bears, and sales were made after the adjournment of the board yeaterday as low a8 13774, although this price was bid at the close, The ex- treme fluctuations were limited to two and 3 half per cent, the highest polit touched having been 1403, ‘on Monday morning. The dally volume of transac- tions was large, and the current of speculation was gimost entirely for a fall, the purchases made being almost entirely to cover ‘short’ contracts. The mercantile community shared in the bearish feeling of the Gold Room, and, as usual, borrowed instead of Dought their gold for customs duties, and the pre- viously heavy “short”? interest was largely increased. On Satorday afternoon the speculators manufac tured a rumor, without the slightest foundation tn fact, to the effect that the Treasury would on Mon- @ay invite bids for five millions of gold, and for some time previously they had been discounting the effect of republican majorities in Pennsylvania at the elections on Tuesday. The consequence is that ‘when the actual result becomes known it will be @iscovered that it was over discounted and the premium will react upward. It Is needless to say ‘that the same men are “bearing” gold now who were “mulling” it at 150, and that no changes of a material eharacter have occurred in the meantime to cause ‘this wide fluctuation. There was nothing to justify ‘the advance to that point, and there has been little siuce beyond speculation to produce the de- cline. Both the rise and the fall have proved Gisturbing to trade and a grave public evil by un- settling values, and the only gainers have been ‘the speculators, who would like nothing better than to be able to cause @ ten per cent fluctuation in gold every day. It is a mistake to suppose that the inter- ests of the country are any more promoted by s speculative fall in the premium than by a speculative Tise, for both are temporary and equally damaging tw the business community, who require stability in the standard of values, without which trade becomes Ro less hazardous than speculation. Itia no sign that the public credit has improved because the pre- mium is nearly twelve per cent lower than it was three months ago, and it affords no evidence that it ‘will not be as much higher in three months to come, supposing that any disturbing element 1s at work, either at home or abroad, in the meantime. The customs receipts at the port during the week slightly exceeded $2,760,000, or but little more than the aver- age Joss of specie by the city banks. There was an actual borrowing demand for coin from the bears and rates favored the lender. The daily iange of ‘the market was as understated:— Money was tn good supply during the week at alx and seven per cent at the Stock Exchange, with most of the transactions at the lower rate, In commercial paper there was a moderate business ‘transacted, and the best grade at three and four months was generally taken at seven per cent dfscount, this being the minimum rate. ‘The demand for loans on miscellaneous stocks on Saturday afternoon was quicker than usual since the recent stringency, and the rate was seven per ent almost without exception. A rumor at the @ame time gained currency that another “squeeze”? 4m the money market would be artificially produced ‘this week for the purpose which the bears failed to @ccomplish when they last experimented in this @irection. But if the attempt is made it is to be Roped it will fall of ite imtended result, there being mothing legitimate but much that is discreditable in thie kind of warfare. The statement of the mesociated banks of this city for the week shows some important and unexpected changes ef an unfavorable character. The deposits have @ecreased $5,865,180, although there was no @onmderable drain of currency westward ap- parent. The specie has decreased $2,411,238, so that ‘the loss in general deposits was only about three millions and a half. The loans have decreased $3,958,286, but the legal tenders only $285,361. The @irculation alone shows an increase—namely, $33,297, The totals of the present and last preced- ng statements are as subjoined:— 267, 11, 787,335 284,154,806 34,188,103 + 104,919,177 189,068,007 + 60,240,447 60,005,086 ‘The market for government securities opened mrong, and the reaction from the depression of the Previous week made further progress; but duiness @oon tntervened, although the principal dealers re- ported a good demand for investment from the coun- try and some purchases by the foreign bankers. The @aposition was general towards the close to defer ©perations until after the result of the Pennsylvania election has become known, and at the same time the continued decline in gold depressed quotations gightly; but considering the reducea premium they show great Ormness. The tendency of a republican vietory in Pennsylvania will be to strengthen gov- ernments materially, and there is a wide margin for improvement, our national securities being relatively cheaper than any others in the country. At the close ‘the market was strong at the subdjotned quotations>— Coupon, 1881, 113% & 113%; 5-20’s, coupon, 1662, 11234 & 112%; do., 1864, 11034 @ 110%; do., 1866, 11034 110); do., mew, 1865, 108% # 10894; do., 1867, 10856 @ 108%; do., 1868, 1005¢ @ 10044; 10-40's, coupon, 106 81055. The leading feature of the stock market was the rapid advance in Pacific Mali to 131, following which it was announced that the opposition line to Califor- nia had been withdrawn, whereupon the stock re- acted to 125; but at the close it was firm at about 128, the general expectation being that the company will resume the payment of dividends in December. Railway shares were strong, Erie excepted, and @uring the latter part of the week the Western sharea, and particularly Rock Island and Chicago and North- western, advanced rather sharply. On Saturday Ene developed great weakness consequent on sales to realize made in anticipation of a large amount of stock being thrown upon the market immediately aiter the annual meeting and election of the com- pany on Tuesday next, apd the price de- clined to O47 with every symptom of an impending break. The stock referred to is now held for election purposes by the present di- rectors, avd to this circumstance in part the recent steadiness of Erie, under depressing infuences, ts attributable. The earnings of this company, alike ‘With those of the New York Central, have falien off largely since the commeucement of the contest be- tween the latter and the Pennsylvania Central for traific to competing points in the West, and beth the Erie and the New York Central are carrying freight from New York to Chicago, by rail ali the way, at the rate of eight dollars per ton. New York Central Was somewhat neglected, especially towards the close, owing to the undersianding that the long taiked of scrip dividend has been indefinitely post- poued and will probably never be made, To “water” the stock in the manner proposed by some of the speculative holders of the stock, but never in- tended by Mr. Vanderbilt, would ve ultimately ruinous to it as a dividend paying security, and the eompany should never perpetrate so suicidal an act, Railway shares are now welling at pricea xo far sbove their real value that there ts no inducement whatever for the public to buy them, as thereny they would be merely relieving the cliques by whom they are sustained of a portion of the heavy load they are carrying. The hears have had #0 little to thrive upon for a long time past, owing to the steady Tine of prices, that the “short” interest outstanding fa very light, and hence when the market does give ‘Way there will be nothing to check its fail. Some of the miscellaneous shares were strong and more active than tiscali of late, there having been a rise of bunt six per cent in Mariposa preferred and more than two in Western Union Telegraph. At the close on Saturday the market was drooping for rail- ‘Way shares but atemly for other stocks, and the following quotations were current:—-Pacifo Mati, 1984 & 198%; Western Union, 06% & 36%; New York Central, 128% a 129%; Erie, 47% ; Reading, 06% © 06%; Michigan Southern, 86 a 964; Pittsburg, 08 a 88%; Rock Island, 1064 # 10644; Northwestern, 91 2 91%; Go, preferred, 914 @ 9194; Fort Wayne, 311% # 111%; St. Paul, 100% @ 101; do. preferred, 2005 a 101; Mariposa preferred, 20% & 21, NEW YORK “ERALD, MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1868.—TRIPLE SHEET. ye ‘The foreign exchange tnarket was firm througbout and rates advanced, owing to the scarcity of billa and tre tncredhed demand of importers, both being dm consequence of the decline in gold, which checked exports of produce, while it stimulated purchases of exchange for remittance. At the close the lead- ing drawers asked 1003, for their sterling at alxty days, and Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days ‘were quoted st 109% a 10934; at three days, 109% a 109%; commercial bills, 10834 @ 100; Bankers’ bilis on Paria at sixty days, 6.10% a 6.1734.
