FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘The bearish element in tho gold market yous active, but the fuciaations during the PYi3% to were limited to 1% per cent, namely, trot ta.* te 144, with the closing transactions on, pr 144 914454, Large “shcrt” sales were Spit, OO Ent Probable result of tho Maine eocav= O3¢ nee bas been over discounted, and panel interest ontstanding is so al. larg causes loans to be the borrowing demand for 1s sig interest to elther borro eMfhe increased activity of wer or Mer, axe nd oF a au this port from Monday to Sat- ba hoi ‘aaving been $3,172,964, while the shipments of -Pecle were $329,526 and the Sub-Trea- aury dispu-sed $495,513 in coin in payment of inte- Fest opie public debt, The general trade of the city is moderately good for the season, although prices of late have shown & yielding rather than an advancing tendency, ‘There are no speculative features in any of the mar- kets and the conservative feeling which prevails causes purchases to be limited mainly to immediate wants. Inthe department of dry goods more de- cided improvement has been experienced than in @ny other and @ full average business was trans- acted duringthe week. The decline in cotton tended to unsettle prices to some extent, especially for do- mestic cotton fabrics, while foreign goods were comparatively steady and for seasonable fabrics firm, although the sales were in smaller lots than in the dayswhen longer credits were given. The auc- tion sab3 were numerous and well attended, and for tht most part satisfactory prices were realized for British and continental fabrics, The trade ef the country generally is conducted on a very conse vative basis and there is a prudent disin- clinaton shown on ail sides to either give or take long credits or to buy in excess of legitimate wants, The daily range of guid during the week was as un- deratated :— Scwpay, Sept. 1%, The.e was an active market for government secu- risles at advanclug prices during the greater part of the week, anu it close) strong at the highest figures touched, the indications being favorable to con- tinned buoyancy unier the revival of public conf- dence in the national credit; for it 18 noticeable that savings banks, private investors and others who held back from purchasing in July in consequence of the disturbance occasioned by the Dethocratic Conven tion and the project for taxing the interest on bonds are now coming forward as buyers, on the theory that these securities are cheap and that it is more profitable to invest in them than to loan their money on call. Moreover, they are considerably lower now, allowing for the accrued interest, than they were just antece- dent to the period referred to, and the supply of bonds having stop}ed, except to a trifling extent in Substitution for seven-thirty notes, while the demand continues unabated and promises to increase from year to year, they cannot fati to gradually advance in price with the growing demand, The foreign mar- kets are steadily absorbing bonds, and the five-twen- ties of 1862 held abroad are being exchanged for the later issues for the sake of the difference in price be- tween them, the result of which will be acloserap- proximat:on in price of the old and the new bonds. At present the cheapest bouds on the list are the five- twenties of 1864, which stand qnoted at 14 per cent below the issue of 1805, although the amount of ac- crued tuterest on both is equal, The bonds of 1867 have, however, been of la‘e the most largely dealt in, and the “short’’ interest in these is particularly heavy, although it is very considerable in all the is-‘ues, Hence there is an active borrowing demand for bonds and the ‘‘short’* interest can be practi- cally covered whenever the leading bulls see ft. But this is merely looking at the market from ® local and speculative point of view. Its Breat support comes from investors at large both at home and abroad, to whom the high rate of interest is a constant attraction. The grow- ing confldeuce in our national securities is not lik :ly to be disturbed by any legislation of Congress with regard tothe redemption of the bonds, althongh the question of gold versus greenbacks will probably be ag.taved from Lime to time during the Presidential campaign for political eifect. As the public mind bas become accustomed to this, however, it wiil fail to exert any mischievous effect, The closing quotations yesterday were as subjoined:— Coupon, 1841, 114% @ 11434; 6-20's, coupon, 1862, 113% a 113%; do., 1864, 100% @ 110; do., 1965, 11144 11134; do., 1866, January and July, 109 a 1003; do., 1867, 1037¢ @ 100; do., 1868, 109 a 10044; tiered coupon, 104% @ 105, The statement of the associated banks of this city for the week ending yesterday proved more favorable than was geuerally expected, owing to the -timited extent of the drain of currency westward. Ail the items of the account show a decrease except the loans, which have Increased $224,994, the loss in deposits being $2,365,271; in legal tender notes, $2,504,435; in specie, $664,836, and in the circulation, $20,498. ‘The totals of the present and last preceding glutements are as subjoined:— Sept. Sept. 12, $271, 830,606 $272,065,600 16,180,042 aotsit at ansraamoTO 36,083,773 63,429,328 By the foregoing it will de seen that the liabilities tn deposits and circulation amount to $239,628,996, ‘anid the reserve in legal tenders and specie to $79,580, or $19,675,021 in excess of the legal re- quirement of twenty-five per cent, which would be $59,007,249, Money was in abundant supply all the week and the geaeral rate for loans on miscellanous collaterals at the banks and elsewhere was four per cent, but first class houses, including the principal dealers in government securities, were enabled to borrow all they required at three per cent, and on Saturday baiances were offered at two and in some instances at one per cent. The large foreign bal- ances now held for employment at this centre cause those holding them to be free lenders of money on approved collaterals, and hence Wall street borrowers are supplied toa great extent without resorting to the bauks. These balances have been heavy for Many months past, but it is only now that they at- tract special attention in consequence of an appre- hended adverse turn in the money market; bat it is safe to aay that there will, according to all the pres- ent indications, be no stringency produced by legitt- mate causes dariag the remainder of the year, The reasous in support of this conclusion we have explained on previous occasions, and nothing has occurred since to occasion any modification of our views; but, as we then said, it is reasonable to look for a moderately active six and seven per cent market for money for a time when the full eifect of the drain of currency to move the crops i felt. At these rates the supply will be ample, how- ever, and the efforts of stock speculators operating for a fall to create temporarily an artificial strin- geney are likely, if made, to be attended with fail- are, Tis easy Condition of affairs has not generally (inspired contidence in higher prices for the specula- tive railway and miscellaneous shares, their tendency baving been downward during the week under active bear operations. ‘The foreign exchange market was dull and barely steady, and towards thé close rates had a drooping tendeney, The accumulation of foreign balances on this side 1s not without fufluence in this direction, as the demand for bills is diminisued in proportion as remittances are deterred. Yesterday afternoon the leading drawers asked 100% for their sterling at wixty days, and bankers’ billson England at sixty days were quoted at 109 @ 100%; at three days, 109% & 109%; commercial bills, 1085 @ 108%.
